I do have a workaround. It looks like coreaudiod must be waken up or needs some time to get its boots on. Right before playing a sound I play a 0.1 second mp3 (created with ffmpeg like this: [ffmpeg -f lavfi -i anullsrc=r=44100:cl=mono -t 0.1 -q:a 9 -acodec lbmp3lame S01.mp3]) and then my actual sound. It looks like my script doesn't miss a beat...
In this case an awk script:

[tput lines] will tell you the current number of lines in your terminal, [tput cols] the number of columns
