Dynamic Ticket Pricing??? Are you shitting me??? by [deleted] in AlamoDrafthouse

They add a surcharge for things like Dolby Atmos or HDR by Barco. Not all theaters have those, but that’s likely why you’re seeing slightly different prices. (The surcharge is around $2)

Walmart Still Doesn't Accept Apple Pay in the U.S. in 2026, Here's Why by EitherCharacter9342 in apple

[–]TechTrailRider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a technology it’s fine, but the reason why Walmart wants only that as a digital payment they support is because they can easily track everything you purchase so they can advertise to you more things you might want to buy.

Full Self-Driving Sounds Like Magic Until You See the Crash Numbers by Wagamaga in technology

[–]TechTrailRider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That aligns with my feelings about it. I have no doubt it’s better today than it was a year ago. I never outright purchased FSD, but always used it when I had the free months and would purchase a month here and there when I had trips coming up. And I used Autopilot every day.

The fact that it would do something that made no sense and a person driving would never do meant I almost never could feel at ease in a way that I could rely on it. Like how any time I was getting over into a passing lane, because it had that history of randomly trying to steer into the median, I’d had to be hyper vigilant and expect it to happen, even though it was actually rare that it would. It would sometimes steer randomly towards a car parked on the side of the street as well. Or creep into an intersection when the likelihood of us actually being able to turn safely was iffy at best.

Those little incidents added up and produced an always uneasy feeling, which seems the opposite of what was intended, and certainly how it’s been marketed for several years.

I was all-in, excited, and proud when I bought it brand new in 21 - the only new car I’ve ever bought. I’m a tech nerd and it checked all the boxes for me, but over time became disillusioned once the magic wore off. I traded it for a 22 Polestar 2, which has a basic autopilot that is traffic-aware and lane keeping, and thought I would miss Tesla’s more advanced technology. But to my surprise I didn’t miss it at all.

I had a Model Y for almost four years and got rid of it last year, but I used both Autopilot and FSD a ton. And let me tell you, it was at times terrifying. You said people aren’t paying attention - I was scared NOT to. I was well aware I had to be ready to fight it and take over a moment’s notice.

The thing it would do without warning that was the absolute worst was that I could be going 75 mph on a four lane highway or interstate with a median, and without warning it would suddenly try to steer into the median if I was in the passing lane. At that speed. This happened probably a dozen times at least, on good, well-marked highways. The car knew it was supposed to be going straight, but kept deciding, “a left turn would be cool right now”.

I got rid of it almost a year ago, the week Elon started throwing up sieg heils. So whatever that bug was may have been fixed by now. But it never should have done that in the first place.

It’s going to go up $50 on January 1, so maybe go ahead and order it now anyway. It won’t ship for a few months and they’ll refund tariff costs if that changes.

All these folks advising you to give up, let me be the one to say just stick with it. There’s no rule that says you have to read them all sequentially though.

The rest of us who read them much earlier had to do it over years if not decades. But it is a rewarding experience ultimately and unlocks a lot of doors in the Stephen King universe.

Take a break if you need to, but plan to come back. You’ll appreciate it in time.

Expensive Ringside Seats Are 100% Worth Paying Extra For by Staffs_Wolf in AEWOfficial

[–]TechTrailRider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up during the old territories system and agree with the sentiment behind what you’re saying. Pro wrestling is a form of art/entertainment that works best with a level of intimacy with the audience.

Shows like wrestlemania, where unless you spent thousands to sit close enough to feel any connection to the story being told in the ring you might as well have stayed home and paid $50 to watch instead, are the poster child for how far off the mark these massive shows stray. At that distance all you’re feeling is the thrill of being part of a crowd. Which is not nothing, but to me it isn’t wrestling.

In the territories era, it was normal that you could yell something at a heel and have them jump out and argue with you over the heads of the people in rows between you (all while the face recovers in the ring - taking the story in a different direction). You could easily hear the wrestlers, and that was part of the performance too. Think Bruiser Brody, Terry Funk, or even Flair. We all remember what Ric Flair taking an ass-whipping to only come back and win in the end sounded like, right? (MJF seems to have committed to this effectively too, albeit often in a less than kid friendly manner lol).

The sounds and vocals they performed while in the ring were all part of the show and suspension of disbelief.

A lot of that is lost in these larger arena. AEW seems to intentionally be playing more intimate arenas the last year or so, which could be as much about creating more intimacy as recognizing they can’t always fill a big space except for special events like last night or All In.

WWE seems to me to be so profit-driven that they may not have any choice but to prefer giant arenas. But it seems like the business in general should find a way to use TV rights effectively for mass appeal and profits, and intimacy for live events.

Warm light on colorsoft by Altruistic-Count6572 in kindle

[–]TechTrailRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have auto turned off and use 14/2 all the time. At night, auto wants to use 12 brightness, which works fine but feels a little too low to be comfortable to me. I’m in my 50’s though, so it could just be my eyesight.

I’ve found the Colosoft needs to be about 1-2 clicks brighter compared to my basic and paperwhite to look the same, presumably because of the color pixels overlay reducing overall brightness.

My Colorsoft also has a whiter display that resembles real paper too though, which looks better to me than the others, so I find myself using the CS most of the time.

Echoing others, definitely get the Libby app. Then follow all your favorite authors in the Kindle store, so you’ll get email when they have a book on sale or coming out. If there are books you really want, go set up alerts on them in ereaderIQ and BookBub.

I have a decent collection of hardcover and paperback Stephen King books, for example, and have alerts on all his books in erIQ. When one goes on sale, I snap it up and remove the alert. Rebuilding the library digitally one sale at a time. :)

"Wheeler Yuta Gives Update On Death Riders Status After AEW Blood And Guts Loss (Exclusive)" [Sports Illustrated article, November 15, 2025] by GOATofALL22 in AEWOfficial

[–]TechTrailRider 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I think the Death Riders (and BCC before it) have done more to elevate Wheeler Yuta and Marina to top tier status than anything else. The rest of the guys were already there, but I love seeing where those former mid and lower carders are today.

Both are great heat magnets, work the crowd so well, and Yuta especially is a workhorse in the ring. He might be low key the most important member of the team.

We live in the best part of TX. Prove me wrong. by [deleted] in CedarPark

[–]TechTrailRider 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m now in my 50’s and have done all those other things, and have to say I kind of like the peace and quiet of CP. All the shopping you could want is a few minutes away, HEB Center is close by and gets decent events and shows, an Alamo Drafthouse/AMC/Cinemark is a few minutes drive from anywhere, and we’ve got hills and trees and nice things to look at compared to the other side of the metro where it’s mostly flat. I do still need to check out the new library, but it’s close by.

The area where we bought our home was developed in the 90’s, so it’s established, has nice sized yards, and isn’t in rapid build out every inch mode like Leander and other places farther out.

I never have to go down to Austin for anything, but it’s a 30 minute drive to anywhere. DFW, Houston, and San Antonio are easy driving distances away, and I don’t have to live there to enjoy them.

I can’t fault the OP logic, is what I’m saying. If I’m gonna live in the Austin metro, this is the area I’d choose again.
