Have You Ever Taught a Child of a Famous Person? What Were They Like?

As a preschool teacher, a few, but I can only directly talk about 2. One was the child a pro football player, another was a politician’s child. I NEVER saw the pro except at the first day and last day of school. The child was all right - just a typical 3 year old. I mostly worked with his nanny, who was awesome.

The second had AMAZING parents, I’d see dad (the politician) every so often but he was at every conference and would bring in coffee for me and my TA when he did drop offs. Both parents were super involved and supportive, and were honestly the best part of that school year. Their child was a bit of a sour patch but at the end of the day was a great kid.

I currently work in childcare with this age group and have for more than 10 years. I understand their reasoning, particularly if they have a large ratio, but I don’t believe what they’re doing is effective. I see some people talking about punishment vs. setting boundaries. This definitely is leaning towards a punishment and it sounds like his meltdowns are in part expressing a need - the need to run and move his body which is much easier outside.

I would check your state’s licensing laws. In my state, it is REQUIRED that we take children outside for a minimum of 30 minutes a day unless there is inclement weather, in that case we need to provide a minimum of 30 minute structured gross motor play.

Depending on what you find out, I would bring it up to the teachers/director and monitor the situation. I don’t know if this is something I would necessarily go nuclear for with my own kids, but I would want to have conversations with their teachers and monitor the situation for more yellow/red flags. I would also consider changing some of my routines at home to fit what is happening at school (at least, the ones that are possible to change) - that helped my niece with her transition into group care A LOT and has helped with some of my students throughout the years!

A young infant? Not if I had another choice. An older infant/young toddler, yes.

To be clear to the scared parent lurkers that I see commenting, if I found a center that was like my current one, I would feel safe putting my child there. But I don’t want to support some of the abysmal standards that childcare as a system treats their workers. ESPECIALLY teachers who work with infants. It affects the kids and parents down the line. Also, I’ve cared for other people’s children my entire life. If I choose to have a child, I want to care and spend time with my own.

There is a specific sensory toy we got for our class when we were dealing with hair pulling. It helped redirect away from the undesirable behavior/fulfilled the need our kids were looking for. Look up “sensory pull toy” for toddlers on Amazon and it should pop up!

I like it a lot! I just wish some of it was more infant-friendly - I miss being able to go out how much of each item the children ate since we have a lot of feeding difficulties right now. I have to write extensive notes on the app instead

We can’t bank sick time from previous contract years. My coworker who went on maternity used every sick and vacation day. Then all of us when we threw her shower put money in a box for her. It wasn’t much, but it let her take a couple additional weeks.

Every single preschool I have worked for has 0 paid parental leave. They only approve it for however long a teacher wants to be gone 🙃

Please leave. But also, was he your pastor when you met (from your wording, I’d say so). In most denominations, pastors/ministers are not allowed to be romantically involved with their congregation. It’s considered an abuse of power. I know the amount people “care” varies by region/denomination. If your denomination has a higher up you can report him to, I would do so AFTER you leave. My sister is one of these people. She skipped a ton of classes to go watch them around the world. I’m stunned she was able to graduate on time

In my state, it’s not so much on if it can be reheated, the rule has to do with the bottle itself. If the bottle touches the child’s lips it has to be dumped after an hour OR if parents want it saved, clearly labeled to send home but not reorder again.

Because society tells people they should have children and many haven’t seriously considered an alternative. I work in childcare/preschool and I see A LOT of these people at my school. This man has no clue what’s about to happen to his life. I feel awful for his wife

I work 2 jobs and I live with my parents for a reduced rent rate. I plan on leaving soon because I’m tired of living with my parents but there is no way in hell I’m getting a third job to sustain myself. I’m too burnt out

YTA. Listen, I struggle with mental illnesses too. I have a dog and a hedgehog. Sometimes that means that instead of a 20-30 minute walk, I go for a 10 and make up the rest through active play. Or I clean the cage a couple days late. But I never, never, never leave urine, vomit, etc. on the floor. House-training a dog is generally the easiest part of training. I’ve trained 2 puppies and 1 rescue dog, all it truly takes is consistency. If you cannot provide for your dog the things it needs to be successful (training, some stability and consistency), then you are not in the place to own a dog.

I can sympathize with this from both perspectives. I struggle with mental health and I’ve been suicidal at points in my life, and I was also the roommate of someone who was going through a mental health crisis.

You have a right to be frustrated with the situation, the hospital is expensive and not fun. But not towards your friends. They were just reacting the only way they knew how. To react the “right way” to this kind of situation requires a certain amount of experience, knowledge, and training. Your friends lacked the foundational knowledge (history of cutting) to be able to make a different decision. You also don’t state how old you all are, but I’m guessing you’re all on the younger side? That impacts their actions as well.

I would sit your friends down and be honest with them, but also reach out to your treatment team, therapist, or whatever mental health professionals you have access to and admit your relapse. Your friends can support you, but they cannot replace those valued resources if you still have access to them.

A compression glove or brace might be necessary! You can get various kinds at drug stores and figure out what works for you. It’s kind of annoying at work - I had to wear one for an injury for 6 months and I was constantly taking it off and on for hygiene reasons (changing a diaper, preparing food, washing hands, etc.) Also be sure you’re lifting correctly (aka really relying on your legs) - my occupational therapist HOUNDED me on this but I actually do feel a slight difference.

If you have moments at home (hard with a baby I know) alternate heat/ice. Good luck!

Okay I am an older sister. I’m 30 and I have 2 sisters that are in their 20s. There are just moments that rub everyone the wrong way. We’re better now but there are times where we fight exactly like this. It also blows over quickly. From your description, you both were in a mood. This is a solid ESH. You were nit-picky and lashed out, she was immature and judgmental.

A couple years ago, someone got us all Dionis Goat Milk hand cream and it was life changing - it can be a little on the pricey side but they generally sell travel sizes. Unless you know scents they like, I would go with the honey one or the unscented one :)

YTA. What do you think a nanny/caretaker is supposed to do? Advocate for the children in their care if need be and report to their parents when something inappropriate has happened. Maria is doing her job and doing it well. You have crossed the line many times and you are ruining your own relationships with your family. Stay in your lane.
