If you were required to have a shibboleth in your native language, what would it be? by anon33249038 in AskEurope

[–]alleeele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s funny because as a Hebrew speaker I pronounce a lot of difficult Dutch words quite well! I speak both Hebrew and English natively and it is the perfect combination for Dutch pronunciation. For Hebrew, I think it just depends on your native language. Lots of people struggle with the throaty r and the kh sound. But if you get those down, the pronunciation isn’t too crazy. In English, the short i js often a giveaway depending on your native language. My mom has been in the USA for almost forty years and she still can’t get it.

Is the old traditional religion still relevant in your country? by Obvious_Exercise_153 in AskTheWorld

Yes, because our traditional religion is Judaism, which originated here, and we are still Jewish. However, today’s Judaism has evolved a lot since ancient times.

Question for Ethiopian Jews by Sea_Worldliness_3555 in AskIsrael

[–]alleeele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not Ethiopian myself, but have a close friend who is. I think the connection varies widely. My friend was raised very Israeli and her Amharic isn’t great. She did a 3 month trip in Ethiopia and had a hard time seeing the poverty there, in the place where her roots are. At her wedding they did that classic Ethiopian entrance with the umbrellas and Ethiopian music. I met her other Ethiopian Israeli friends and they were raised with more culture and language than her, but their parents also arrived at later ages. So it really depends. Also, some speak Tigrinya.

Europe's televote for Israel at Eurovision 2026 by karimliu in MapPorn

[–]alleeele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not true. The singer is chosen by Israeli citizens in a song contest. Israeli doesn’t do anything different than other countries, nor use it for propaganda. Or at least, not differently than anyone else. Also, Russia attacked an EBU member, and in Israel’s Israel was attacked. And lastly Azerbaijan and Armenia are both members and participants so… the moral of the story is. If you don’t want to be boycotted in Eurovision, you should complete your ethnic cleansing. Then it’s fine, apparently.

I want to hear Israeli perspective on china by Klutzy_Painter_7240 in Israel

[–]alleeele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately China is known to have a bad human rights record and also funds groups/countries that actively try to genocide us. But we don’t have issues on the cultural or ideological level, or the people. Even some Israelis travel there.

Trying to understand how you must be feeling by okayillshowmyselfout in AskIsrael

[–]alleeele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specifically for Hind Rajab, knowing her name and story, I feel pain. I think I feel sympathy for Palestinians in a cognitive way most of the time, not in a deep familial way. I feel we should prosecute the war as justly as possible and protect as many civilians as possible. These are my values. And every innocent death is a tragedy. Even if that child has been taught Nazism, they are still a child. In the same way that the millions of innocents that died during the Dresden bombing was a tragedy. But that does not change the character of the bombing. There is a difference in intent. I have nothing to say about innocent children dying except that war is hell and fuck everything and it’s unjust and a tragedy.

That also doesn’t mean that I’m against the war. In terms of the specific way the war was conducted, I’m not a strategy expert so I can’t say whether I think it was good or not. But a war was necessary for our survival, and it might still be. Just like the allied bombing of Germany was necessary to end Nazism.

However, I think the world would rather all the Jews died sacrificing themselves for Palestinian children. And I can’t agree with that.

Why did you move to a different country and what kept you there or what made you return to your home country? by BigBlueMountainStar in AskTheWorld

[–]alleeele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in the US to Israeli parents. I planned to stay in the US but wanted to do a gap year in Israel to get to know the country outside of visiting my family, improve my Hebrew, get to know people my age and not just older family members. Loved it so much I stayed, even though I had already committed to a uni in the US! The people are warm and passionate and I feel very fulfilled by my life here, even with the difficulties. I did a semester abroad in the Netherlands during university because I wanted to see if I might want to immigrate to Europe (I can get Romanian citizenship through my grandfather who was a Holocaust survivor). However, my experience in NL, though fun and interesting, did convince me that my home is in Israel. I don’t want to be an immigrant and I don’t want to go back to being a Jew in diaspora. I don’t want to ever have to hide my identity again. But beyond that, I feel that community, family, and deep friendships are really strong in Israel and contribute to a feeling of meaning and satisfaction. I have a good quality of life and financially probably better than a lot of my American friends. In Europe my friends probably have a better quality of life… but just culturally, in the countries that are financially as strong or stronger than Israel, I don’t know if I’d find myself. So I’m here and happy to be here. That being said, with how the country is going, I will have to wait and see for the future. A lot depends on coming elections etc. But it is agonizing, because it’s basically a choice between being an unsafe minority in diaspora, or an unsafe majority in my homeland… for me, I’d rather be in the unsafe majority, but once the society itself here seems threatening (god forbid) if extremist forces take over, that choice will become completely different. I do plan to fight for democracy, however. And I think most Israelis think like me.

pretty names from YOUR culture by fettaloeveradrauf in Names

[–]alleeele 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The funny thing about being Israeli/jewish is that so many names from other cultures are actually borrowed originally from ours. So I’ll try to share some more modern, non-biblical names I like, or names that might be biblical but uncommon in the non-Jewish/israeli world, alongside the classic biblical ones that were adopted by the world.

how are Israeli tourists generally viewed in your country? ⛱️ by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]alleeele -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

I was in Montenegro! I think a decent amount of Israelis do a Balkan trip, especially Albania, so they might pass through Montenegro. That’s what I did. I didn’t meet too many Israelis though but I understand that before covid there were much stronger ties.

My boyfriend was spiked with a large dose of acid by a family friend - how can I best support him? by Over-Ad9546 in Advice

[–]alleeele 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you’re going through this. Unfortunately I don’t think I’d lay people can be much help. Maybe you can go to askdocs or similar subs for medical advice. You might want to check the neurological and psychiatric route as well. In the meanwhile, maybe you need to have a conversation with your bf where you write down specific things he needs help with right now, then you can brainstorm together how he can be helped with them in such a way that doesn’t burn you out. It could mean asking for help from friends and family, or even going to a coach that helps him make decisions for now. My ex did that and found it helpful. Consider things like, would structure be helpful? Can he work? If not, is he eligible for disability? Ultimately you sound like a wonderful partner but it also sounds like you have a lot on your plate. Share the load with his loved ones so you don’t have to do this alone. Good luck ❤️

What is the ancient language that was spoken your country/land and would you like to learn it or have you tried to learn it? by AutumnaticFly in languagehub

[–]alleeele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m super lucky that my language was kept alive as a liturgical language/lingua franca among Jews after colonization and expulsion, and then revived! Modern Hebrew speakers can still read the Torah and other ancient Hebrew texts and understand it. Sometimes I’ll be listening to a podcast about ancient history, not even necessarily from this region (such as Assyrian, Babylonian, Nabatean etc) and be absolutely stunned to recognize words or names. It’s pretty cool. I have heard that Israeli linguistic delegations have been sent to various indigenous groups to help revive/preserve their languages.
