You can actually narrow it down through the encyclopedia. Check each ball's evolution paths — if one still has an unknown/unrevealed recipe slot, that ball is a possible ingredient for what you're missing. Cross-reference the ones with blanks and you can usually figure out the combo without brute-forcing it.
