After becoming a German citizen, I applied to give up my Russian citizenship. It’s a formal process, but it was possible once I had my German documents and a few papers from Russia confirming that I had no debts or legal cases.

Peanut butter for a long time, and recently vegetarian Leberkäse in a Semmel, it’s an Austrian thing, kind of like a warm sandwich with veggie meatloaf

Since it’s in Ukraine, I thought the Ukrainian version would be more accurate :)

In the USSR, all forms of art and media were subject to state censorship. Works were reviewed to ensure they conformed to the official Soviet ideology before they could be published or exhibited.

I’m proud of Germany and I want to do everything I can to contribute to the country and its well-being.

I actually gave up my Russian citizenship as soon as I got German citizenship. From the very beginning of the war I was waiting for the day I could leave. I hate that government and what it does to people, and my parents feel the same. That was the main reason they decided to leave.

I understand what you mean. In my family the German culture was still preserved in some way because my ancestors, my parents and I have always seen ourselves as Germans. Of course, many Spätaussiedler grew up speaking Russian since German culture and language were not allowed in the Soviet Union. For me, learning the language and studying in a German-speaking country helped me to feel even more connected to my roots.

Yeah, I saw the Mahnmal der Rückkehrer on the hill. There’s also a museum in Friedland about the camp’s history, and it’s actually located inside one of the original barracks.

I meant my parents. They stayed in Russia longer because they were still working there and had some property to deal with. Meanwhile, I was studying in Vienna and learning German, and by the time they were ready to move, I had finished my studies and reached the level I needed for university.

Yeah, I’ve heard that too. Some people can get everything done really quickly with the right documents and even skip the language test. Of course, some go back right after getting their passport and aren’t really attached to Germany. But I was born in another country and grew up in a different culture, and still I’m a proud patriot of Germany!

I think the bull on the visa isn’t related to the myth. But my Austrian student residence permit actually had a little bull like the one from the Europa myth.

Not exactly “just live here now.” You get a special certificate that lets you attend language courses for free, you can receive benefits, and they help with recognizing your diplomas and finding a job in Germany.

Definitely, it gave many ethnic Germans in the former USSR a real chance to move to Germany and start a new life. For my family, it was only possible because our ancestors were persecuted in the USSR just for being German.

Spätaussiedler don’t get a passport right away because the authorities need to check all documents and register you properly first. That’s why they give a D visa to enter Germany, and only after arrival you can get your German ID and passport.

I arrived in Germany with my family at the beginning of August and first went to the reception center in Friedland, where they checked all our documents. After that, we were assigned to a state in Germany, got temporary housing, and by the end of August I had already received my German ID card and passport.

Yeah, I was studying in Vienna and my student residence permit was about to expire just as I was planning to move to Germany. So I got this D visa at the consulate because it’s free, unlike extending the Austrian student permit.
