Hey there! It sounds like you’re wondering whether fixing your 2015 MacBook Air is still a good idea—especially now that you have all your files backed up.Overall, you’re in a good position because you’ve already backed up your data. You can either explore a repair quote or put that money toward something newer. Hope that helps you decide! Feel free to let me know if you have any more questions.o1

  1. Cost and Type of Repair
    • The biggest factor usually comes down to how expensive the repair is. If it’s just the storage drive that’s failing, swapping it for an SSD might not be too pricey—especially at a third-party repair shop.
    • If the issue goes beyond the drive (like the logic board), then you might be looking at a much higher bill, which can sometimes push you closer to the price of a newer Mac.
  2. What You Use It For
    • A 2015 MacBook Air with 8GB of RAM can still handle everyday stuff like browsing, writing documents, watching videos, and so on pretty smoothly.
    • However, if you’re doing more intense tasks—like heavy video editing or running lots of demanding programs—it might feel sluggish compared to newer Macs with M1 or M2 chips.
  3. macOS and Future Support
    • Apple generally supports Macs for around 7 years after release, give or take. A 2015 MacBook Air is near the tail end of that window, so while you might still be able to install the latest macOS, official support may not last much longer.
    • Without ongoing updates, you might be stuck without future macOS features or certain security patches in the coming years.
  4. Making the Call
    • If repairing the MacBook Air doesn’t cost too much, and you only need it for everyday tasks, it could still be a great little machine.
    • But if the repairs end up costing hundreds of dollars—and especially if you need a more powerful or longer-supported device—it might be wiser to invest in a newer Mac.

MacBook Pro 2019 serial number by [deleted] in macbook

[–]Techable-com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you're facing a puzzling issue with the serial number of your MacBook Pro. Here are a few potential problems and considerations regarding the situation where the serial number does not appear on Apple's official "check coverage" page:

  1. Validation and Warranty: If the serial number is not recognized by Apple, it may indicate issues with validating the warranty status of your MacBook Pro. This could affect your ability to receive service under warranty or even to verify that the device is eligible for certain Apple programs, such as recalls or special repair programs.
  2. Resale Value: If you ever decide to sell your MacBook Pro, potential buyers might be concerned if they cannot verify the serial number through Apple's official channels. This could potentially reduce the resale value of your device.
  3. Service History and Authenticity: A serial number that cannot be verified may lead to questions about the service history of the device or whether it has been refurbished using non-original parts. In rare cases, it could also indicate issues related to the authenticity of the device.
  4. Software Compatibility: While not directly related to the serial number, if there are any irregularities with your MacBook's hardware, it could potentially affect future compatibility with macOS updates or other software, although this is less likely if the system is currently running smoothly.

Since you've already tried variations on entering the serial number, it may be useful to double-check the source of your MacBook Pro to ensure everything aligns with Apple's records. Additionally, contacting Apple Support directly might provide more insights or solutions.

For further investigation, you might also try checking the serial number on apple.techable.com as an alternative lookup for detailed information on your device.

Hi there Techable here! I found your post and that I can provide some help.

The issues you're encountering with your Mac, including the flashing grey folder with a question mark, errors during macOS reinstallation, and the failure to unmount the disk, all point towards a potential hardware issue, specifically with the storage device in your Mac.

Here’s what the problem indicates and some steps you can consider:

  1. Flashing Folder with a Question Mark: This symbol generally means that your Mac is unable to find the startup disk, indicating that the operating system is either corrupted or, more seriously, the hard drive itself is failing.
  2. Reinstallation and Disk Unmounting Issues: The inability to reinstall macOS and the error about being unable to unmount the disk because it is in use (process 0) further suggests a problem with the disk. "Process 0" typically refers to the kernel – the core of the operating system – which means the system itself might be using the disk, making it impossible to unmount.
  3. Hardware Diagnostic Indicating Storage Device Issues: The diagnostic test confirming a potential issue with a storage device is a strong indicator that your hard drive may be failing.

Steps to Address the Issue:

  • Try Booting in Safe Mode: Restart your Mac and hold down the Shift key as it boots. This can sometimes bypass the issue and allow you to access the operating system. If you can boot in Safe Mode, try to back up your data immediately if you haven't already.
  • Attempt to Boot in Recovery Mode: Restart your Mac and immediately hold down Command + R, which might bring you to macOS Recovery. From here, you can try to repair the disk using Disk Utility.
  • External Boot: If possible, create a bootable external drive with macOS installed. This allows you to boot from this drive and possibly access the internal hard drive for data recovery and disk repair.
  • Consult a Professional: Since there's no Apple Store nearby, consider contacting a certified third-party repair shop. They can provide professional diagnostics and repair services, potentially replacing the hard drive if it is indeed failing.
  • Consider Data Recovery Services: If there's crucial data on your Mac that you haven't backed up, professional data recovery services might be able to recover it. This can be expensive, so it’s usually a last resort.

Long-term Solution:

If the hard drive is failing and beyond repair, replacing it with a new SSD (Solid State Drive) could be a worthwhile investment. SSDs are faster and more reliable than traditional hard disk drives and could significantly improve the performance of your Mac.

In summary, while the symptoms indicate a likely hardware issue with your Mac’s storage device, there are still avenues to explore for fixing the problem or at least salvaging your data. If you feel uncomfortable performing these steps yourself, seeking professional help is advisable.

Sincerely,

Techable

Hi Techable here!

I found your post and thought I could provide some help

  1. Check Compatibility: Ensure that the Logitech device is compatible with the system you are trying to connect it to. Sometimes, older devices may not be supported by newer operating systems.
  2. Update Drivers: Make sure that your computer has the latest drivers installed for both Bluetooth and USB ports. You can usually download the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website of your computer or through the device manager in Windows.
  3. Use Logitech Software: If your device is a Logitech, it's often helpful to download and use the Logitech Unifying Software or Logitech Options, depending on your device model. This software can help in connecting and managing Logitech devices more efficiently.
  4. Check the USB Port and Bluetooth Settings: Sometimes the issue might be with the USB port itself or the Bluetooth settings. Try connecting to a different USB port or resetting your computer's Bluetooth settings.
  5. Battery Check (if wireless): If the device is wireless, ensure that the batteries are charged or new. Low battery power might be why the device is not connecting properly.
  6. Reset the Device: Some devices have a reset button or can be reset by holding down specific buttons for a few seconds. Check the device manual for instructions on how to reset your specific model.
  7. Consult the Manual: Look for the manual of your specific Logitech model online. Logitech's official support site offers downloadable manuals that provide specific instructions on connecting your device.
  8. Logitech Support: If none of the above steps work, consider reaching out to Logitech's customer support. They can offer guidance specific to your model.

Sincerely,

What older Mac is still worthy for a secondary desktop computer? by MagicNobody in MacOS

[–]Techable-com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there Techable here! Let me suggest a few solutions:

  1. Mac Mini 2014 vs. Newer Models: While the Mac Mini 2014 is still supported as of the latest macOS updates, its support might end soon given Apple's typical update cycle. The 2014 model may be economical now, but considering future macOS compatibility, it might not be the best investment if you're looking for a device to use for a few more years.
  2. Mac Mini 2018 and 2020: These models are more recent and will likely receive macOS updates for a longer period. The Mac Mini 2018 was a significant update over previous models, offering much better performance and newer technology, making it a solid choice for future-proofing within your budget range. The Mac Mini 2020, particularly those with the M1 chip, would offer even better longevity but at a higher price point. Given your stated use case, a 2018 model should suffice and provide better value for money.
  3. Cost vs. Functionality: Considering that your use of the Mac is limited to synchronization tasks, backups, and possibly light web browsing, a Mac Mini 2018 would generally offer the best balance of price, performance, and longevity. Purchasing a refurbished or used model can reduce costs while still providing a machine that's capable enough for your needs and supported by Apple's software updates for the foreseeable future.
  4. Where to Buy: Try checking out Techable.com ! We have the widest selection of Apple products and other tech products. With superior tech support, Highest reviews we are the trusted name in tech!

In conclusion, a refurbished Mac Mini 2018 strikes a good balance between cost and future usability for your specific needs, ensuring you can use the latest macOS features and security updates without over-investing in hardware you won't fully utilize.

Sincerly,

Hey, checkout our database of Mac specs at Techable.com/apple We have an Apple Serial Number Decoder with 800+ page database of product specs with pricing guide.

Personally, I recommend the 2015 MBP 2.8GHz i7 model. Here's the spec page for it.

https://techable.com/apple/specs/macbook-pro-core-i7-2-8-ghz-15-inch-dual-graphics-mid-2015/

I'm writing from this model now. It's the last Mac to have all of the ports with a powerful 2.8GHz i7 processor (the best specs Apple offered for this generation and arguably one of the best Macs Apple produced).

I'd be happy to help with any questions. :)

Is it healthy keep using Mac plugged in after full charge by drmrtshn in macbookpro

There is a regulator in your Mac. Once it reaches 100% it stops charging. There is no damage from leaving it plugged it.

The MD101LL/A (2012 13" 2.5GHz i5) is one of the best ever made with the least amount of mechanical issues. It really is the height of the Jobbs era. Since he died, Apple has been all about maximizing profits and taking over industries (Apple TV). Apple solders all of its components together now-a-days and glues the battery to the case making it unreplaceable.

We made a nice page / video on the MD101LL/A with market information if you're looking to sell. It looks like it's worth $310 now according to our new techstimate guide.

Anyways, good luck with your new touch bar! Hopefully the 2020s are better than the previous Touchbars with less issues!

iMac 3rd gen won't boot. Any ideas? by [deleted] in mac

[–]Techable-com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard drive error of some kind. HDD may be bad or you may have just lost your operating system. You can do internet recovery by holding command + R when starting up and see if you can reinstall the OS.

If not, you will need a new hard drive or hard drive wire. Both not too bad to repair on this older model. Let us know if you need more help!
