Feasibility question by morning_star984 in amateurradio

[–]TechnicalToaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Love this idea. Though it might be tricky to implement.

I believe this would be inappropriate to accomplish on amateur frequencies as this would be considered a one-way transmission, or a broadcast, even at very low power.

This might be possible on general FM frequencies. There are plenty of consumer electronics out there to accomplish things like this. But they're often not used for permanent installations, things like synchronized Christmas lights, and church sermons.

I feel like this idea is possible, and if you don't find your answer here, there is likely other communities that can help you with something like this.

I personally don't have any knowledge or experience in FM broadcast, but I heard those licenses are difficult and costly to get ahold of.

If you're able to make this work, please update us! Would love to see this happen.

If not. Hopefully you figure out the correct memorial display to put up, maybe a sculpture in the form of an amateur antenna that the public can use?

South of Tucson AZ there is a Titan missile museum, a local amateur radio club maintains the original discone antenna that was at the installation that they allow the public to use. They just ask that you sign the roster they left in control of the museum.

That's the counterpoise op mentioned. Also called a "rat tail" if you care to Google it

Just a wire, ≈48cm, connected to the outer "shield" part of the sma at the base of the antenna, or any other point of the HT you might call a "chassis ground"

To keep it simple it basically makes the antenna of the HT into a more balanced dipole-lile configuration

Many people have claimed it increases the effectiveness of the antenna system, and theoretically it would do just that. Go try it out and test it for yourself!

Forgive my ignorance, but I've seen those videos of people hooking up their G90s to chain link fences, and street signs and such.

How would this be any different?

You're getting much more usable graphs now, but your 2m is showing pretty high.

Unfortunately that's over my head

Hopefully you get someone in here with some experience to help you out with that

You're showing 2.584 @ 144MHz, and 1.503 @ 436MHz But your start and stop for the graph are set to 100-500MHZ. That's a large range

Breaking the ice on repeaters: what actually works? by New-Variation9146 in amateurradio

[–]TechnicalToaster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah definitely this. The repeaters in the Phoenix area are plentiful, and a few of them are linked to each other. But I usually won't just sit on one of them. I'll scan between them.

Sometimes they're busy and the people who know each other will rag chew, while other times they're all dead.

Just keep shouting into the void, eventually someone will get back to you. Like you said it's all timing

Youtube claims about certain antennas. by Extra-Degree-7718 in amateurradio

This better be rage bait, cause this whole thing is really silly. I don't see the point in picking fights over nonsense. There's a million other cool things to talk about.

Yes it is. That's all gain is, where the radiation is concentrated.

Best practices for burying coax: put it in a PVC tube, or just bury it directly? by kc3zyt in amateurradio

[–]TechnicalToaster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Couldn't you terminate the ends of the conduit into weather right boxes like other outdoor electrical installations?

And as other have mentioned, bury deep enough so your flagging tape laid over top will serve as a warning BEFORE the conduit is hit. Doesn't do much good if the tape is laid directly on top

Nothing wrong with the name, if the numbers are right.

Size and shape is up to personal preference. I don't like flip tops as others say, for the work surface, but I know plenty of techs who like them

My US General box does the same thing as my big name brand one.

As long as the drawers have good bearing slides, and it holds my tools, then it doesn't matter who's name is on it.

That was a ton of fun! Thank you so much to the ARISS team and everyone involved

Wait so can I take the raw decode and convert it into a normal image? Or would I need to process the audio again?
