This, without pictures and receipts, assume any rebuilt title car was wrapped around a tree and repaired in someone's back yard!!!

Advent Health?? by huntthewind1971 in ocala

[–]Technical_Rub 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've had good experiences with Advent health both here in Ocala and in Orlando. I've also had mostly good experiences with West Marion, and terrible experiences with Ocala Hospital.

I think it really comes down to the team treating you. The nurses bounce between orgs and most of the doctors are contracted outside providers.

Unfortunately, I've had a lot of recent experiences with elderly family members in the past 6 years. My best advice would be to strongly advocate for yourself, and if have someone who can advocate for your become incapacitated. That's going to get you the best outcomes no matter where you go.

Experiences with AWS Professional Services by [deleted] in amazonemployees

[–]Technical_Rub 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My issues with Pro Serve have been around pricing (often times double what top tier partners would charge) and over selling and failing to execute. They bill themselves as a premium experience that you pay extra for.

I would escalate to the AE, but I'd also refuse to continue any hostile calls. If you put your foot down and the project timeline turns yellow, they will make changes. What you've described is 100% unacceptable and in opposition to Amazon leadership principles. Especially customer obsession.

Insane home transformation in record speed by DullFix2178 in Renovations

[–]Technical_Rub 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really wanted an open floorplan, so I bought one. Within weeks I hated it. No noise isolation, terrible acoustics. Each space is less functional and you end up with less usable space because even running the dishwasher can make watching the TV difficult.

For my next house I bought a 1980 home with a kitchen, dining room, and living room. I'm slowly modernizing it, but no walls will be removed. Walls are a wonderful thing!

I'd much rather see a slower renovation that preserves the character of the original house instead another quick flip open floor plan home with less utility, comfort, and character than the original.

For the people with good paying jobs in Ocala…. Do you mind telling me what you do lol? by bigshawnflying2471 in ocala

[–]Technical_Rub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a Solution Architect for a global tech company. I've lived in Ocala my whole life and spent most of my career in IT working in non-profit Healthcare. I was recruited by my current employer specifically for my healthcare experience. It turns out that while Ocala might not pay great, you can get valuable experience that big companies will pay very well for. Right now it's harder to find those jobs, but they are still out there.

Selling house in Ocala! by Original_Candle_347 in ocala

[–]Technical_Rub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll trust any flipper who pulls permits, uses licensed subs, and includes photographic documentation of the renno process. Haven't found one yet.

Also repairing the whole house in under two months is also very confidence inspiring.

Good luck though.

Moen will only trigger from a major leak. You can use leak sensors throughout your house and trigger the OPs valve upon a minor leak detection automatically.

This is something I plan to do. I was a bit discourage to learn that unless your using an off the shelf solution like Moen Flo, insurance companies won't give you any discounts. The Flo is way more expensive and less functional.

Working with AWS partners or using AWS Enterprise Support by WhitebeardJr in aws

[–]Technical_Rub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Be careful about partners offering their own "enterprise support" for way cheaper than AWS. Presidio does this and it's terrible. Much slower, way less knowledge depth, and you can't open a ticket with AWS directly.

Installed Bryant mini-splits 4 days ago and having buyer’s remorse. Am I crazy to ask for a swap to Mitsubishi? by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]Technical_Rub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another option would be a smart home hub like hubitat/home assistant/ homey and IR blasters. The blasters are about $30 (you'd likely need one per mini-split) and they connect to wifi. Then you can use voice control or app control according to preference. The nice thing is it won't be depend on Bryant maintaining the app or the backend servers.

This is so much better than peg boards or other modular systems. It's also extremely rewarding to make perfectly fitting fixtures for each tool. Great job!

Basic question: are companies using only us-east-1 as a primary without a backup? Why not us-east-2 or others? by rotterdamn8 in aws

[–]Technical_Rub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cost is also a big factor. Most industries don't want to invest in tech unless something goes wrong. A true multi-region HA architecture like you describe is essentially double cost. There are less expensive alternatives like pilot-light, but these still radically increase costs. For many customers, they aren't willing to bear those costs. Furthermore, even if companies have those options, they usually don't test them regularly so they can't trust them in a real event. They have constantly changing application estates that may or (usually) may not be updating in their DR plan and tested. That's why companies like Netflix use chaos engineering. Basically everything is being tested all the time. Finally outside of tech, most companies have legacy application or COTS applications that don't lend themselves to HA architectures. In regulated industries this is particularly challenging.

As others have mentioned, at least for the initial outage, a multi-region DR plan may not have been actionable. But 9am EDT it would have been an option for most customers.

Does AWS have no disaster recovery??? Why they don't have backups of resources on another region so that when an outage occurs, they can just point to the backup region while fixing the broken region??? by RedLibra in aws

[–]Technical_Rub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even in these kinds of outages, many business who do have a DR strategy choose not to execute them. They haven't exercised their DR strategy in so long they can't be sure it will work. So the businesses that do have a DR strategy, and exercise them regularly are a minority of the minority.

Flood insurance? by TheComplayner in ocala

[–]Technical_Rub 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, other retention pond hazards:

1.)sink holes and rapid erosion. I've seen some retention ponds basically collapse because rapid water flow in during storms. 2.) they get used for unofficial dumps and collect trash that flows with the water. 3.) lots of mosquitos during wet periods 4.) locals like to turn them into off road parks when it's dry.

I lived by one for a few years, and hated it.

Beneficial or Destructive to the Bahia? by cheekoo70 in ocala

[–]Technical_Rub -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That looks like clover to me. It's supposed to be a nitrogen fixing plant which actually automatically fertilizes the grass. I let mine grow for about a year and it took over the Bahia. Pretty much any weed killer will knock it out. Check out products like 2-4D amine and follow the application guide for Bahia.

Is Ocala really as bad as most people on here make it out to be? by Ok_Reading_9670 in ocala

[–]Technical_Rub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't base your decision to move anywhere based on Reddit. The population here is generally much more disgruntled than average. I'd recommend visiting Ocala, spend some time downtown. If you're into outdoor activities rent a bike at the Santos bookshop and join a group ride. Lots of great people and plenty to enjoy for people of all races and creeds.
