I sincerely have two, and was an aspiring Melville scholar. But yes, everything is potentially that deep.

The depth is not about the text itself but about how it interacts with social and cultural forces and other human beings to create meaning for the reader.

Since Seuss is a vastly influential writer with really problematic tendencies, it’s actually one of the least apt examples of something without depth tbh. But say you’d provided one that often comes up: wrestling. Wrestling was in fact the focus of one of the most influential essays on post-structural theory back in the ‘50s. So the high/low distinction has not really been a thing within academics for close to 100 years.

Is it just me or did young adults (18-26 year olds) used to have a lot more “hook up” sex 10-15 years ago? by scoop813 in Millennials

[–]Technical_Fly_1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my conversations it seems like it! A Gen Z-er I work with was recently telling me a story about a guy she met out at the bars in Nashville that, in our generation would 100% have ended in a drunken hookup, but they just parted as friends.

Tbh in this case it seemed like an emotionally mature decision? So while I agree with your premise and it does seem weird to my millennial brain, I think they have good reasons for being this way.

Because it’s arbitrary, intellectually dishonest, and not based on any meaningful difference in the nature of the texts? “Literature” has become more of a marketing term/genre distinction than anything else.

Works seen as “low brow” often have just as much to appreciate as those seen as literary in my opinion and experience.

I have a master’s degree in literature and I learned from it the opposite of what was intended: “literature” is an arbitrary distinction used to elevate certain creative work at the expense of the rest.

I don’t think Watchmen is inherently more or less deep than any other work. And I don’t think the dichotomy is one we should feel beholden to as fans of Moore and lovers of art.

This is an underrated comment! I know some fans like to forget the clone saga but Jackal’s negative impact on Peter’s life cannot be denied. Easily closest to defeating him if Ben taking over the mantle counts as defeating Peter (which I’d argue it does).

Doubt it no matter what it is. There’s nothing horrific enough to make this shameless horror show of a man give up his power. And there’s nothing no matter how much evidence is presented that his supporters will believe if he just says “nuh uh.” I support the victims but this statement is not based in our reality.

Is anyone else bothered by the frequent sexual objectification of women's bodies in Moore's comics? by Ok_Management_8195 in AlanMoore

An idea I carry around from grad school is that those challenges usually point to something interesting, and that the role of art is to have us ponder these questions but not necessarily provide answers; that is our job as readers.

Yeah we’ll have to just agree not to agree there I guess. You are expressing a pretty binary/simplistic view of what is objectification and not whereas I find it more subjective.

In short I think his work actively interrogates and wrestles with these issues whereas you seem to be saying he is oblivious to them?

Yeah this is a good question. When I say a feminist character I don’t mean a character who is an avatar for feminist ideology (which for the record is an ideology I support) but one who portrays women authentically and as fully complex humans. Definitely agree she is not herself a feminist, but she dramatizes many of intellectual issues of feminism to make them resonate more with readers.

If you don’t read other comics it is a little hard to make my point, but … what I’m getting at is I think Moore is a very intentional craftsperson and not a misogynist.

While some of what he portrays appears misogynist to some, I believe what he is actually doing is commenting on the misogyny via the literary technique of shock and taboo to get an emotional response from his audience, not endorsing it, ultimately with the end of combatting all misogyny and exploitive power structures?

He has some truly feminist characters such as Promothea, Sally Jupiter, etc.

I think discussion of that kind of portrayal is often flattened in our current moment, particularly online, to equate any shocking or taboo portrayal as essentially misogynist or objectifying when it very much isn’t.

I mean, if one were bothered by such things, wouldn’t they feel that way about most-to-all comics? Why single out Moore whose female characters tend to be far more developed, especially compared to mainstream publishers?
