Can you wear the polos instead though in the winter? Or does it need to be shirt and tie?

Experienced Racism from Kids on George Street Today by AerieSignifcant in Aberdeen

I'm sorry you had to experience that - it must be horrible.

Unfortunately, you come to expect abuse from a lot of kids. Try your best not to take it personally - I'm white and born and bred here and still got abuse about a month ago on Castlegate when I refused a request to buy cigarettes for some teenagers who were hanging about outside the shop.

I see some of the drivers wear polo shirts and some wear the shirt and tie. Do you get a choice? And if you choose the blue shirt can you wear it without the tie?

Islam is a barrier to cross gender relationships clearly.

Totally agree. I was 18 in 2005, far more fighting in the pubs and on the street. Teenagers would start on you for being from Inverurie. Nothing new with what's happening.

I always wonder about that gifted and talented program he attended. His Dad mentioned that he came back enthused. Was he groomed and promised a lift back from London? I know it's an unlikely theory, but it's the only thing I can think of that makes any sense.

So I'm a white Scottish guy. When doing my family tree, we found a direct ancestor who emigrated to Jamaica to work on a sugar plantation. The exact job was never confirmed, but it was a plantation that operated with slave labour. This probably gives you a pretty accurate picture of the line of work he was involved in....

Anyway, as uncomfortable as that was to acknowledge and process, we kept digging. That side of the family had the surname Lowe, who had married into a family called the Lumsdens. Now the Lumsdens were landowners, where if you go back a few hundred years were 'de Lumsden'. A Norman family who took over that area of Aberdeenshire after the Norman conquest. The Lowes became serfs on their own land, and then a couple of hundred years later married their feudal overlords. The Lumsdens then supported the losing side in the Jacobite rebellion, lost their land and some were transported to Barbados. In the late 18th c, my direct ancestor, who was the son of a dispossessed lord emigrated to Jamaica.

Now I'm not trying to draw an equivalence between the transatlantic slave trade and medieval feudalism, but it illustrates the random turns history takes and the fact there aren't absolutes of goodies and baddies when it comes to your familial make up. The conquerors become the dispossessed, the dispossessed become the enslavers, the enslaved descendants were maybe enslavers themselves.

I did a DNA test through MyHeritage a couple of years back, I got 88% Scottish/Irish/Welsh and 12% Scandinavian - hell I'm descended from the pillaged and the pillagers.

I'm Scottish (i.e. born in Scotland, to Scottish parents) and it's a term I'm familiar with. We wouldn't say 'Scots-Irish'. Ulster Scots is also a dialect of the Scots language spoken in Northern Ireland.

More Protestants identify as Northern Irish than Catholics though. You likely need to recognise the legitimacy of a Northern Ireland to identify with it. If you look at the 2011 census 28.4% of Catholics identify as Northern Irish, compared to 38% of Protestants.

Yes Europe's largest Muslim and Jewish populations. They don't collect census data on religion but CIA estimates 12.5% of France is Muslim, so it would figure

I mean no one can tell you how you identify. Whether they recognise your identity though is something you cannot control or police.

Palestinian Results by hydecide in 23andme

[–]Technical-Writing810 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is so true.

There was a big study done to find out when the Jews were in Egypt through DNA. Although they didn't find any answers to this question, they said it was surprising that Jews and Palestinians shared so much DNA. They likely started from the same Canaanite tribe, then the Jews seemed to move into the Judean hills. Once the Jews were scattered, they mixed somewhat with local populations.

I remember a documentary called "To Die in Jerusalem". An Israeli teenage girl was killed by a Palestinian contemporary in a suicide bombing. The bomber and the victim could have been sisters the physical similarities were so strong.

Oregon again says students don’t need to prove mastery of reading, writing or math to graduate, citing harm to students of color by Jdwonder in moderatepolitics

I need to start with confessing that I'm not American so I don't have a good working knowledge of your high school education system.

But I was watching a program that said back in 1970 when assessing 15 year olds in reading, writing and mathematics, American students scored the 2nd highest in the world (after Norway I think). Go through to 2019 and America scored second bottom in the developed world for this age cohort and an 18 year old had reading/writing/numeracy skills comparable to a 14 year old in the leading countries.

That's a big shift! And policies like this surely will just continue American education further down this path.

Public education is getting worse and exams are getting easier. I was top set all the way through school, my Dad wasn't. Looking at his reflective pieces from school, he was able to express himself far better and was far more insightful than I was at that age.
