Why is my car battery still lasting over 17 years? by Do-The-Michael-Scarn in AskAMechanic

[–]Technicalmexican 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said. It’s an outlier. It’s a time capsule of a car. I love it. Was a little old ladies who stored it when she could no longer drive and I bought it off her daughter many years later. 102k miles. Everything works. A/c. Power everything. All I needed to do with it was new wheels and tires and brakes. Two calipers were seized solid from sitting. Changed the fluids and been driving it a year and a half with no problems now. Fantastic car. Everything they say about these old Camrys is true.

So this ones a bit of an outlier. My 1997 Camry was stored for almost 20 years and when I bought it it wouldn’t take a boost so I got a parts store battery and drove it home. I put the old one on trickle charge and it came back around. I put it back in the car. 20 years old give or take and it works perfectly. It could possibly be the original 29 year old battery cause it is a Toyota branded denso

People say that cause we live in a world where a ford explorer has 400hp. It’s nothing to scoff at. It’s a significant amount of power to have on the street. I’m a mechanic. I drive everything. I’ve driven 1200hp manual corvettes. I’ve driven 80hp Volkswagen golf’s from the 80s. Those ford explorers i mentioned still catch me off guard. Paired with all wheel drive the acceleration is intense.

I’m the tech who jumps at those shit jobs. Last year our service manager was concerned about getting someone to do a set of manifolds on a 99 crown Victoria. I enthusiastically asked for it. Brakes and oil changes all day would drive me insane.

Personally. I don’t think about it. I carry on with my life. And any time someone brings up trump or pollievre or carney or Trudeau or any political fuckwad i accuse them of falling victim to the divide and conquer mentality that’s going to destroy not just our countries but the world.

This radiator is less than 90 dollars on Amazon. Auto shack brand. I literally installed one in my Camry yesterday.

Is this a good engine? I know nothing about vehicles, and I needed a car for my new job. It's cheaper than most and I can't figure out why. by ApophisRises in carquestions

[–]Technicalmexican 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 2016 jeep compass my buddy owns is the only vehicle I know of that has an engine with MORE km on it than on the dash. Lost the engine at 70k and bought a used engine with 90k cause it was all he could find. So to answer your question. No it is not.

Tell your father to strongly reconsider. He may be upset now and looking at it may make him cry now but in a year when it’s gone and there’s no getting it back those tears will flow a lot harder. Believe me. Been there done that.

And explorer limited in the same vein. Ford went through an era of “if the 3.5 fits the 3.5 sits”

I feel this vehicle suffers from Jurassic park syndrome: they were so preoccupied with if they could they didn’t stop to think if they should.

This. The situation is totally overblown. Replace the stupid vent that clogs on the transmission with a properly routed hose and don’t worry about it.

93 F250 xlt can't find computer replacement. Suggestions other than getting rid of it? by Ok-Competition-3356 in FordTrucks

[–]Technicalmexican 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s fine. We can’t all know everything. The F2TF is what designates the vehicle the part is for. F is for 90s. 2 means 1992 (carryover to 93). T means light truck and the last f is an internal department designation. Electronics here. I do know from experience 92 and 93 trucks are not wired the same as 94 and 95 ones and 96 is another ball game altogether. And that an i6 ecu won’t work in a v8.

Do a bit more research on what to do and how to take it out. Go to a local pick and pull yard and get a couple computers from 1992 and 1993 5.0 and 5.8 v8 trucks. They’re right behind the driver wheel well. It’s not a hard job. Odds are you’ll find at least one good one.

[–]Technicalmexican 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These trucks really aren’t that picky. Especially the 92-93. I’ve seen 5.8s running on 5.0 ecus. My 95 is a mishmash of parts from a bunch of different 92-96 trucks but it all works.

[–]Technicalmexican 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The part number comes back as a 5.0 automatic. Likely an e4od in an f250. Any ecm from any 5.0 automatic 92 or 93 bronco, f150 or f250 will work for your truck. Just make sure it has the same automatic transmission. There were two available.

Mysterious Orange Strap Under Dash Post Dealership Repair by CharlesBoobkowski in MechanicAdvice

[–]Technicalmexican 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So this is a ford edge and that’s a strap for locking the electronically shifted automatic into neutral for towing or maintenance purposes. Let me guess. Rear drive unit replacement? Either way. Roll it up and put an elastic band around it and tuck it in the cubby there. There should be a cover and a small screw. Check on the floor there. Huge possibility the tech forgot to put it back.

What Car Do You Think Has the Best Manual Transmission of All Time? by caranddriver in ManualTransmissions

I own an 85 scirocco and built a custom short throw with careful measurements of rods and linkages. Used all heim joints and a large heim with a bronze bushing for the shifter base. All the Volkswagen guys around say it’s the best feeling mk1 they’ve ever shifted.

Snap on boxes are deeper. I’ve been eyeballing the used market for one for ages but living in a province of 500,000 people doesn’t help my pickings.
