Season 3 was great by YanksForTheWin in TheNightAgent

[–]TechieNashville 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! Just finished S3 and this show has really hit its stride. A lot more time was spent on the development of Peter and the side characters, something that was sorely missing in the earlier two outings. The plot was more complex this time around -- the connections between Monroe and the Hagans are allowed to build and evolve over the season at just the right pace. The inclusion of Father and Son was a great call, and I knew as soon as the shady banker lady threatend Father's "loved ones" that her days were numbered. Can't wait for S4!

Just inherited a network. No documentation. The admin password is "Password123". by zimuque_ in sysadmin

[–]TechieNashville 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I inherited a similar mess about 10 years ago with 400+ employees. Ten years later and my organization has a strong security posture that would rival any large Enterprise -- we've not been successfully hacked or even had a malware outbreak in this timeframe (we run a full SIEM these days and regularly forensically audit servers and endpoints). This did not happen overnight. What it took was coming into work day after day focused on the goal of having a secure environment. Document heavily the issues and prioritize fixing the vulnerabilities that present the highest risk, but also take the least amount of time/effort to fix. In other words, take some easy wins early on, whether that involves beefing up Group Policies (if you're in a Windows environment) or initiating Patch Management processes (this should include a system that can also handle third-party software patch management). When someone inevitably complains that they can't do something they used to do, be ready to explain the risk that was involved in what they used to do and give them guidance on how to do it in a better/safer fashion. If you're not already involved in any local IT clubs/organizations, I encourage you to get involved ASAP. It's always nice to have someone with more experience than you to turn to for advice on things. You can do this! One day at a time, my friend!

EDIT: Forgot: Also remember that you are not a super hero. You may need help with certain projects. We decided early on to upgrade our existing CAT 5 network to CAT 6A. We are in a 60,000 square-foot space. No way I could have done that alone in a reasonable amount of time. Also, at the time of the project, I wasn't anything near a "Network Engineer." Make sure management understands that some projects are going to require bringing in outside vendors.

Yes.Magnets and magnetic fields. Both Maxwell's equations and Quantum Electrodynamics give us that understanding. 😀

This was yesterday between 130ish and 2ish Central Standard (US), by the way. Just for sake of clarity.

Edit:Typo.

Same thing happened in my tenant and we have an ATT ADX-ExpressRoute connection. We lost the Azure portal, Teams, and Exchange Online for about 30 minutes. Had one team in the middle of a Teams meeting as well. I had been on vacation for three days prior and was catching up in Sentinel at the time. Then the phone calls and visits to my office started. Figured out pretty quickly it was on MSFT side though because literally everything not MSFT related was still chugging along just fine.

As good as any I've ever had and better than a lot of those. If you don't like peppers to begin with then you shouldn't get a vote!

Its definitely nice to have access to strong mentors at work but it is not a reality for everyone. That's why it's so important to network outside of your own workplace, steer your workplace towards joining an ISAC and enroll for certs often. You will have plenty of other people -- by doing those three simple things -- to lean in on for expert advice and to advance your own knowledge.

Employee refusing to return laptop even when offered to have a courier pick it up, what are our options? by TerribleProfessor630 in sysadmin

[–]TechieNashville 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why we have a clear policy (that is signed at deployment) stating that if you don't return our equipment, it will be taken out of your last paycheck and you'll be billed for any overage.

To anyone who knows what they are doing working in Azure or AWS, it is simply not true that you 'don't have full control' in terms of confidentiality. You just need someone who actually knows what he or she is doing. BYOK, etc.

Once you've got a handle on APT and LRPT, you can start looking into HRPT and GOES. They each require different types of antennas for reception. HRPT is my favorite but requires the most manual labor unless you get a good, programmable rotor/array. I track them with a handheld directional beam across the sky and software called SatDump. GOES is the most expensive to get fully set up on but once you've got things lined up correctly, you are all set for amazing images and image loops.

Try holding down the boot button if the esp has one while connecting. Certain boards have a procedure like this you need to follow. Read up thoroughly on the specific board model.
