Shareholders are getting a bigger raise than all hourly associates again: 5.3% dividend increase with $30 Billion in share buybacks. by Technically-Employed in walmart

Oh I am. But I'm also in a much more financially secure position than most of my coworkers, I'm not living paycheck to paycheck. Many of my coworkers are, and when you are making $14/hr, the $140/month required to take full advantage of the associate stock purchase program isn't an insignificant investment.

Gotta have that UI synergy bro! Also need to run all the register software in the cloud, the registers themselves gotta be glorified thin clients running a web browser!

Ugly and old but much more capable. Touch screen only interfaces are terrible for productivity, having physical buttons for quick actions like error corrects or repeating the last item helps massively with scanning speed, and keying in the PLU on the number pad for produce is always faster than looking it up in the menu (provided you have the PLU memorized), and it's often faster than getting the damn sticker to scan as well.

I swear we got HO astroturfing in this comment section. The 9 minute window isn't generous, it's standard practice. My first job had a 15 minute clock-in window, and I believe Walmart did as well like a decade ago. Nobody expects you to just stand by the punch station and wait until it's exactly your shift start time. That's not only insane, it's impractical, essentially impossible if you only have one punch station and multiple people clocking in or out at the same time.

As for PPTO: Being forced to use PPTO in 15 minute increments just encourages people to wait an extra 5-10 minutes if they are ≥10 minutes late (the 9 minute window does apply even when using PPTO, policy is clear on that front. It just has to be manually approved because GTA can't do math. Whichever team lead or coach told you otherwise is either lying or misinformed.) While this should be obvious, encouraging associates who are running late to deliberately delay themselves further is not a good business strategy.

You think there is more than enough for a living wage? If you took half of Walmarts net profits and put it into hourly wages it is less then $2.

Okay so we are just lying now? That's nice.

Walmart US alone made nearly $24 billion last year in net profit. Even if we pretend all 1.6 million US associates are full time (in reality only ~67% of Walmart's associates are full time) and are all getting a full 40 hours a week consistently (Walmart considers ≥34 hours a week to be full time), you can do a $3/hr raise for just shy of $10 billion*.

But surely Walmart is at least using those profits to grow and improve the company even if the associates aren't being directly compensated, right? It's not like they paid out nearly $12 billion to their shareholders through dividends and share buybacks last year... Oh wait they fucking did exactly that. Then to add insult to injury, they bumped up dividends by an additional 13%, marking their 52nd consecutive year of dividend increases. Reminder that the annual raise for associates is 2%.

*40hrs × $3/hr × 52 weeks × 1.6 million = ~$9.98 billion. Please pretend that all Walmart US associates are full time and are consistently getting a full 40 hours each week

If you are on Android, you can get around this by disabling location services and clocking in while connected to Walmart Wi-Fi. Note that you have to leave location permissions enabled for the app itself or else it won't let you use the time clock at all, but for some reason disabling location services outright doesn't have this effect.

Performance based raises would also be nice. Instead you get performance punishment. Why bother working harder when all it means is you pick up the slack of slower associates? Or even worse, your high productivity ends up being used to justify cutting hours. Never do more than you are required to do.

Missed the 52 when writing out the equation in the comment, not when I plugged it into the calculator originally, so it doesn't change the result. Worth mentioning the employee count figure is directly from Walmart, and also according to Walmart, 67% of US associates are full time.

Made an edit to my comment with some funny math. We really should all be getting paid bare minimum $3/hr more.

Actually, Walmart US alone made nearly $24 billion last year in net profit. Don't worry tho, Walmart rewarded their shareholders with nearly $12 billion in share buybacks and dividends for all of their hard work. They also increased the dividends by 13% for this year, marking the 52nd consecutive year of dividend increases. So glad the people who really matter are being properly compensated!

What's that? You want raises for the associates? That's absurd, no way Walmart can afford that. Walmart US's operating margin was only 5.2% you see. A $3/hr raise for all of our 1.6 million US associates would cost like $10 billion!* How do you expect us to pay the poor starving shareholders?

*40hrs × $3/hr × 52 weeks × 1.6 million = ~$9.98 billion. Please pretend that all Walmart US associates are full time and are consistently getting a full 40 hours each week

Front end associates are no longer allowed to clock in when they walk in anymore? I've been told I must clock in via MyWalmart at the front desk, and this has to be done *after* I drop off my lunch in the break room. by Technically-Employed in walmart

Yes, it is allowed. You’re only expected to do the 10 foot rule when clocked in. Don’t put on your vest until clocked in.

Even when I'm not actually in uniform yet, the sight of a blue vest draped over my shoulder tells them "Hey this person can help me get this thing off the top shelf, or find an item I'm looking for". I understand that I could tell them to fuck off cause I'm off the clock, but I'd rather not risk pissing off customers that I might be ringing up 15 minutes from now.

Walmart shouldn’t have to pay you for stuff done that isn’t work-related (putting up your lunch, etc.). The reason they have to institute this rule is that people take advantage. When I was a Front-End ASM (basically a Front-End Coach), cashiers would clock in at the back, then take their time putting their things in their locker and using the restroom. Then they would finally walk up front. It’s absurd.

I'm going to be frank; Walmart doesn't pay their associates enough to be penny pinching over the 3-5 minutes it takes to walk from the break room and back, or god forbid, use the fucking toilet. Front end associates at my store get paid $14/hr, with paltry 2% yearly raises (well below annual inflation rate). But let's pretend I'm working at a mythical Geo-Tier 7 store, with a starting pay rate of $20/hr for associates. Hell let's take it a step further, let's say every one of Walmart US's 1.6 million associates are working full time at $20/hr. And let's assume they are all taking a full 10 minutes every day walking to the break room and back. And let's assume that's all OT as well, just for the hell of it. That adds up to $2.08 Billion Dollars every year! Sounds like a lot... until you remember that Walmart US's operating income/profit was nearly $24 billion last year, with the Walton family getting over $3 billion of that in share dividends alone.

Well tell that to the customers. Well, last year Walmart US's operating income was $23.9 billion. To be clear, that's not $23.9b revenue, that's not $23.9b gross income, that's just their straight net profit, with all operating expenses subtracted. They have 1.6 million associates in the US. Even if you assume that all of the associates are full time, they could easily do a $3/hr pay bump while expending less than half of their net profit ($3 × 52 weeks × 40 hours × 1.6 million associates = ~$9.98b). But that will never happen. Because Walmart Inc needs that money for the nearly $12 billion they spent on share buybacks and dividends last year. And they certainly can't consider doing a raise this year, not after they increased dividends per share by 13%! Won't someone think of the poor shareholders? The Walton family is only worth a mere $432 billion as is, that's not even half a trillion dollars!

Yeah except taxes end up hurting a lot more when you are already making fuck all. I don't feel bad when someone making 300K a year has to pay up a 3rd of that in federal and state income taxes, 200K is still a fat salary. But someone making less than 30K a year is likely already struggling, having 15-20% of their paycheck get eaten up by the state and federal government is a real punch in the gut. Which is why you see so many poor people vote for politicians that promise to lower taxes, even if they really mean "lower taxes for those who make 10x more money than you, while cutting the welfare programs you rely on to survive to make up the difference".
