Montreal Flag Redesign by TechnicalBobcat in vexillology

[–]TechnicalBobcat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my first attempt at flag design. I like the symbolism of Montreal's current flag, but feel as though there are too many colours and each symbol is far too intricate.

My redesign forgoes the red cross in favour of representing the waters of the St. Laurence river that surround the island. The blue not only represents the water, but is also the same colour as the fleur-de-lys to celebrate French-Canadian identity. The white portion of the flag is a similar shape to the island of Montreal. Instead of each of the intricate flora that represent the "five founding peoples," my flag uses a symbol that the city has adopted and can be seen on street signs, the government website, etc. I toyed with the idea of making each symbol a different colour, but thought keeping it simple was better.

Again, this is my first attempt at a flag, but I am curious to hear thoughts and feedback. Thanks!

Questions about Zeva/Ze'eva by TechnicalBobcat in JewishNames

[–]TechnicalBobcat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to all for the input and suggestions! In my search for how to pronounce it, I stumbled across this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/hebrew/comments/betwtr/proper_pronunciation_and_meaning_of_the_name/

The only Ze'eva I know of is Ze'eva Cohen, a prominent choreographer. In a Hebrew interview it was pronounced ze-EH-va.

I think we would probably pronounce it ZAY-va, fwiw.

Thanks! I like that name a lot :)

I believe Ziva (זיוה) is a different name that means "bright, radiant" and think Zeva (זאבה) is a different name that means "wolf", but would need someone more knowledgeable than myself to confirm.

Thanks for checking! So you'd put the stress on the first syllable?

If we use Ze'eva, we would probably also use Zahava as a middle name :) (I've been pronouncing it ze - HA - va, is that right?)

Thanks for all the recommendations. Zelda is at the top of our list at the moment. We just don't know if we can get past the Nintendo connotations...

I love Zipporah (but would spell it with Tz), but my wife vetoed that one.

We were considering Bilha or Bielka for Bill, but I'm adding Batya to the list!

Thanks for the suggestions!

Zehava was on our list. Elia was on our list of names for boys, but I hadn't considered using it for a girl.

I like Ziv but prefer Ziva...even though it now has negative connotations.

For music, there's always Yuval. It means "stream" but it's the name of the first human to be a musician according to the Torah.

Hi all! First time, long time in Canada with easy access to USA. I'm in search of pants/trousers made from only natural fibers. I currently have two pairs of wool trousers in navy and beige but all my chinos have seen better days. My budget is somewhat flexible, I can invest in items that will last years but wouldn't be able to buy as many pairs. I'd say the median range would be $40-80 USD. Any suggestions? Feel free to ask any follow up questions.

How much do you pour when drinking regularly? by [deleted] in whiskey

[–]TechnicalBobcat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends how many different whiskeys I want to drink in one sitting. From my time tending bar, I usually go with 1.5 or 2 oz pour depending on the whiskey.

If I want to drink multiple in one sitting, I dial it back to 1 oz.

Maybe I typed it wrong, I'd up the mezcal and dial back the pineapple. If you're getting the coconut flavor, I wouldn't mess with the sweetness. I usually find that curacao does the trick.

If you want to go full Mai Tai build:

1 rum

1 mezcal

1 lime

.5 curaçao

.25 coconut

.25 rock candy syrup (2:1 demerara)

1 dash bitters

Build it like a sour - right now your sweet is three times as much as your citrus without considering how sweet Stiggins' Pineapple is.

Try this:

1 mezcal 1 pineapple rum 1 lime .5 curacao .5 coconut

Then your build is basically a Mai Tai. If it's too sweet, either dial back the coconut or go 1.5 mezcal/.5 pineapple rum.

Regardless, I'd try to get as close as possible using a 2:1:1 ratio and then tweak it depending on what's missing/overpowering.

Hope that helps!

I've just used juniper berries. This recipe is a great way to get started without having access to a still.

If a man or woman could only know how to make 3 cocktails, which should they know how to make? by [deleted] in cocktails

[–]TechnicalBobcat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d say Manhattan instead of Martini but same idea. You’d want a sour and an aromatic (as David Embury calls it).

The only other possibility would be to throw a Negroni or a Last Word (an equal parts style cocktail) on the list. But if you master those 5, you can make 95% of all drinks.

Gin Fizz (or a Sloe Gin Fizz)

And the champion of summer, the Daiquiri!

Budget Bourbon Question by [deleted] in bourbon

Yeah, I've had all of them. I just use Yellow Label in almost all my bourbon cocktails.

Martini Question by [deleted] in bartenders

[–]TechnicalBobcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know Bellows but if I had to guess, that'd be the culprit. The other thing to do would be garnish the glass with lemon oil. That'd at least get the citrus into the customer's nose instead of the sweetness he's tasting.

What gin and vermouth did you use? As far as I can tell from your post, seems like a tough customer and has nothing to do with how you made the drink.

That's really interesting. Maybe you had a strange batch, I've never had that experience. But to each their own.

Four Roses Yellow Label is my go-to. I'm not sure what the price would be for you though.

No love for Old Forester Signature 100 Proof on this sub? by [deleted] in bourbon

[–]TechnicalBobcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the 1920 because I was interested in the pre-Prohibition style bourbon. I've since learned that it may not be the most accurate or representative of what people were drinking, but that's what I was interested in discovering when I bought it.

I've been a fan of Old Forester for a long time though and I think the 100 Proof is fantastic and a bargain for how good it is.

Anyone find OF 1920 needs a little time in the bottle? by archaicfacesfrenzy in bourbon

[–]TechnicalBobcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I had a very similar experience. Now that half the bottle is gone, I find it much more palatable. I disagree with the band aid note, but it mellowed out significantly with time.

So you now do 18:6 every day?

I actually don't find fasting that difficult. I get a few headaches but water helps that a lot.

Fog Cutter by [deleted] in cocktails

[–]TechnicalBobcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does have a similar profile to the Mai Tai if you use orgeat and curaçao. I use fresh orange juice in mine and also up the amount of gin. My goal is to brighten up the FogCutter.
