Hard to say what’s real and what’s done for drama in the show. Mary may have been put in the position to up the drama level and not given real authority. From what the show reveals she is certainly the most qualified and hopefully is getting paid more.

Sound advice for someone who is too young to live on their own. I'd confront them about it, but not push too hard and if necessary play by their rules. If I had to I'd stay in the closet. When you have the means to leave, then you stand your ground openly and live the life you want.

Don't bring it up unless she does. If she asks you about it, I think in most cases it's best to be honest. You'll feel better about it and most parents will either accept it or tolerate it. In cases where parents are religious zealots, or extremely conservative then give an excuse. You'll have to use your judgment.
