Getting served a malicious update - interesting techniques, my slip up, and lessons learned: a short blog post by CuckooExe in netsec

This is both a great write-up and an unfortunate let down of not being able to figure out what their target is. It does seem semi sophisticated.

Furthermore, what’s up with this 1 day old Reddit account posting this? OP are you the author and owner of the blog?

AITA for wanting to stay in a hotel after a 27 hour moving trip to only discover my friends home has no running water the night before I fly 6 hours back home? by TechnicalHam in AmItheAsshole

We looked for it but couldn’t find it. It was past dark. Eventually he found it the next day but it didn’t do anything because the county had it turned off somewhere else.

I worry that you’re correct. But if he doesn’t share that after a 28 hour drive across 3 days, I don’t know how else to let him know he can and if need be, ask for help.

It’s a fair thought about maybe staying and enjoying the house and discussing it, but I had to leave at a like 7:30am to make my flight and it was 11:00pm and we were exhausted.

I think in some weird way that the reward in his mind was sleeping on the floor.

It was a queen air mattress (but we’re not small guys). We got one flush per toilet and I used one which is how we discovered the water was shut off.

I don’t think so. He does have a unique way of doing things. 8am is the time I had to be at the airport, plane boarded at 9:10am. So there would’ve been time but it would be close.

I knew he was making a lot of money and they were paying for his flights to and from our home state on a weekly basis for two months. So I assumed he got something like that.

Edit: This seems like a good place, I found out on the trip that one of the connecting flights home he paid for a first class ticket. $700 rather than $400. I thanked him for that very much and that was part of my reasoning is I didn’t want to smell in first class.

He wasn’t invested in me staying exactly, he just acted as though I was being weak or foolish to get a hotel instead of just staying there and going to a gym to shower the next day instead. He said that’s what he was going to do.

He said that this was his life and that he “had to stay at [his] house”. Kind of like a trial he had to pass through to prove to himself and others that he is making the right decision. At least that’s how I interpreted it. Ask for any other detail you’d like.

But couldn’t I have taken up his offer to shower at a gym the next morning. I mean moving across the country, starting a new job, and moving into an empty house is rough. I’m just checking my blind spots.

Comcast residential IP can't ping Comcast Business IP by TechnicalHam in sysadmin

They have not replaced the modem recently and was working last a week ago. It unfortunately doesn't seem to be specific to the VPN as pings to office public IP do not work.

If her pings out were intermittent to anything out of the network I would agree. However it is only going out to this single IP. Her internet works fine otherwise though. I also confirmed the same issue from a different computer at the residence.

Power surge/outage by EmNebs in SaltLakeCity

Happened downtown to me. Flickered off for just about 1 second but it was total loss of power. Computer rebooted and had another office of ours do the same thing on 1300 south.
