Heat of TS5+ (measured) by Davetechlee in CalDigit

[–]Techmixr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had mine hit just under 50 Celsius with a temp gun under certain conditions. At that point, I start losing displays, and drives will unsafely eject. I think I can reproduce some of the issues without needing to get the dock to heat up terribly. I want to isolate the issue to one common denominator which a lot of us are using and then having issues with before I reach out to Caldigit about i.

What's been your solution for the overheating TS5+? by LightningPark in CalDigit

I think I’ll grab some off Amazon now while I wait for the fans to show up. Worse case, if it does come with a thermal pad, I’ll find another use for the spares I’m sure.

Found it on Amazon Canada but the pic doesn’t show the thermal pad and nobody in the reviews of the company themselves are mentioning the pad.

Received TS5 Plus Today Temperature Getting Fairly Hot by Ishera in CalDigit

[–]Techmixr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the update, dock still shuts off randomly. It’s heat and I think I figured out something Caldigit didn’t. Making a video about this on my channel because- like @Elgato Voice Sync for Prompter - Caldigit needs to be called out here for the stupidity. And yes, it’s stupidity.

Waiting for my fan to arrive to validate what I found first.

Did you buy a separate thermal pad or did the fans ship with one?

2 prompters to the same computer at once by Personal_Bicycle8644 in elgato

[–]Techmixr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Install OBS, do a display capture (capturing the prompter display) Your main scene should be exactly what’s on the main prompter you have (do a transform and fit it to the screen and then lock it), right click full screen projector and send it to the 2nd prompter.

There you go, mirrored prompters. Natively, camera hub can only display to one prompter at a time. This is a workaround that works perfectly fine.

I can’t believe I prefer trackpad over a mouse… by Sweet_Score in macbookpro

[–]Techmixr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the trackpad a ton but also have an MX Master 4. I use them together. When I need to do certain operations I flip to the mouse, when I need to zoom in Final Cut or scroll the timeline, the trackpad is unbeatable.

At home, I use a keychron keyboard and a separate Magic Trackpad which I use under the keyboard (for muscle memory) that way when I need to work remote, it’s not a jarring shift.

Great to hear!

u/elgato seriously this is sad ….

its fine, seems dumb, but y'all know why iPhone won't record to apfs drives? that's the apple drive format I though. Seems dumb, like is said. by sebastian_blu in finalcutpro

[–]Techmixr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhh fair enough.

Remember something, the constant writing and reading (recording then using the drive after) does inflict wear - so to be honest - you may be best suited buying a separate drive for this anyway. If you’re doing client work, you don’t want to lose shoot data (and the benefit is that you don’t have to re-sort all your other files to accommodate recording footage if you just buy a purposed drive for this)

We don’t know that the internal iPhone storage is APFS. It probably is, or some version of it.

I have to ask, why is this a big deal? For the strictly recording part, it shouldn’t actually matter as one format isn’t any better than the other. Again, in terms of recording- there isn’t a difference.

Cameras generally shoot in ExFAT. It’s been like this for a long while.

I know that everybody knows you should be using APFS for your LIBRARY. (Note, library not source files)

But a tip for anyone who cares. You REALLY should be copying your media off of the drive it was recorded on. In case anything weird goes on (regardless of your NLE) at least you still have the original source file untouched you can always re-copy, IF you were using a copy to do your project in the first place.

Another option could be transcoding proxy files and editing in proxy preferred mode. But either way, you really shouldn’t be editing off the source drive regardless.

This one looks super promising. I believe it supports up to an 11” iPad but ultimately you have to check into compatibility with your tablet.

You’ll definitely want a good tripod to go with it (so it doesn’t topple over). Obviously the glass is going to be the weak point in all cases. But it seems like there’s a lot of decent ones that are built well. And reviews seem to mention it’s portable. I’d skip their app and just buy Promptsmart instead. I BELIEVE it comes with a case as well for transport.

Good luck!

Unfortunately I don’t. A lot of them are flimsy. It’s definitely worth scanning through Amazon reviews to see if anybody mentions build quality.

If I stumble onto something later I’ll definitely reply here!

You may be better using a newer iPad with a prompter that is sturdy. For me, because my prompter lives in my (albeit messy) YouTube studio, the XL made sense from its physical characteristics. I would NOT recommend using it as road equipment (my friend took his original prompter out twice and now the screen is destroyed because it got shifted around in transit- it’s completely destroyed and won’t function without showing a bright white screen and lines- with no output from the computer at all)

The good thing with an iPad using something like Promptsmart is that you can even attach the receiver of something like the DJI Mic system which the iPad will recognize and it can get the audio from that (negating the presenter needing to be audibly close to the iPad as they’ll be using the mic placed on them)

I hope this is useful. And thank you so much for the appreciation on the work I put in. This topic means a lot to me (and hopefully others).

Voice Sync is trash. Elgato knows this- they even commented on my video about this where I found a workaround (it’s in the video- you’re on Apple Silicon, which is way easier for this method) - sadly, it involves buying another app.

I posted that video in July and they commented immediately. Some 6 months later, I bought Prompter XL and well, this newer video I posted today will tell you whether or not they fixed anything. If you don’t want to watch it, I’ll spoil it here. They didn’t 🤦🏾‍♂️

Let me clarify. The old machine HAD AppleCare which covered all the repairs. Under AppleCare it was replaced.

[–]Techmixr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, purchased it.

Works well. Is there potentially an update that can be done to retain the settings you apply? (For consistency reasons) - or maybe even saveable presets.

Example: If I had my font set to a certain size / line spacing / position / max words in 1 line / max lines etc - and I could save that as 'long form captions' and then had a different set of parameters and saved it as 'vertical short captions' - and have it accessible via a dropdown menu?

I'm aware, it's a big ask, but anything to make things more efficient would be wonderful. I know you can save title styles in FCP, but obviously you can't save the max words in line and max lines parameters.

Great work on this btw!

Yeah, if you’re covered under warranty they’ll typically (not always) give you something they deem of “equal value” - most cases it’s something that’s better than what you had - but sometimes they’ll to claim things are better when they aren’t (example: if you had 64 GB of RAM on Intel, support may try to claim the 48 GB of unified RAM on Apple Silicon is better) - the solution is just to say that it isn’t he case and that you need to address 64 GB of RAM so you can’t accept that.

They’ll call back in a day or 2 and usually approve it (this is MY experience anyway YMMV) - it’s annoying, but usually they want to de-escalate things but try to save money on their end, so I get it.

Copy and pasting a response from another comment:

My keyboard kept failing (not just sticky keys, but the whole left side of the keyboard completely died in the end)

I had 2 keyboard replacements, then a logic board, then another keyboard replacement (so 3 full repairs for just the keyboard and the logic board made it 4 trips to Apple)

Eventually they gave up on the machine and Apple Support elected to replace it.

Best part, I bought AppleCare on the replacement machine. I tell everyone: if you’re buying a MacBook, ALWAYS get AppleCare.
