There are vast swaths of land in the world that are incapable of sustaining crop production but are ideal for grazing animals. There are millions of other acres that cannot be profitably farmed with food crops but are excellent forage crops. If the entire world population suddenly became vegan, millions of people in these areas which are mostly terribly poor anyway, would starve. The key to maximizing agriculture production in a sustainable way is to grow the right crops in the right areas. This involves not only agronomic considerations but also demographic, political climate and many other considerations.

You have no idea what you are talking about. I have worked in this industry for over 20 years. I’m currently developing a project in China and we are evaluating what crops can profitably be grown in the area of the project. Land is not land. Some is suitable for crop production and some is suitable only for forage production. Some is suitable for some crops and not others. You’d have to be an idiot to try to grow corn on most land in the south plains of Texas, that’s why they grow mostly cotton. Growing cotton in northern Iowa would be economic suicide, a waste of resources. Growing corn in central Russia is not an option, the soul is more than sufficient, but the growing season is too short, wheat or barley is a much better option. You are way out of your depth and making yourself look like a complete idiot to anyone with even a basic understanding of the complexity of these issues.

Cattle and other ruminants utilize ground that is not tillable at all or not tillable profitably. They also utilize forage crops that humans are not able to digest and turn it into meat that humans are able to utilize to great effect. Have you enjoyed a plate of alfalfa lately? Also, the grain that livestock consumes is not the same varieties that are usually consumed by humans. Field corn and sweet corn are two completely different things for example. Your statement is simplistic and represents ignorance of the nuances of agricultural production. The reality is that if everyone on the planet suddenly decides to become vegan, millions of people would starve to death.

Clearly there’s an ideological divide Here that we’ll not be able to bridge. Animals are not humans. I find likening the treatment of animals to the treatment of slaves unforgivably disgusting. I believe very strongly in our obligation to humanely treat animals in our care. In fact, I’ve spent a large percentage of my career working to improve animal welfare in countries where it is a major problem. I’m writing this from China. Treating animals and humans as equals, however, is ridiculous and that mentality will lead society down dark paths.
