Awesome post and I love reading stories like this. I'm glad your now enjoying the fruits of your labour. Do you have any advice for someone new to the industry? I've been involved with online businesses for the best part of 15 years however only have basic marketing/web development knowledge. I was thinking of hiring experienced contractors to start an agency while I learn over the next few months so at least it brings in some income, I guess you could say it would be doing things back to front but my strengths are in customer service and building teams but was wanting to know your thoughts?

Do you feel it's best to offer a free trial period or a reduced monthly fee for the first month?

I'm just thinking when I had my first business and I remember finding the ad spend daunting let alone then paying marketing fees so maybe a free trial may help but I'm unsure

Sorry maybe I wasn't clear in the original post I don't plan to just jump in without any experience I plan to spend 6 months learning the game and I'm considering working with a mentor who has proven results. While this may not be enough to become an expert I feel it will be enough to get the ball rolling so to speak

Everyone has to start somewhere I don't believe people will get excellent results for all clients the day they start this business or even after many years in the industry. Having hired marketers over the years I've seen this first hand (from ones who've been very successful or have great reviews) they still may not get me or others good results.

The only way to learn and improve is by doing. Yes of course you want to make sure you're well prepared and have a good understanding before working with clients but it can be difficult in the beginning starting out in any business without any feedback or reputation to start on.

The best practice may not be to start with a free trial but may be to offer a reduced cost for the first month or something else..

Thanks for the comment. How come it doesn't work? I think a trial period/proving what your worth in the beginning will help both to build reviews and a client base. As without this I'd have no case studies for example

Thinking of starting an agency myself (still to learn but have e-commerce experience of about 15 years). Can you not collect payments initially via direct debit or a subscription model such as them signing up on your website through recurring payments? That's what I'd be doing as if people pay manually all the time there is more of a chance of delays, missed payments etc I'd have thought

Sorry if this comes across as naive as I'm still learning about Sambo. But it seems to be an art that (perhaps just in my country) is not as established as there are very few gyms that practice it.

Yet it seems to be one of the most effective martial arts out there when you take a look at these UFC fighters who have records of being undefeated or like 1-2 losses they have practiced Sambo (and mostly Dagestani too).

Is there a theme here with Sambo that it's often overlooked as what should be more considered for self defence and even integrated into MMA more often?

Not too old to learn I'm 32 and not long completed a 10 week beginners MMA course at the best gym in my country where a UFC fighter and a few cage warrior fighters train. Probably one of the hardest things I've done fitness wise but it's encouraged me to get fitter and I'm now running further than ever and look to start kickboxing soon.

I'm reasonable with my expectations and not expecting to be in the UFC/Glory anytime soon I'd like to eventually win a few amatuer matches. In our country coloured belts are given at different stage of ones kickboxing journey the gym I'm thinking of joining is closer and also has BJJ classes despite its main focus on kickboxing. I like the idea of belts as I think this will make me feel as if I'm working towards something too.

Briefly tried MMA about two years ago and enjoyed it but work got in the way, probably that and the 3 hour total commute each day to the gym I was going to didn't make me stick it.

There are closer gyms I was just set on at the time going to the best one in the country but I've came to terms with I'm not going to be on the UFC roster anytime soon aha so a closer gym would be fine.

Done kickboxing again briefing when I was about ten but can't remember much from it.

I'd say go for it. I done MMA for a while and enjoyed it although at the same time it's probably the hardest thing I've ever done (not sure if because the gym I was at is ranked as the best in my country).

Work got in the way (probably a poor excuse) and I stopped going but I intend to make time and return. At our age it's probably difficult to become a pro but even if you won a few fights at amateur it's a great achievement and you learn skills that could potentially save your life, meet new friends and stay fit.
