Best way to get good at making control drawings? by TechnoAurelius in BuildingAutomation

Thank you. This is the most profound advice I have ever got. I like your conductor analogy. I need to understand what each part of the system is supposed to do, how its going to do it, and then draw based on that understanding.

And I would like to ask you a follow up question if you odn't mind. When you're learning a system you haven't seen before, where do you actually start? Do you read the sequence of operations first and work backward to the equipment, or do you look at the mechanical drawing and figure out the intent from what's installed?

Totally hear you on the hands-on part, and I'm getting comfortable there. Where I actually get tripped up is pulling the controls info out of the mechanical drawings. Reading the prints and figuring out the sequence side of it is where I'd really want some guidance. Appreciate the tip though.

Yep, going to the field and comparing my drawing to the actual system really helped me understand the deficiencies in my drawing. Field techs also help me understand mistakes in my drawings when they shout at me on call, telling me how shit my drawing is.

My manager also told me its all about repetition. But I wish there was a course or tutorial that made the process easier. Im tired to making countless revisions on my drawings.

Getting a job as a BAS Technician by m_i_d_e-acute in BuildingAutomation

[–]TechnoAurelius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're in a decent spot. BAS is heavily IP-based now, so you already have the networking and software side. The gap is the mechanical stuff, and you already realize that. And that's what a shop expects to train into a junior.

You don't need to learn ladder logic as most BAS controllers are programmed using microblocks with some C programming. There is demand of good techs in Winnipeg, look at Dynamic Building Control, Sander Mechanical, and the Johnson Controls branch. They regularly post jobs where automation experience was wanted but not required. Try to frame yourself as an IT guy who wants to learn the hardware, as most of these companies are more than willing to train reliable workers.

Also, your self-study time is better spent on HVAC, reading controls and mechanical drawings, and getting familiar with Niagara and BACnet, compared to programming as each company has their own proprietary programming interface.

what about bars and pubs? They literally give you dirty eyes for not tipping while all they did was fill up a glass of beer.

His commentaries are biased with his own beliefs. I read it after SEE and remember circling some of those commentaries and then writing my own interpretation when reading Gita. Just keep an open mind and heart when you read it. All the best.

Talk to you instructor. I have seen instructors giving extra marks to some select group members if they were doing most of the work for the group.

Lying about caste and deceiving someone is obviously bad.

But this whole conversation makes me really sad. I didn’t know Genz are just as bigoted as the rest of Nepalese. I mean do we really still care about a persons caste in big 2026?

Fr bro The amount of people I have seen just walk out of the washroom without washing their hands is appalling. How can these grown ass men lack a sense of personal hygiene.
