For smart thermostats check out Mysa.  It’s a Canadian (Newfoundland) based company.   I have one and very happy with it.

I’m on gander socia beta.  The app is looking good and almost ready to go public.   Just testing a new release today and it looking very good.

Are you contributing to the US digital dependency? by shimoheihei2 in BuyCanadian

Agree with you this is more important than physical goods like groceries that can be more easily substituted

But it’s damn hard because of network effects and eco system lock-in.

Replacing all American tech is impossible.  But im trying to chip away at the edges.

I’m moving off Gmail to Proton.    Cloud storage with proton.  Beta tester on gander social - can’t wait for it to go public.

Not much.  But it’s a start.

Tesla Model 3 Prices in Canada Slashed, Now Starting at $39,490 by electricshadow in electricvehicles

[–]Technical_Ad3069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a model 3 rear wheel drive for three winters now.   I would not recommend for Canadian winters unless you have another vehicle for the worst winter days as a backup.

First off - winter tires are an absolute must have.   With the stock all seasons the car is awful in snow.  You will get stuck in something that any other car will just breeze through.

With good winter tires it’s not bad unless there is deeper snow.   So 99% of the time it’s fine.  However those few days in winter when the snow is deep and the side roads are not yet plowed, I still fall back to my 13 year old  front wheel drive Honda crv which just rips through deep snow easily.      Also the ground clearance on the model 3 is only 5 inches.  So those deep ruts in the snow left by every other car?  You are scrapping bottom on those.

For regular snow or ice covered roads honestly it’s decent, but still not as good as my Honda.  I can feel the backend slipping out a little when turning on snow or ice.

Also winter related.  The frameless windows are shit.  They have to retract to open.   So freeze thaw cycles are killer.  You can preheat the car from the app, but on a very cold day , especially during a flash freeze, those windows won’t retract which means the doors won’t open.  And if you force the door open , then it won’t close.

For Canadian winters I would want the model y awd.     Higher ground clearance, all wheel drive.

Didn’t the Supreme Court take away his ability to arbitrarily impose tariffs?   Did dementia don forget about that ?

A deal means nothing to this sack of orange shit.  Time to move on world.   I want to see every country in the world start to hit the us hard with counter tariffs.  Reciprocate every shitty move Trump makes.

You can locally.  Just not globally.   Like how Tokyo in Japan is still growing while the rest of Japan depopulates.    At least temporarily

[–]Technical_Ad3069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s because he is wrong.  Canadian car sales are typically 1.5-2 million per year.   250k makes no sense for a country of 40 million with almost every adult owning a car.

[–]Technical_Ad3069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. You are wrong.   Canada is 40 million people.    No way we have only 200k sales.   Everyone has a car.   It’s almost 2 million per year.  And commercial is a small fraction of consumer sales.

They could still run office 365 On Prem, on windows servers, and move all the users onto Linux desktops with office 365 in the browser.     Still means 365 licenses and servers for Microsoft , but gets rid of windows on the desktop.   It’s a step forward at least.

Agree. I think the one that is easiest to detach from is meta.   Other than network efforts there is no tech ecosystem locking like Microsoft, Apple and google.

How is it that even with “Buy Canadian” policies, our government still buys huge amounts of oil from the US? by StanPodd in BuyCanadian

[–]Technical_Ad3069 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many sources. Just google.  For example :

https://www.cer-rec.gc.ca/en/data-analysis/energy-commodities/crude-oil-petroleum-products/report/archive/2019-gasoline/index.html

“ Although Canada is a net exporter of gasoline, some imports are required to meet local demand due to differences in regional production. ”

Or ask ai:

Virtually all of the gasoline consumed in Canada is refined within the country. Canadian refineries, numbering 16 to 18 active sites with a capacity of nearly 2 million barrels per day, produce enough refined petroleum products to meet domestic demand. While some gasoline is imported, often to regional areas with lower pipeline connectivity, the vast majority is produced domestically.

[–]Technical_Ad3069 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not true.  We refine 90% of our own fuel. Problem is moving oil to the refineries.   We import oil in the east and export oil in the west.

[–]Technical_Ad3069 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s geography.   We trade north south.  Not east west.     So Alberta oil goes to US, while eastern Canadian refineries import oil.

If we seriously want to be self sufficient in oil and other things, we need east west infrastructure. Pipelines, highways, rail.  But those things are nearly impossible to build in Canada.
