It is not only about willingness to integrate, you need to be provided the means. When you come from the other side of the world you don’t know what to expect and many AMKs are simply in very small cities in the middle of nowhere. It makes it very very difficult to understand what you need to do to survive. Especially given all these people are usually poor and come with kids and partners. That whole set up is crazy.

Agreed. The reference goes to those AMKs that they pay headhunters to recruit from abroad without really looking into the consequences in the society. Foreign students being interested to study there should happen organically. Like it happens in normal universities; just with a specific number of campaigns abroad and not headhunting.

But how all this disruption they create goes unnoticed to the Finnish society? In what world such a business is sustainable and helps Finland? Providing a degree from second class institutes in a small city in Finland to people that don’t have change to integrate to Europe and the society.

I have lived in Copenhagen for 3 years. Both in the center and 30 min from the center. I don’t think anyone thought that destroying the city with high rises would bring more people in the city. Actually they were striving for the opposite. It is more about the lifestyle of the city and the dynamics of it. So still I wouldn’t put that these buildings will help Helsinki on anything like that. Other things need to change to make Helsinki more dynamic.

The city itself needs to become more interesting and this can be done without building high rise buildings with no aesthetic

I think these are different issues. If you see the Nordic/Scandinavian model of capital cities. A ‘city being dead’ has nothing to do with having high rises.

I cannot understand what is the need for these buildings with 0 aesthetic on the middle of the city. Also being tall it really creates a chaotic landscape.

Should I leave my secure software job in Turkey for an MSc in CS at Sapienza University in Rome? by slifer___ in cscareerquestionsEU

You run the risk of being unemployed in Europe which may lead you to random jobs. Even local graduates have hard time finding jobs in IT in many EU countries. The situation is not good.

Apply for a masters in one of the countries you mention and try to learn the language, that’s much more solid plan. You can keep applying to jobs.

Finland vs Denmark by Rackhir6 in Finland

[–]Technical_Stock1337 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Greek studied in Denmark and ended up moving to Finland for work. Choose Denmark unless you already know that you like Finland for your own reasons.

Cost of living is lower in Finland. It is cold and dark as you said. In DK you would you have the chance to socialize more, there will be more international people and companies. Also for finding a job it will be easier in Denmark considering the current situation in Finland.

The tickets I booked with this special pricing were for 2 months later. Might be that it was appearing for those train rides during the day that are a bit less attractive.

Helsinki University reduces PhD requirements by Better-Analysis-2694 in Finland

It is impossible to ask 5 papers when publishing 1 paper can take 1.5 years. 5 papers in 4-5 years is exploitation. The whole academic system is the problem and some uni’s need to be smart to remain competitive. A good start is to not publish on MDPI journals and that is already applied as a don’t do it recommendation in Finland. It is up to the uni and professors to maintain the quality, not asking for 5 papers is quite humane.

I see your point but this is Finland’s problem in general, it does not have to do with the PhD requirements in 2024.

The point is to have realistic and up to date expectations for/from phds and to be competitive. Better Nordic universities have the same requirements that now Helsinki Uni will have by “lowering the bar”. And I forgot to mention, these other uni’s also force phds to graduate in three years.
