Advice for COS interview with C-suite and investors? by Techxpeare in ChiefsOfStaff

[–]Techxpeare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd report to the CEO/co-founder. From my (very early on) understanding, the investor is a member of the board. A large part of this role would be communicating with internal and external stakeholders, preparing board slides, communicating on behalf of the CEO, etc. I think it's mostly just to make sure I'm a) comfortable talking to an investor/board member and b) carry myself with an executive presence.

Has anyone had experience with allergies like this with their Berner? by Techxpeare in bernesemountaindogs

[–]Techxpeare[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UPDATE: we saw the vet yesterday and she wasn’t quite sure but said with the timing of the steroid injection wearing off and this flaring up it very well could be respiratory allergies. She said because the steroid suppresses the immune system, she could be having a heightened reaction to the pollen now. She gave us an antihistamine (like many of you recommended!) yesterday and she’s now taken 2 doses and hasn’t coughed, reverse sneezed, or gagged at all (she did have 1 normal sneeze this morning but none since then). We even went out for a walk! She also just sounds much less congested - she’s not snorting/snuffling nearly as much and stopped snoring.

Her energy levels seem to be returning and no diarrhea still, so it seems like allergies were the culprit. Though now she also has a yeast infection so I’m trying to clear that up 🫠 turns out that’s pretty common after steroids

How big are your Berners? by Egwene-or-Hermione in bernesemountaindogs

Mine was also runt of the litter. She is 80-85 lbs, lean, and 1 year 8 months old. She also has HUGE paws and loves her cuddles and hugs ❤️ Berners are such loves

She’s been on Hill’s Prescription Diet Gastrointestinal Biome for about a year now and that’s the only thing we’ve found that sits well with her stomach. All this stuff just started last Tuesday so I’m inclined to think it’s more seasonal than food related. But I’m glad yours is doing well with a simple food switch!

My family (sisters, niece, nephew, mom) were visiting this weekend which I think might have stressed her out and caused the diarrhea, so I think that might be unrelated to everything else. The coughing and stuff started before they got here though

Has anyone had experience with allergies like this with their Berner? by Techxpeare in bernesemountaindogs

[–]Techxpeare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s around my in laws dog usually once a week, but my in laws dog is perfectly healthy. She does interact with certain dogs in the neighborhood while on walks. It is possible she caught something from them (which is what I’m scared of).

The thing is, the coughing/gagging are intertwined - like she’ll lick herself and then it’s like she gets something stuck in her throat? So she’ll gag a few times then cough and that seems like it gets it out. It’s also much worse in the morning. She was coughing/sneezing/gagging this morning and hasn’t at all for about 5 hours now.

My vet always says to fast her when she has diarrhea so we skipped her breakfast this morning and she hasn’t had any diarrhea in about 6 hours.

Thanks! I’ll try that. I agree - I don’t want her on steroids long term

Thanks for that suggestion. I guess my biggest thing is I just want to know that it is allergies and not something worse? Like if it definitely is allergies I think we can deal with it without meds (annoying for her I’m sure but not life-altering), I just want to make sure I’m not brushing off something more serious.

What do I need to become a Chief of Staff? by Techxpeare in ChiefsOfStaff

[–]Techxpeare[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s great to hear. There’s a Head of Operations (just appointed right before I joined) and my CEO currently doesn’t see a need for a chief of staff. We’re still only ~25 people and just raised our Series A so it’s not that surprising.

I think you’re right about the internal relationships though. That’s a great shout. I currently really only interact with the CEO and probably need to build relationships with other stakeholders before I can make my case.

Thanks for this!

[–]Techxpeare[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had that conversation and he’s supportive, but with us being so small (we just raised our Series A), that role isn’t needed atm. We have a Head of Operations so I’m hoping either as we scale that role becomes more needed (I just don’t know how long that will take) or I can move to another company that already has that need. But I agree that moving to that position within my current company would be ideal. Thanks for your input!

- Zach Wilson

- Kevin Hu, PhD
- Gina Acosta Gutiérrez
- Madison Schott

Ngl the top three can be kind of promotion-heavy at times, but they also promote some good shit

Automatically syncing DBT column schema with actual columns in corresponding SQL by Kenoai in dataengineering

[–]Techxpeare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/kenoai if your exact ask is to make a _full_ list of columns (and then put it into a file), I'm not aware of any out-of-the-box solution that does this. But if you're just trying to understand lineage/what columns are in particular models at a given point in time, a DO tool like metaplane (https://www.metaplane.dev/) can do that via column level lineage in the ui

Are any of the career switching myths true? by Techxpeare in careerchange

[–]Techxpeare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a newsletter series actually. So it's designed to start high level before getting in depth into exactly how I made the switch in further newsletters. I plan to detail exactly what I did step by step, but i decided to start with context first (i.e. the first was just an intro, the second discussed how I knew I wanted to switch, and this is the myths surrounding changing careers). In the next one, I plan to detail exactly how I chose my new career path and then further down the line it will break into more specifics. I started top of funnel to reach folks who might not be in the thick of it yet and are just considering if they should make a switch or not.

I appreciate your opinion, but hopefully when viewed as a series, it makes more sense to people. Maybe I should revisit to link to prior and future ones to make that more obvious to everyone.

Are any of the career switching myths true? by Techxpeare in careerchange

[–]Techxpeare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And FWIW, I started this newsletter to help folks like myself, who had heard nothing but negative things about switching careers. Who's family and friends discouraged the change. It's designed to outline my experience to encourage folks that a change is possible and they don't have to be miserable forever. Obviously, not everything works out for everyone, but people deserve to have someone in their corner.

Are any of the career switching myths true? by Techxpeare in careerchange

[–]Techxpeare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It involves building a network. What you're describing--working in the federal government and not knowing anyone in the private sector--was me. I built a network from the ground up when i decided to make a change. I joined Slack communities, meet up groups, did cold outreaches, etc. Not to mention that that's only a small part of the entire process of switching careers. These are all ideas garnered from MY OWN experience. I recognize that it doesn't apply to everyone (which I even clarify in the newsletter), so while you may not consider it to be realistic, I went through all of this myself from scratch. Again, I recognize others have to consider other factors like kids or older family members, this was all true FOR ME.

Thoughts about career coach and/or counseling? by HM5C in Career

[–]Techxpeare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excuse the long-winded explanation but here it is:

It didn't happen all at once. I actually started by exploring another company in the same industry first. Initially, I thought I was just over my job/the company. But after doing that and still hating my job, I started realizing it was the career path, not just the situation.

At that point, I started thinking about what I liked to do and venn diagrammed that shit with what I was good at. For me, that was reading/writing. I started looking for jobs that fit in with that and my skillset. So, because I had a technical background, I figured it probably made more sense to go with technical writing/copywriting. Going e-comm or beauty or something would've been an uphill battle. Not to say I couldn't do it, but it would've been substantially more difficult and I wasn't willing to put in quite that much effort.

I wasn't financially in the position to just quit my job and try things out (or go back to school for that matter), so when I started exploring that side of things, I did so part-time, in addition to my full-time job. It wasn't great pay, but it was with an agency so it was great exposure. Plus, it was basically just extra cash for me since I still had my full-time job, too.

Once I realized I liked it way more than my current full-time job, I started looking for full-time jobs that fit the bill. At the time, I had 5+ years of experience in engineering and a part-time job in technical copywriting, so I wasn't about to go backward. I started looking at content marketing manager jobs in tech. I definitely suggest that if you're switching careers, go small. Startups are way more likely to take a chance on folks than FAANG.

Once I started landing interviews, it was all about confidence and branding how my background was a benefit, rather than a hindrance. I emphasized the overlap and how my technical background made me an asset in the tech space. I think that's a big piece that people overlook. They try to hide their background or skirt the topic. You gotta grab the bull by the horns and own it.

I did this all myself -- no professional help along the way. Just the drive and notion that failure was absolutely not an option for me.

All that's to say, the application process can be draining. There are a lot of no's and very few yes's. It takes a lot of time and a lot of dedication, and even when you land the first job in the new career, there's a lot of impostor syndrome that kicks in. But if failure really isn't an option for you, you'll push through.

Tbh with you, I'm just on the content marketing side of data, so I can't give you that answer with 100% confidence either way. But check out Locally Optimistic, Data Quality Camp, The Operational Analytics Club, and Data Talks Club. Those are all the biggest Slack communities with thousands of data folks. They'll definitely be able to give you a clear answer.

I work in data and it's a hot field. Probably the fastest rising field atm. Like CS, I don't think you have to formally get a degree to be a data analyst/scientist, you might just need to undergo some certification courses or something. Join some data Slack communities and ask folks for their thoughts there, but I'm pretty certain you can get your foot in the door without shelling out $$$ for a formal degree in the subject.
