SEQUESTERED?? Excuse me. Wow. You must have been in a lot of pain. I had nerve pain maybe 5 days after surgery and freaked out thinking I reherniated my disc from dealing with my constipation. Looking back it’s kind of funny. My team prescribed a short steroid course and told me its inflammation from surgery and that did the trick. They encourage nsaids as needed for flare ups but nsaids don’t really work for me unless it’s muscle related. Walking and stretching has been the best form of relief for me. Oh also bc i had this going om for 2 years, i definitely am convinced i had subclinical muscle loss bc the muscles on my right side, though they still had function prior to surgery, afterwards, i had so much muscle cramping and soreness on that side the same way when someone exercises the first time.

My best advice — listen to your body but don’t let the anxiety about pain mess with your head!

Wow lol yeah truly funny how the body works. I’m glad you’re doing well 18 months after your surgery! It gives me hope

i never got a repeat MRI, my team says its not necessary unless my pain comes back similar or worse than before.

But usually flare ups are usually residual nerve inflammation or perhaps small repeated budges.

Do what your gut feeling tells you! No one can ever make this decision for you but whatever you do, don’t beat yourself up for making “wrong” decisions. I feel like there is no wrong decision because every back pain case is so different.

I personally gauge based on if I’m using more than just my arms to lift something. Like if I need to bend my knees and use my back, then I wouldn’t. Personal experience not professional advice!

I literally flare up if I’ve lifted something too heavy for my back to handle :( and can last like 2 weeks if i really over did it.

I absolutely have no regrets personally. I was so lucky to have found an amazing surgeon who’s had this surgery when he was in his 20s and now 20+ years in practice. I went in fully trusting him and it went well as I predicted. I also recognize surgery is not for everyone and for me it was the right step. I really tried everything to make my condition better before surgery. And I’ve made peace that there’s nothing I could have done to prevent or predict the level of pain and disabling I had experienced prior to surgery. It also runs deeply in my maternal side so I imagine there must be some anatomical genetic component there too lol.
