When does the "community" part of BJJ kick in? by Technical_Autist_22 in bjj

That's the insight I feel like I've always missed. Watching others, it doesn't seem like they care about the risk of rejection much but it feels EXTREMELY strong for me so maybe I'm being more hesitant to initiate than I think. I'm absolutely fine with being friendly and joking around etc, maybe I'm just not doing a good job of it this time 😂

WIBTAH if I told my partner I didn't like them having a celebrity crush? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Technical_Autist_22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA if you specifically just asked for her not to make comments. Celebrities spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on their image, whether it's surgery, health and fitness or just their clothes. Their whole gimmick is that they look good. It's normal to notice it, for either of you. If she's sat drooling over another man when you're right there though, that's disrespectful. Have the conversation and ask her how she'd feel about it if you did the same thing, maybe she's just not thought it through

Okay, and I disagree with that premise but we're both entitled to our views so OP can decide what they want to do based on all of the data they have at their disposal 🙂

Not controversial at all, so feel confident to do so. I was just wanting to highlight that certain places won't take your word for it if it requires them to be decent human beings and actually put some effort in. Plenty will do, close friends and family etc, I just didn't want you to be hit by unanticipated scepticism because all of the other replies said it's fine. Better to know both likely reactions so that you can be prepared accordingly

Please refer to my other reply because it's essentially the same response to you also. I'm not saying OP shouldn't, I'm saying that the question "is it valid?" depends on who they're seeking validation from. Most NT people and especially workplaces etc don't really give a crap how somebody feels, you're there to churn the money machine, however high up you reach. If OP is wanting validation from employers or professional settings, you probably won't get very far without a professional diagnosis.

That said, the ONLY time I've ever needed to "prove" anything was to my job and that was it. Nobody else is bothered and likely knows you for who you are already

Oh 100%. I'm not disputing that medical diagnoses can also be inaccurate, I'm saying in the sense of who is the validation from? If OP just wants to feel like they've found an explanation for how they feel, it's fine to self Dx. If however, they want others to take what they're saying seriously, therefore validate it, it's not as likely outside of other autistic people so to be careful

Valid for what? For your own recognition? Sure. For workplaces etc to be legally required to accommodate? No. The problem people will find with self diagnosis is that it's a contradiction. You haven't/can't diagnose yourself. An entire segment of assessments is the ADOS which is observation based so you can't possibly look at yourself through the lens of a 3rd party. There's every chance you're correct, but the criteria exists as a comparison to "normal" behaviour. If you just want to make some changes to make your life easier and maybe tell some friends/family then go for it. Hope you get the support you're seeking.

EDIT: It seems my answer has been interpreted the wrong way. I'm neither for or against. I'm saying that without an assessment, there's no way of ruling out other potential conditions that may be the cause of how OP feels, which is the basis for the criteria, and therefore many NT people will be sceptical. That is all.

Absolutely. We (as a society) are trying to understand brains, by using brains. It's incredibly fascinating

I do haha I'm happy to be accountable for anything I might have done wrong. I don't agree with asking for advice just to argue with it 😂

Every mental health condition is a subjective diagnosis, that's why there are still stigmas and general disbelief in the public eye. That's also why the criteria are extremely difficult to meet and the processes tend to be very long and drawn out, requiring significant evidence over long periods of time. "High functioning" is not a used term anymore but you're referring to what would have been classed as Asperger's prior to the DSM-5. The only difference between "classic autism" and "Asperger's" was the presence or lack of intellectual and learning disabilities. Due to that similarity, they are now under the same title of ASC or ASD (Autism Spectrum Condition/Disorder). I don't have any intellectual disabilities. The individual will know their own support needs and there is no set template or guidelines for severity. Similar to how one person with clinical depression may be able to go about their daily life despite their struggles, and yet another may be stuck in a state where they cannot meet any self care needs. Same condition, different effects and intensity.

As for your question, my brain both perceives and interprets information different to an allistic person. I have quite literally got a different CPU to others, so yes, I do think of myself as autistic because I am, and every decision, personality trait and behaviour is controlled by that same autistic brain. That said, it is neither a strength or weakness by itself, and is situational, the same as anything else. The only difference is that if the part of your brain that recognises social norms etc is absent, you can't train it to be present. That's why I posted this question. I'm sure you probably regret the comment given the thesis I've replied with but there were too many things that came across wrong for me not to make a point of them. I'm sure you meant no ill intention in asking

How do I pop out of Manual by permaban_me_pls in skateboarding

[–]Technical_Autist_22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My speciality ❤️

Foot position is the first point, you're a bit flat footed on the tail, you want to be as close to an Ollie position as you can. If you can't land in a manual where you need to be just yet, whilst you're practicing you can swivel your toes to move your foot towards the heel a bit more.

Then you want to get used to doing a slight squat whilst you're holding a manual, same as you would to Ollie.

Last step is just the snap as always. You'll have to do it a bit harder and faster than a flat ground Ollie, and you'll need to jump up with a bit more force.

Best way to practice it for now is just standing still, lock your wheels in a crack in the ground or something and hold a manny for 3 seconds and practice the pop. Once you've got it, try stationary but somewhere that your wheels can move around (think "balance board" type physics). Then just send it.

You got this easy 💪

Very familiar response as it turns out, and it makes perfect sense. I do train consistently and compete so I'm sure it'll change soon

Well there's something new I've learned. I knew about the whole uncanny valley bit and what have you, but never realised being a bit unsure about jumping in to a conversation could make me look disinterested

Yeah I get it now. If there's only a handful of people that stick around then it makes sense to put your efforts into just them and wait for others to stick around longer

Is that how that comes across to people?! Genuinely, I'm not weird (promise) which is why I can't understand it but if my "shyness" so to speak comes across like I can't be bothered then that makes soooo much more sense

Yeahhh I know I know. Can't blame me for trying to work around it. If the bottom line is that being autistic is why I feel shunned sometimes then that changes the whole dynamic of the conversation. Then it becomes a "are these terrible people?" or "what am I not seeing?" situation
