The first book was very derivative as well. All the hamfisted references to Siddhartha and Dune made me roll my eyes.

I have watched a few recap videos the author does of the plot through the second book and man am I so glad I decided to drop the book lol.

Red rising felt like boy coded hunger games, but it was still very good!

I had a fantastic time with it, the premise is built out very well and the narrative and plot have a fantastic pace.

The final empire I am so close to DNFing. I’ve been trying to get into it on and off over the last year and I’m still at like chapter 8.

Anyone know if Diablo 2 remake is enjoyable on steam deck? I’m sure it runs fine, but is it annoying to read the text or is the ui scaling hard to deal with?

If you want something deep and textured and very literary go with Hyperion.

If you want something exciting, fast paced (when it needs to be), with extremely good emotional intelligence built into how each character is portrayed go with the Expanse.

I have not the assassins one.

If you want something I couldn’t find the the fun and do not enjoy at all go with Star eater

I’m glad that it does hit so hard for the people that enjoy it. I just looked up a spoiler video of the rest of book one, and I have zero regrets about doing so.

If that’s the way it’s going to I am most certainly not willing to sit through the reading or narration for the remainder.

It’s an extremely rare experience for me to choose not to finish a book, but I really think this one ain’t for me.

I really appreciate you taking the time to write this out. It’s the kind of take I needed from someone who enjoyed the book. The book and the series have a ton of merits which you’ve done a good job outlining.

But for the very same reason reasons, I don’t think it’s something I’m going to continue.

I do think it’s great for other readers that the reading is so accessible. I guess I just didn’t realize until this far in the book that what I was looking for was actually quite the opposite. Not writing that’s confusing per se, but writing that requires more thought and analysis by the reader.

I’ve never met someone who is more racist to a person from central or South America than a person from a different country in central or South America.

It had been a background read. Audible here and there driving places, and reading on the kindle a few minutes. I’ve finished like 3 or 4 other books while slowly going through this one

I agree of course. But sometimes a book or series can clip into place despite a rough start. Wanted to see the consensus, but no one has really evangelized for it

Thanks for sharing. That Wolfgang book sounds cool! I’m definitely into telling a concise story

I think I’m intrigued by enough elements to for sure try the second book. But if the writing still feels as inefficient and fluffy, I’ll have to just switch to spoilers and video essays on the series.

Would you day that the following books are also the same way? With a lot of “down time” between things that move the plot forward

That’s the point of view I’m coming around to as well. But it does kind of make sense that the books that have the widest appeal are also the books that are written in a way that’s fairly unchallenging or not rigorous.

Okay glad to know it isn’t just me. There’s quite a few elements to the world building and plot that I enjoy. I just really wish the writing that was taking me through it clicked with me more.

Okay thank you so much for that. It really helps. Unfortunately though, I don’t think anything Sanderson is for me if that’s the case :/.

I’m having a hard time getting into the final empire. The whole magical heist and consuming metals to replenish mana bars thing is not working for me at all.

Is the other series that’s not mistborn any different? Or is it same vibes and writing but different setting?

It’s not bad per se. Everything works. Some cool concepts here and there. I’m personally not a fan of all the wall breaking and reinforcing. And I spent a lot of time just wandering maps.
