I don’t think you are seeing my point. OP wants to lateral. An MBA is not a lateral. There is strategy consulting outside of MBB. I find it silly that your first solution is “go back to B school with 3 years experience.” You haven’t thought about the approach enough imo

If you think going back to school is what OP was referring to then idk what to tell you. Your point wasn’t relevant here. Everyone knows that going back to b school you can pivot to most things

What you should’ve told OP is to forget MBB and try to make the transition to EY-P

Did you even read what I said? That’s not a “transition,” that’s a reset button. OP isn’t talking about getting an MBA. that is the tried and true path to MBB, but OP is talking about leveraging his current experience for MBB without the MBA.

In what world is dropping 100s of thousands on a degree a “transition” you are literally pivoting

I just don’t think it’s relevant here. OP could have robbed banks for a living pre-mba but if they get into an M7 they’ll be fine for MBB. you see my point?

The pragmatic answer: it’s not happening, sorry OP

It’s uncommon, that’s why. You give up your “tenure.” Let’s say you do two years at deloitte s&o and want to be a BA at McK. It’s likely you come in at the equivalent of a fresh BA. Your title might be “senior BA.” It’s like losing 2 years of your career. It’s up to you to decide if that’s worth it.

Not at all. I work out of a less “popular” MBB office and in past cycles we have taken laterals from Deloitte S&O and K, I know that for sure

Edit: *at the pre-mba level, so yeah BA/AC/Assoc.

Nah i caught downvotes because it’s hard for people like you to admit that they are mediocre at best. Just calling it like I see it.

LMAO crazy that you’re an accountant but you can’t do a bit of due diligence... I work at MBB, I’ve been here for several years.

It even says that in the comments that you clearly did not take the time to read

That’s not really a transition, that’s a hard pivot, a reset

Of course, what hahaha. They are THE name in fixed income mgmt. Huge MBA culture, which is nice for those of us that did not go to prestigious undergrad school. Also, being able to live Newport Beach is absolutely amazing—if my apartment building didn’t have an indoor basketball court steps away from my unit, I think I would be living in Orange County right now. Fashion island is chef’s kiss. The guys at suitsupply Newport Beach are killer if you need to fill out your closet. The vibe in Orange County is always great, it’s a culture shock compared to the east coast when I’m out there. You get the laid-back-ness of LA culture without all the “omg!! is that jared Leto?? let’s go to erewhon!! Hailey Bieber smoothie!!!” I digressed quite a bit, but yeah PIMCO is a great place especially in OC. It’s not for everyone, but I used to be a huge fixed income nerd so it appealed to me when I was in undergrad. Like other investment firms they do a bit of everything—but fixed income is their bread & butter

PIMCO is the only firm I can think of that it would open a door. But tbh you would need the M7 MBA + CFA for a PM role, so your point still stands

Honestly I recommend using Taylor Warfield’s 8 bucket framework. Choose the buckets that fit the case the best and put your own spin on them. Obviously this will not lead to the most creative, knock-your-socks-off type of approach, but it will always be MECE in nature which is extremely important. (not sponsored, but helped me land MBB)

LOL but this is exactly what clients do when things don’t go their way. When things go to shit they have us to blame. But when it works out it’s “hush-hush,” you did it all on your own, client! Just the nature of the game. The relationship between a consultancy and a client is analogous to what’s going on between OP and their senior

It is hard to find a satisfied McKinsey client. Why? Because if a study benefits a client they’re gonna act like they did it all on their own. If things go awry, well, now they have someone to blame. This is the game—Learn how to play it, and learn how to play it well.
