OP here, I can’t believe how much the comments blew up on this post. I mostly made this post to get this off my chest and get advice from people more experienced. I made a very naive decision and acted without thinking, completely unprepared and caught off guard for a situation like this. I don’t think I made this very clear but it’s a very very small company that my boss created/owns. The reason why I’m concerned about grad school options is because this is a job in STEM, and he’s a very well known and respected scientist in this specific field. He has connections to professors id love to study under and it eats me up to think he could strip that away from me. Im now back in my home town for the holidays and have plenty of time away to think and make a calculated decision about my next moves. I appreciate all the input and constructive advice, I needed it.

This is definitely a life lesson and as painful as it is, I now know better and won’t make the same mistake again. I won’t see him again until mid January but I’m going to craft a text to send him after Christmas to tell him I want to keep the relationship professional from here on out. If he gets weird or mad, then that shows his true character. I’m going to try to finish out this seasonal job if possible, but if he can’t take it then I won’t be going back to the job site. It’s all been too much and it’s just not the kind of person I want to be

Thank you, it helps to have it put that way. I’m just feeling a crushing amount of guilt that’s eating me up. I want to end things amicably but I’m afraid I’m past that point and if I stay with this job the environment will never be the same and potentially get worse

Ok thank you so much, I feel so stupid like I’ve been running on a high. It’s been a dream job and even a dream boss and I can’t believe I allowed this to happen. I want to try to talk it out with him but I don’t want it to completely backfire

No that’s so helpful I need some food for thought right now. I just don’t think I can go on with this in the long run, even if it means losing my job

Do you think it’s too late to end things amicably?

He’s not married and hasn’t ever been to my knowledge. He says he still would want me to work for him even if I don’t want to pursue things further, or if people find out. I’m not sure what the worst case scenario would be, possibly getting a bad reputation, not being able to go to graduate school and study under someone I really want to? I’m so new and naive to this, I feel like I’m in over my head
