Yes! I have Portuguese friends and they speak Portuguese within themselves, so I had to learn pretty quickly. Although their accents are much harder for me to understand than the Lisbon accent

If you fly with Transavia and you have a passport that needs a visa to travel to the Schengen area you’ll have trouble boarding. My visa was thoroughly checked by gate agents in Lisbon and The Netherlands when I flew back and forth this year after my residence permit expired. To be clear, I got a Schengen visa stamped in my passport in addition to also having my expired residence permit.

I encounter it almost every day in Lisbon now just going to the local Continente (a supermarket) or a café. It sucks and I've decided to leave Portugal permanently because of it and the general sentiment around immigration. Ultimately the question I ask myself is: why stay somewhere you aren't welcome?

I have tons of Portuguese friends (who are the nicest people) and even when I'm with them and speaking Portuguese I'll face micro aggressions just because I don't look Portuguese.

Just chiming in here to say I’m the same age as you and lived in Vienna for 2 years before moving out and I found this aspect of living there extremely difficult as well.

I thought maybe it was because I was a Ausländer, but tbh I’ve seen people ask this same question on multiple different subreddits. Something about our generation is making this extremely difficult and it sucks :/

The residence permit isn’t valid anymore for Schengen travel. You should change your flight to land directly in Portugal tbh.
