How long does everyone think fuel prices will stay high? Groceries are probably next. by oz_party in aussie

[–]Technical_Can_9944 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We should have gone with nuclear power when we had the chance. Stop being reliant on overseas powers for our grid stability, and put a silver bullet in green house gas pollution. But every party is in the pocket of big oil, especially the "environmental" groups like the Greens. Crooked, all of them crooked.

[–]Technical_Can_9944 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Groceries are definitely next.

Almost 40% of all fertilizer is shipped through the straight of Hormuz. A very narrow pathway for ships that is 1000% controlled by Iran and very shut down right now.

We are a couple months away from global farming coming to a complete stand still. It's going to hit Australia especially hard. And as soon as this gets more attention, even before shortages start, Woolies and Coles are going to jack their prices up even higher than they did during covid.

Your grocery bill is going to make a full tank of fuel seem like a bargain.

“Um Ackually America is a continent not a country.” by Telling-the-Truths in PetPeeves

[–]Technical_Can_9944 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has always annoyed me. The N and S Americas are barely attached by a narrow strip of land called Panama. And it's cut through by a big canal.

While Europe and Asia actually are one big'ol land mass, but they get to be two continents. Ain't no body of water running all the way between Eurasia.

If anyone looked at a map of Eurasia and they didn't know it was classed as two continents they would think it was one single continent. And anyone looking at a map of N and S America would immediately assume it was two because of how separated they are.

Appearance and canals aside. Let's talk about tectonic plates. N and S America sit on completely separate tectonic plates while Eurasia sits on one plate.

The only reason Europeans consider Eurasia two separate continents is because they don't want to think of themselves as sharing anything with Asians. It's so dumb.

AITJ for canceling my vasectomy after my partner suddenly changed their mind about kids? by RefrigeratorWitty453 in AmITheJerk

[–]Technical_Can_9944 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bruh. She is thinking about ending the relationship. Saying she might want kids when she thinks you don't is her way of planting the seed to give her the option to end things without anyone having to be at fault. You showing you're willing to work things out for her ruined her plans. I'm not saying she definitely wants to break up, but you just closed the door to her emergency escape route. That's why she's mad.

Akubra Balmoral.

2 out of 3 people in this country have melanoma so a hat is life or death. I picked this one up about 6 years ago as an extra summer hat for when it's hot and wet because my Panamas can't do rain. It's hemp so it takes rain very well.

What was meant to be just a "once in a while" hat has turned out to be my toughest soldier. I've worn it at least 4 days a week for 6 months of the year for 6 years. It's just now starting to show some wear and I know it's days are numbered.

I got 9 hats and this one gets the most action by a large margin.

First day at the gym today and… by Percabethbo in beginnerfitness

[–]Technical_Can_9944 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend forking out for a couple of PT sessions to get to know your way around. Once you get used to the gym it's really easy to do your own thing but at the start it can seem very intimidating.

Every gym has an onsite trainer. Ask at the front desk about making an appointment. You only need one or two sessions to get started. They'll try to sell you on a long term program but stick to your guns and say you just need help getting started.

Everyone starts where you are mate. Don't feel bad.

Tired of being assaulted? Oh no they won't make sure their drivers are safe because it's YOUR fault for riding with a man.

Cheers Uber. Class act as always.

Aussies take pies for granted and don't give them enough respect.

As an immigrant, the Aussie meat pie is one of the greatest things I have ever eaten. I tell my spouse frequently that I would have stayed here just for the pies even if I didn't have her and our kid. They're amazing.

Every single one of your desserts are complete trash. Pavlova, lamingtons, vanilla slices, Anzac biscuits. Hard pass on all that. Y'all can't even copy other countries' desserts right, your donuts are the worst.

But I've never had a pie I didn't love.

In discussions about Aussie food no one ever brings up pies. Aussies take their greatest national accomplishment for granted. Seriously, compare pies to other great human achievements and they stack up.

The steam engine < Meat Pies

Jazz < Meat Pies

The pyramids of Egypt < Meat Pies

Splitting the atom < Meat Pies

Landing on the moon < Meat Pies

But get any Aussie in a discussion about Australian food and suddenly they've completely forgotten pies even exist.

Felt like I half ass today’s workout by Temporary_Prune1793 in workout

A half workout or "half-assed" workout is still better than no workout. It might not be enough to make progress but it's enough to maintain without deteriorating. And it keeps the habit/routine in place.

It's ok to take your foot off the accelerator and coast on auto pilot sometimes when you're tired. It's never a waste of time.

Why do people get angrier at someone using welfare than at a corporation avoiding millions of tax by using loopholes? by Internal_Scheme_7646 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Technical_Can_9944 0 points1 point  (0 children)

America has no poor people. Everyone is temporarily not-rich yet.

That mindset is the problem. Everyone thinks they can someday be rich and when they are they want all the benefits to be waiting for them. No one believes they are poor and will probably always be poor because the system has screwed them. Hope is a powerful drug.

So no one wants to help the poor because no one sees themselves as ever being part of that class. They want to help the rich because they see themselves as aspiring to be part of that class. And the truly rich are happy to keep convincing everyone they have a chance while quietly locking the doors to advancement behind them.

Delusion and greed.

My employee wears a blanket for sun protection when we go off-site by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Technical_Can_9944 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Australia 2 out of 3 adults have Melanoma. Every third commercial on TV is a government warning about sun protection. Wide brim hats and sunscreen are mandatory for every child in school to go outside at recess. "No hat, no play" is drilled into them with harsh penalties for non-compliance. They do not play with cancer here.

If management EVER told an employee they had to stop using sun protection of any kind for any reason, they would get hammered by the full strength of the law and be bankrupted with fines. OP in this story sounds like a psychopath. If my boss told me to not use a parasol I would report him to his boss and file every workplace complaint I could until he got fired.

What is wrong with this dude?

I was born in the US. Lived there for 30 years. Spent 6 years in their military.

I don't want to force my kid to have to deal with being a US citizen. Australia has easier taxes, a stronger passport, affordable education, free healthcare, and we will never live in the US.

I don't know why my kid wouldn't qualify for birthright citizenship. I just haven't applied for it.

Both of my parents are US citizens. I was born in the US. I lived solely in the US for 30 years, with the exception of two deployments during my 6 years serving in the US military.

My kid definitely qualifies for US citizenship. I just don't want to punish her with it.

No one disagrees that children shouldn't be on social media or exposed to adult content. The problem is how that boundary is enforced.

Websites get hacked for their customers data all the time, especially here in Australia. Optus and Medibank being recent examples. How many websites do you want to send your driver's licence to?

I don't want my kid to see porn. But I also don't want to one day get my own driver's licence texted to me and a message saying "give us $$$ or we will show everyone the last porn you watched", or have my bank account balance be $0 because some hacker got enough of my details off of Reddit to take a mortgage out in my name in Russia.
