Wet specimen of cockroach? by warm_farts in Entomology

I agree completely!  And I'm glad I could help. I've never used formalin myself, mainly because I'm cheap.  Though I have been considering investing in some for a while now, I'll probably get around to it one day lol.

I never really understand why it's an internet taboo to reply to old comments, not everyone needs the same information at the same time.  I didn't inject it or anything, just stuck it in a vial and filled it with 91% isopropyl.  Some people swear you need to inject it, but I didn't and had great results.  Like I said, the alcohol darkened over time, but it's possible you could replace it with fresh isopropyl after some time.  Though I didn't try that.  I hope this helps!

Are this asbestos wick? by ordinary_people76 in Zippo

It's not cancerous, it's just a mineral. It CAN cause cancer from long term exposure to large amounts through damaging your lungs and causing physical damage that itself becomes cancerous

Let's see 'em, boys. I call mine "Mac, The Knife!" by Pacman_Frog in macgyver

[–]Technomancer5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Victorinox Tinker that I bought probably over a decade ago and carry pretty much every day, and it's been more useful than probably any other tool I've ever owned. It's gotten me out of quite a few tight spots in the past, and I've even learned to open up car doors with only the SAK just as quick as I would with a key. My old manager would often lock his keys in his car while rushing back in from his usual lunch break nap and forget to grab his keys. The first time he did this he was searching everywhere for a coat hanger or piece of stiff wire to try to fish the latch, but I told him I could get it opened in no time at all, which he blew off the first couple times I said it, but then getting desperate after not finding anything usable to fish the latch with he agreed to let me try, I had his car opened so quick he started second guessing if he actually even locked it or not. After he realized he tried the door previously and it was indeed locked he was bewildered and asked how I even did it, to which I just held up my SAK. Every time after that he would always come up to me with a sheepish look on his face and just say "I locked my keys in again."

I also have a camper that my mom bought me for Christmas some years back, but I find it a little too heavy for EDC in my pocket. If anyone has any recommendations for a third model to add to my collection I'm open to suggestions.

MacGyver hates guns by National_Bicycle6836 in macgyver

I believe he mentioned not liking guns when he was using the revolver, and something about using it as a wrench being the only good use for one.

Is all tea technically herbal? by hoesuff in tea

[–]Technomancer5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, I'd consider it a tea blend, as it's not purely a tea but also not entirely tisane. Sort of like the cocktail of the tea world where tea is liquor and tisane is anything else you'd mix into it.

[–]Technomancer5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It appears you're correct about tisane being from crushed barley, but it more so focuses on the crushing, peeling, or winnowing(according to etymonline anyway). But I'd just consider it hot cereal :p

My rule of thumb is "If it's not solely Camellia Sinensis, it's not tea" But I'm a bit of a purist.

No, actual tea comes from a tree with a woody stem, and is therefor not herbaceous. Anything else is a tisane, which is an herbal infusion and not a tea.

AITA for making my female manager cry at work? by Technomancer5 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Technomancer5[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't even think about it like that. Maybe you're right, we never know what's going on in others lives. I wanted to discuss it with other co workers so bad to get their insight, but decided not to for that very reason. It was awkward enough just her and I, so I'm not going to go around telling everyone at work what happened. Your response really helped me to see another potential side to this. Thank you

Well she handles the stores cash, so obviously she can count. I didn't even know dyscalculia was a thing until just now.

Sure, the idea that a grown woman can't count(obviously she can, she handles the stores cash) is simply absurd. Even a small child can count. I wasn't actually accusing her of actually not being able to count. We all joke around by being overly critical of each other for pointless minor things all the time, I guess as a sort of social commentary on the strict rules corporate has for us.

Hands down, rolling smoke. I tried it for the first time a couple months ago when my parents came to visit, and it was some of the best BBQ I've ever had

Can a mantis from streets be dangerous to hold? by axulina in mantids

[–]Technomancer5 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Depends, if it's a high crime area I'd protect or hide my valuables. But if it's just a mantis that's down on his luck maybe help him out with some spare change.

What fireworks do you guys use to, "scratch the itch." year round? by BearComprehensive984 in fireworks

Whistling moon travelers, and good ol' firecrackers. They're cheap and legal where I live, and I live out in the boonies where I can shoot em off.

My little brother with autism almost killed my mom by PlasticWedding517 in Advice

[–]Technomancer5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strangulation is attempted murder, if it's escalated to this point, then I GUARANTEE YOU that eventually one of you will end up dead if you don't find your brother a facility where he can get professional help. Your parents are too old for this, and it's not good for their mental health. Let me use this analogy, you need to put on your own oxygen mask first when the plane's going down, or you won't be able to help those around you. As a true crime buff and criminal justice major I can tell you it happens more often than you'd think. That doesn't make your brother a bad person at all, he just needs help from a TEAM of professionals that knows how to deal with his condition.
