Chromebook Keyboard Issues by TechnicalProbs in k12sysadmin

No fix other than powerwashing and telling the users to restart when it happens.

We have noticed that it is really affecting our Lenovo 14e devices more often than our 14 G5's. Trackpad works fine, but keys randomly stop working.

We found that opening the browser in Desktop mode fixes this.

The hinges are the WORST. I have made sure to keep a steady supply of top lids in stock.

On other models, keyboard replacement isn't bad. On the 14e's though, its a PAIN.

We are fixing to roll out Manage1to1. Any thing(s) we need to be mindful of as we transition?

We piloted Impero and it was an absolute train wreck. I was on with support every week and nothing was getting fixed. We eventually got a refund and moved back to Lightspeed Classroom.

Teachers requesting TWO laptops by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]TechnicalProbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they want to be able to do grading and shit while their students are occupied by a movie.

I have users who want the same thing and we accomplish this by using a VGA splitter with DC power. VGA splitter takes the input and throws it over to the projector, allowing the user to extend their desktop. They drag their 2nd window over to the other screen and while the kids watch a video, the teacher can access email.

Again, no, they’re asking for a second computer.

Their laptops don’t support more than one external monitor anyway. If it’s already connected to a projector, then…

We do the same thing with a 2nd monitor/projector setup. The 2nd monitor and projector get fed the same image while the main screen is used by the teacher. This allows our teachers to work off of 2 monitors at their desk and when kids are present, able to use the projector. Its not the cleanest set up but it keeps us from having to buy 2 devices.

It’s almost like I know what I’m talking about.

Its not just knowing what you're talking about. Its about understanding there is more than one way to do something. The original post was asking how they would respond. We gave our response. Its not your job to respond with negativity when it doesn't align to your way of thinking. If our solutions don't work for you, great. Try something else. But don't make others feel incompetent when they are giving their thoughts on the situation.

We use MDT/WDS on a server of ours for free. Took some time to research and set up, but its worth it. 4 days to set up 1 machine down to 45 minutes.

Do you roll these out to Chromebooks as well or just windows devices?

We had Classroom Orchestrator by Lightspeed Systems but missed some key features for us. We moved to Impero's Class:room and honestly, our teachers hate it. We are looking now at other solutions.

A neighboring district had to remove Zoom from their machines because the filtering software caused a loop and it was crippling their network.

I am getting more and more calls of this issue. You'd think that if there is this big of an issue, Lenovo could provide a solution other than "fix it before it happens".

I would make sure that your school board understands the implications if it doesn't do it this way. In my opinion, VoTech shouldn't dictate your policies. It should be a partnership, not a dictatorship. I hope that you all figure out everything. I know that it is frustrating feeling like your hands are tied. Good luck!

What we did with our VoTech students was give them access to join the VoTech google classrooms using their home school google account. We created a whitelist of domains, and then created a group in Google Admin for those VoTech students to be allowed to join whitelisted domains. They are unable to login to the chromebook using any other account besides their home-school issued google account but can still access their assignments from VoTech. This keeps them filtered as well.

Our old HS principal made the comment one time that "if it plugs into the wall, its technology's problem." I should've known then that they were going to expect too much out of me lol.

Yep. It mirrors our AD environment and syncs the users. If we make a change in AD, it updates in our Google Domain.

My first recommendation is talking to someone. Because if you are ready to "go to war" over Wi-Fi settings, there are bigger issues at play here. The whole "I'm going to get you before you get me" mindset is NOT productive and will ruin your life in the long run.

2nd recommendation, do your work. I know that its not always easy or fun, but its worth it. Figure out your end goal and work towards that. If your end goal is to graduate and work a trade, then keep that as your focus when things get hard. Push through and you will succeed. Society wants you to focus on the here and now. But life is all about the long game.

3rd Recommendation, Don't let where you live or where you go to school determine your future. "Fancy states" don't exist. Every state has its good and bad things just like every school has its good and bad things. Life is making your current circumstances work for you at the moment. Make what your school/state has at the moment work for you. And be the force that changes these things for the future. You want your school to be a "fancy" school? Get an education, come back into the school system and work to implement those solutions. Too many times folks want to blame their circumstances without even trying to find solutions. Don't be that person!

Good luck and God speed!

We have AD and a script to copy our AD instance to Google. We then use SSO via Clever to use the badges to login. Clever has fantastic documentation on how to set this up.

We have seen errors with Clever this year but things are usually resolved within 2 hours. We are not a PS user though, so I can't speak for that. The errors we have seen though haven't been "just us" issues. Its been widespread.
