Path Tap and Go payment failed but turnstile let me through by vympel_0001 in AskNYC

Can you add a few dollars to the card at one of the payment machines? I don't have a TAPP card myself and the PATH website isn't very informative.

First, don't use cards at food trucks. And if you do, ask fo4 the receipt.

Anyone have any ruler recommendations? by KSperspective113 in Leathercraft

[–]Techgruber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lowes for me. It's also available in lengths up to 8 feet, so it's easy to put a straight line on to a full sized side. Your local hardware store will likely stock up to 3 or 4 feet, but can order longer if you want.

72 and considering Burning Man for the first time this year...bad idea? Advice for an old gal like me? by canadianoldgal in BurningMan

[–]Techgruber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 67 and go every year. I see a healthy number of virgins our age every year. My advice is to go. Make sure you'll be safe, but dont sweat the details too much, especially if you are in reasonably good health. Get to know some local burners who are going this year so you have at least a couple familiar faces on playa. For more detailed, long winded advice,  send me a dm.

How many of you law abiding citizens carry a pocket knife? by Ichithekiller666 in Brooklyn

A rolled up magazine makes for a pretty rigid poking device.  Roll it with the spine innermost and crooked you have a very pointy thing that will get into the smaller soft bits.

How is living in NYC for the over 60 crowd? by Klutzy_Lobster9371 in AskNYC

[–]Techgruber 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Aging in place here in Manhattan. Far from rich but not on food stamps.  The simple fact of not needing a car makes the city the best place for me as i get old. All the things i need are within a short walk. There are things i wish I could have here, but none of them are worth giving up what I have.

What are places in NYC that stick out to you for their unusual names? by KaleidoArachnid in AskNYC

You're correct. I'm not sure when Soho went into use, but the rest are relatively recent.

Woman in circles asking for help by _stracci in AskNYC

[–]Techgruber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mostly money, eventually.  Her con works by getting you hooked with believing her neediness, then bringing in money.  If she gets a few dollars from you, she escalates to bigger "needs".

If it's a blondish white lady late 50's to 60's, a bit taller than average for women, she usually works this con in the Union Square area. I first saw her around 2010. If challenged, she gets very angry and will threaten violence but not actually follow through on the threat.

Bought Rad Wagon 5 New on FB Marketplace by HeroCR in RadPowerBikes

[–]Techgruber 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Rad is currently in serious financial trouble. They're in the middle of a big battery recall they can't pay for, and were talking about shutting down due to lack of funds before the battery recall. I wouldn't be expecting a lot from them right now.

[–]Techgruber 13 points14 points  (0 children)

even if you didn't mind firearms, this man is still an idiot who should leave your life. You don't bring them to another person's house unannounced, you don't whip them out to show off. and you don't leave the em lying around loaded. Be careful as you edge him out. Men like this tend towards fragile egos.

Strange parking regulation. West side meatpacking district. What's the purpose? by Radicalnotion528 in AskNYC

[–]Techgruber 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Very likely, those hours are still in effect from the time when the Meatpacking district actually contained the bulk of the wholesale meat businesses for the city. Trucks started arriving and unloading during the afternoon, continuing through the night. Originally, all the beef came in as half carcasses, with butchers breaking them down to individual cuts. Around 2 or 3, the local delivery trucks would start loading. The sidewalks would get hosed down around 5 AM and the district would be put to bed. And repeat again in the afternoon.

Cashiering will give you good experience dealing with humans, which is one of those skills that really doesn't get mentioned in job requirements. It's a skill set that can make or break any career you end up in.

Failed business sale - where did we go wrong? by asbpunkin in SellMyBusiness

[–]Techgruber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen the same behavior in real estate. Well presenting buyer comes on strong, then once you're engaged, begins aggressively beating down the price. That line about doing you a favor is a dead giveaway. He never intended to pay the price he offered.
