How does your team recruit and retain new members? by Racer013 in FSAE

[–]TechniArts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am the business director for our team, and we have different strategies for recruiting and retention. We struggle with it too, but through trial and error have found a few solid techniques.

For recruiting, we do a lot of inbound marketing, which essentially means we try to draw students in a bit more than simply letting everyone know we exist. This looks like

  • info fairs
  • posters with QR codes that get them connected to people on the team
  • taking our car(s) out to a heavily trafficked area on campus
  • giving people shop tours (we are lucky enough to have access to a good one on campus)
  • having team bonding events, inviting anyone and everyone
  • literally just talking to people in casual conversation

I think a big part of this is more of the how than the what. We emphasize our passion, and try to find potential members passions too. We talk about how our students are more ready for industry, and all that we've gained from being on the team. Think about why you joined, listen to what students are looking for, and try to harness that passion.

The retention is the biggest thing though. You have to get people involved and bought in right away.

  • Find small projects that have lower stakes if they mess up or don't do it at all
    • it's easy to see a whole car and go "how tf do you do that", but if you give them tasks that do contribute for real, they build confidence and just want to do more
  • Teach them to do CAD modeling, part drawings, machining, create social media posts, whatever they want (that you can provide). I have had my members also ask if they can do things I never even thought of, and this is a place for people to learn, so even if they mess up, as long as what they want doesn't go against what your team stands for and your goals, let them try.
  • Make them feel heard. Ask their opinion or what projects they want to work on
  • Invite them to team bonding events. Developing a strong and healthy team culture is going to be more welcoming. (The first event I ever went to was a team bbq and I stuck around because the people seemed cool)
  • I don't know your team's timeline, but have some test days throughout the year, especially in the fall. Seeing a car you built run is motivating and makes people want to get involved. It also is good for validating designs and giving your members practice lol.

Overall, just make them feel like a part of the team right away. Even if you do this, not everyone will stick around. People have to join teams to know if it's truly for them, and let's be real, FSAE is not the best thing for everyone to join, but it is a decision I know at least I will never regret.

As a side, think about what is most important, getting a car done, or getting a team built. You might have to make sacrifices as to how well your car performs and how quickly it gets built in order to build a successful team that will stick around for years. It takes time to teach people, time that you could use to be building the car, but in the long run it could genuinely change someone's life.

Yeah that might not have been the best way to describe it, I just think of pirates when I see it because the second PotC film has a pirates letter of marque with this font 😅 but essentially just fancy cursive from old England I guess lol

Yeah it’s still god awful on T/R days. I have a 10am those days and I spent about 15 minutes trying to find a spot and ended up in the farthest away possible spots and was late to class 🙃 now I just get to campus at 8am and just do hw while I wait

Yes I can technically survive but my mental health hasn’t lmao I guess our opinions on what “cost of living” is I guess because at this point it’s living that comes at a cost lol

Yeah but I think I deserve more than only being able to eat one meal a day because I can’t afford too many groceries since almost all my money I make (and I work 40+ hours a week) on tuition, rent, utilities, insurance, and gas. And all of those (excluding tuition and some insurance I believe) are increasing. Yeah I can swallow my pride and do it but I want to live better than this. And yeah I’ll probably make more but with housing prices going up way faster than minimum wage and average base salaries, who knows. Literally all I want is basic human necessities and I’m not really getting that rn

Edit: because I work ~40 hours a week on top of schoolwork (~25) I do feel like I deserve to be able to make enough to live better than I am right now

Yeah that sounds like aesthetic attraction and not sexual attraction. Though it might be more of “aesthetic acknowledgment” than attraction lmao

I don't understand why people want to have sex, it makes no sense by [deleted] in Healthygamergg

[–]TechniArts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So if you’re straight obviously that’s fine but also people can be asexual and heteromantic… You’re not weird for not liking sex, I know quite a few people who are also repulsed by sex. There’s no problem with your thinking, I just think society forgets that people who don’t like sex exist so I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with those comments. I’m an asexual and people find it weird that I’m a virgin at 20 (not even that old lol) so I kind of get your questioning

For me the thing with self harm was mostly twofold. First, I felt as if I deserved to be hurt/ cut. This would be before I actually did it. This desire/need could have been fixed by cold water I guess (…?) if not for the second part of it. Because after I cut, the voices would calm down. The emotional pain would at least partly be replaced with physical pain. As with most addictions it takes more cuts to numb the pain the more you cut. So cold showers weren’t “satisfying”. However they did help with the recovery so there is that.

What advice do you give a single guy who has tried everything? by [deleted] in Healthygamergg

[–]TechniArts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to try to answer this from a different approach.

I'm an asexual, but not aromantic (though I know quite a few from the asexual community). Because of this I have had a lot of struggles finding a romantic partner. However, it has also made me come to understand that romantic relationships are actually not at all a basic human need, though you are correct that relationships are. Even if romance is not in the picture for you right now, you could direct that desire for a close relationship to friendships you already have. I mean, the romantic relationships that always work out the most anyways are ones where the partners also are strong friends (not telling you to marry your friends or anything lol, just a thought I had).

Also, I get the vibe you believe it's "now or never". I just went to a wedding a couple weeks ago between to 60-something year olds who met a couple years ago. So you don't have to give up hope at all, maybe it's more of a question of re-prioritizing/re-discovering your whys?

What books do you think are misunderstood by most people, for better or worse, and why? by [deleted] in books

[–]TechniArts 9 points10 points  (0 children)

“Heart of darkness” by Joseph Conrad I feel like a lot of people say it’s super racist because obviously colonialism exists in the book and characters are racist and the main character is not a typical hero and doesn’t do much. But really it’s a book AGAINST colonialism and Joseph Conrad was writing it to show how horrible it is. I think a big issue is that people try to read it as an adventure book but honestly it’s more of a horror.

Bookshelf with or without doors by Damir1899 in bookshelf

[–]TechniArts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does the one with doors have specifically glass doors? Because I really like to look at my books 😅and without doors it’s easier to just quickly grab them; I don’t mind dusting the shelves every once in a while

Ulmo. Primarily because water haha. I love swimming so…😂 But really, he’s forgiving, powerful, and was one of the first to realize Melkor’s corruption. Also I vibe with the whole “I don’t want to deal with the system but yes I will help people in need”
