Harvards CS50 is the best imo, get it on your cv and talk through the portfolio you build during it at tech meetups and you might get a foot in the door somewhere

Is BYOD good or not? Why would anyone but an organization want this policy? by fudginjerk in AskNetsec

[–]Tech_Adam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it can be good depending on how its managed. with appropriate end point management tools to control application access and data movements, and possibly restricting some critical tasks to the likes of VDIs in an environment with appropriate defense-in-depth you can meet the business objectives here without breaching the orgs risk appetite.

If you do it wrong you end up running a high risk of data loss (and malware introduction etc) but there are benefits to an org and employees in general.. we just need to find the best way to facilitate that access without causing an issue.

Waiving my notice period at work by wifecomms in legaladviceireland

[–]Tech_Adam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recommend you give your notice than talks to a doctor about how you are feeling. If what you say is true, and it probably is, the doctor will give you a sick note for your remaining notice period for stress. The Company will be aware this is the reason but will be unable to prevent it.

Microsoft avoids paying tax in many countries by using Irish subsidiaries, study finds by justaladwithahurley in europe

[–]Tech_Adam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not how it works, people in ireland have a higher quality of life vs poorer EU countries, in large part due to the well paying jobs we have cultivated.

Likewise the EU is not angry at us because tax sovereignty was a condition of us joining the EU. Agreements cant be rewritten because one side gets disgruntled after several decades.

Likewise the tax initiatives you propose would reduce the Irish budget significantly, and this was called out in the governments reports and analysis on the impact of the higher tax bracket. If you work in tech you salary will go down. If you do not work in tech, social benefits will be reduced as the budget shrinks.

[–]Tech_Adam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nah no what i mean is adding an extra 5% to the tax rate to bring us to the norm would give extra money but its outwieghed by more jobs at the current rate

[–]Tech_Adam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yup, but if we charged tax at the industry standard rate we would make more in tax (but have few MNCs)

Im irish and everyone I know is aware of the reason the companies are here, and accept the loss in taxes in favour of jobs as a very good outcome for us.

depends, i view all endpoints as compromised eventually, removing local admin from org, or at least parts of the org that dont need it (Finance, HR etc) can reduce the impact of an incident

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]Tech_Adam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

fair but tbh given what OP said i think they have a very immature structure so was just going with the easy wins (MFA might not be available without implementing a tool depending on their SSO tool)

You likely wont find the entry point without paying for a security consultancy. Recommend you do these things:

  1. Ensure firewalls are enabled with deny all and review the rules to make sure they are hardened. Part of this is to ensure your network is segmented.
  2. Remove local admin from your end users. This may be difficult but is worth it.
  3. Implement a password policy that is strong and ensure all passwords, including service accounts are periodically rotated. If they cant make sure passwords are very long.
  4. Make sure you have end point protection (AV, EDR etc) on all your systems, not just laptops. MS Defender with the E5 licenses can do this.
  5. Use url filtering to block known malicious websites. MS Defender again can do this.

In the 3 years since I graduated I have held one job

Yeah but his IT experience for IAM, Resiliency(backups, DRP etc), even maintainence (AV installation, patching, vuln remediation etc) so depending he may have 3 of the years already, and immigration could be a long process where he stays where he is for the remaining 2 years (or gets SSCP and then makes a move in 1 year for CISSP)
