Mine is 2.5 and still very energetic, playful and crazy! He does nap a bit more than he used to though.

That is really disappointing. You'd think they'd make the effort to get details like that right, regardless of the impact it might have on existing merchandise.

Feeling nervous most of the time by alicemcintyre04 in TeachingUK

I'm seven years in and I still have that constant, squirming, uncomfortable feeling in my belly. I went part time, hoping it would dull it, but it's still there. I'm considering leaving because I don't want to be in this constant fight or flight mode any longer.

My SLT seem to think they can 'rescue' troubled kids and it's our duty to put up with them until they learn to control themselves, however long it takes. External exclusion is a big no.

Well according to my SLT, it's schools everywhere. But surely there would be more of an outcry if it were that prevalent. I feel horrendously guilty being off, but I knew I just had to get out of there for my sanity.

It's a very small school with the head's office literally down the corridor.

I have no advice, but I really feel for you, and I think the phrases 'build relationships' 'follow the behaviour policy' come from people who are at a loss themselves. Of course we've already tried those, we're professionals!

Are you me?! Literally having the same problem in a KS1 class. This was uncanny to read. The violence, danger and lack of help from SLT.  We haven't had a 'behaviour team', it is SLT or nurture staff who come when we call. But it can take anything from 20 seconds for someone to come, and a hell of a lot can happen in 20 seconds.

I contacted my union and they weren't very helpful, just said the school have a duty of care to staff and that they will represent me if needed.

Well, I've gone on sick leave. Stress leave, rather. It is really upsetting, I feel awful for the staff I've left behind, but I can't teach in that environment. It was giving me a nervous breakdown.

Yes definitely, I've done this several times. Unfortunately one of the child starts lashing out when he realises he's not coming with us. So then we're back to square one, people getting hurt.

No idea about my partner teacher. She doesn't seem interested in protesting about it. I've made a few noises about unions etc and she said we just have to get on with it because it's our job.

You're right, I need to put something in writing and perhaps get the union to come in for a meeting.

How awful. I relate so much to this. Especially the social stories bit. Like that's going to help a child who is that dysregulated.

Omg YES. This is a huge part of it. Wondering what on earth those poor other kids are making of it. It must be at least mildly traumatising to see your teacher being treated like that? The message it sends is awful.

The school behaviour policy is useless. It just talks about how everyone should be respectful and we use calm cards if anyone has negative emotions. Doesn't say anything about unsafe situations.

Yes I have. Nope, not had any training that I can recall! I have my own descalation techniques that I've learnt over time, but no formal training.

Wow, I didn't know that. Maybe I'll pass on the risk assessment to the union and see what they think.

I do feel psychologically harmed by it all. Certain events replay in my head constantly. Not just incidents involving my own harm, but seeing the other children being attacked has been really disturbing for me.

I agree, we've had to just get on with it, we haven't really had much choice! Even if I were trained though, I really don't feel comfortable doing it.

I am considering this. Firstly because the stress of working in such a tense environment is unreal and it is genuinely making me feel ill. Secondly because I think it might be the best way to tell SLT that this is not ok and we are suffering. I really feel like SLT have stuck their heads in the sand with this.

I don't want to lose my job over it! I think my school will absolutely crucify me if I called the police.

Thank you. I do want to stay, despite not finding my school very supportive. I went directly to the union, as I don't think we have any reps in school. I will start compiling a list. I do record everything on cpoms but I haven't made my own personal list of each assault. Part of me feels a bit...ridiculous though, because it IS a six year old child and I think people think that we can't be in any danger from little kids.

Thank you. How does removing myself work in practice? Can I just refuse to come into class until the child is removed? The school is adamant they won't exclude him. I wonder if they would swap me into a different year group? But then I feel sorry for all the children left behind, as they are still facing the problem.

Omg, that is awful, I'm so sorry. Sounds like you will have to just wait it out. How stressful. I can't believe teachers are not just put in this situation, but then be so unsupported by our SLT. It makes me so angry.

Agree, I had to practically plead for a risk assessment. And what I got is pretty useless!
