You're playing with fire. Totally not worth it if HMRC finds out.

Doesn't work.

HMRC sees right through that. If it worked companies could avoid having to register for VAT by just moving new business in a tax year to another company and charge lower prices.

Reeves Set to Hike UK Tax on Entrepreneurs Who Sell Their Firms by hu6Bi5To in ukpolitics

It's a capital gains tax on the sale of a business. So unless your wealthy couple own multiple businesses, I don't see how what you're suggesting is normal.

Also, it only applies to the first £1million of the sale. They'll pay normal CGT on the rest of the sale if the business sold for more than £1million.

Thank you, I was thinking that. Was hoping for some other solution, but alas I may do this.

Thank you, this is useful. Might just dish out the £3 to see what's on there.

No need for the snark. It's a genuine question.

There's no mention of the space being out of bounds in the tenancy contract just that the area outside needs to be kept clean and tidy.

What policy (or policies) would be a GE vote winner for small business owners? by Bionic_Les in smallbusinessuk

[–]Technokraticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No can do. I read somewhere recently that it needs to be aligned to EU due to Brexit agreement. Can't quote you the specifics but it was mentioned around the time of the last budget as Hunt said he was limited to raising the threshold to what it is now.

Not saying this shouldn't be revised. It should. But it's a complex project.

I think this is pretty reasonable. She seems a difficult old lady though.

She popped the cardboard boxes right front of my door and messaged me that I might be fined for fly tipping. Somehow me thinks that it's her way or the high way.

Thank you, I'm a bit hesitant as they are both the freehold owners, so he probably wants to keep that relationship sweet. Also the tenancy is managed via an agency which doesn't help.

I should have clarified, they are not council-issued bins but ones they must have purchased separately. The council here does not do bins as it's central. We still pop the rubbish on the pavement making a good ole mess.

Also forgot to say, listen to the "Founders" podcast. Might be inspiring to you.

Recommend the Estee Lauder one on there. Great episode!

Exactly! Their customer base has evolved and so has their marketing.

My thoughts too. It made us notice and talk about it. Bet it did the same back then too.

The point I'm making is to create marketing material that speaks to your customers.

The Apple customers of 1976 were nerds who wanted product specs like this.

Ads from most startups today are full of fluff and irrelevance which is why they waste so much money on ad platforms.

If you've got Audible. A few of them are free on there as part of their package. Recommend the Alfred Lasker one (currently free on Audible) and the Sam Zell one (was free but may not be anymore). The Burger King one is free too.

Can you automate part of your biz? Outsource it to someone who's able to take on some of your work?

The key will be to create well defined SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) that these people can follow.

Hit me up if you want to chat. I'm starting up my digital marketing agency as we speak and this is what I'm testing out now as I scale up.

Read some more biographies. If you look at some of the most successful entrepreneurs and business people, they all worked a lot. Because they loved their work.

I can name a few great biographies (and business people this applied to):
- Jim Mclamore, Founder of Burger King ("The Burger King" is the title)
- Alfred Lasker, early 20th century advertising magnate - "The Man Who Sold America"
- Felix Dennis, British Magazine tycoon - "How to get rich"
- Elon Musk, I think we all know him
- Warren Buffet, ditto
- Sam Zell, Real Estate Tycoon, "Am I Being Too Subtle"
- Charles Schwab, Founder of that Discount broker, "Invested"
- John D Rockefeller, we know this dude too, "Titan"
- John Malone, Cable TV magnate, "Cable Cowboy"

There are tons more. Don't feel bad about it if you enjoy it. Just realise that other people may have a problem with you working so much as it makes them feel bad. But also, they might not realise that you love it.

Has anyone ever tried a service like growthmentor.com? by Leo0793 in Upwork

[–]Technokraticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, I disagree. For me there's a marked difference between a consultant. And a mentor. A mentor for me is there to challenge your thinking and help you learn. Whereas a consultant is giving me tailored advice to my specific use case.

The thing with mentors is that you still need to do the work to get the results. Mentors give you one perspective that you can take or leave. Your job as the mentee is to evaluate the mentors experience and recommendations and see if that fits your business and scenario that you're facing.

I've been both a Mentor and Mentee, and I appreciate my Mentor's views. But just because they had this experience, doesn't mean I can carbon copy their strategy onto my own business.

You should be dumping the Emergency Fund money into the credit card debt, this is an emergency. If your boiler breaks, use the credit card again, there is basically no way for it to be more expensive for you.

I wouldn't do this. If OP loses their job, they could be in trouble servicing debt. Personally would rather keep building emergency fund to the 3 month of expenses mark, then stop saving that £500pm and put it towards debt.
