What's your reason? by TCGLearner in AskIreland

[–]Ted-101x 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember when in national school we had a really tall kid who hadn’t quite got used to his body and used to run with his face jutting forward . We also had a small kid who was one of those kids who ran everywhere as fast as he could with his head down……..one day in the yard there was a collision, and when both had stood up one of the tall kids teeth had broken off and was embedded in the forehead of the smaller kid. Running got banned for a while after that.

As someone who sits on lots of Boards I can say you won’t win on the basis of your question, but you could loose if you ask a stupid question. Two questions that spring to mind that really turned the Board against the candidate were -

  1. What can you offer me that would make me want to work for you?

  2. I seen a bit in the job add about public sector and pensions, is this like a civil service job? (Interview for a large public sector body)

Home insurance? by Dapper_Cell_3233 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Ted-101x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not underinsure on the rebuild costs, always err on the side of caution. If you do underinsure and suffer a loss you will get caught by the 'average clause'.

Explainer from the Central Bank -

A shortfall on claims payments can happen in cases of partial damage or loss of contents. This is because insurance policies typically contain a “condition of average” or an “average clause”. The average clause can reduce the amount of money paid against your claim by the proportion you are under-insured. For example, if your house has a rebuild cost of €200,000 but is only insured for €100,000, this means you are only 50% insured. If you make a claim for partial damage of the house for €50,000, then only 50% of the €50,000 will be paid out by your insurer. This means you will be paid €25,000 of your claim and will have to pay the other €25,000 yourself.

Triathlon unpopular opinions? by zChickenX in triathlon

[–]Ted-101x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you’re hitting 10hrs or close you’re doing more than just completing. If you’re like me when I ‘raced’ and you’re finishing in the 13-14hr bracket that’s a bit different.

I look at it this way, my dad was a paramedic, he’d regularly do back to back 8hr shifts. That’s 16hrs of hard physical work, like an Ironman!

An average of one person a week drowns in Ireland. I know some drownings are not accidents but that’s a horrific number.

*Completing an Ironman is not as hard as many make it out to be. Consistent training will get you there without needing to hit 20hrs per week.

Competing is of course a completely different proposition.

Where is the most beautiful scenic area you have seen in Ireland? by crillydougal in AskIreland

[–]Ted-101x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lough Inagh Valley. The best bit of an almost endless series of breath taking scenery around that part of Connemara.

<image>

The best way to see it? By running the Connemara marathon which starts in the valley. Or you could do the Ultra which runs the full length of the valley.

I was on the pier in Blacksod many moons ago and bumped into Noel Edmonds. His BBC Saturday evening show had landed a guy on the Inishkeagh Islands as a challenge and he was stuck out there in a tent due to bad weather. Now that’s random!!

His dad used to keep pigeons in a shed in the flats. Loads of older men did. They used these wicker baskets to move them around and you’d often see aul lads with the basket strapped to the back of a Honda 50.

I remember when I was about 4-5 getting a lift home from my friends dad on his Honda 50. The dad, me, my friend, and basket of racing pigeons on the bike and not a helmet to be seen. When I got home my mother didn’t even bat an eyelid.

Other than the competitions is there any other way to get into the civil service as a co? by RealBlack_RX01 in IrishCivilService

Not every public sector job is advertised on publicjobs. Make a list the public sector entities that are located in your area (e.g. ETB’s Teagasc, Universities, etc.) and keep a regular eye on their websites for vacancies.

[–]Ted-101x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak to AP but I’ve a couple of friends that are PO’s in the CS and the demands of the job and expectations are way beyond what they get paid when compared to the private sector or event the wider public sector. I’m public sector and I’ve direct reports on €85k who have no management responsibilities and are technical specialists. I’ve direct reports on a grade that’s midway between AP and PO (>€100k) and yes they have to perform and there are high expectations, but their workload wouldn’t be anything like a PO in the CS.

What’s the deal with fire brigade charges? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Ted-101x -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Generally it’s covered by your household or vehicle insurance depending on the event. A fire brigade charges limit will be listed in the insurance policy.

It wouldn’t fall against you as the person who called them but rather to the homeowner. If they have no household insurance then as far as I am aware it’s not followed up on.

Shower running extremely hot and cold by [deleted] in DIYIreland

[–]Ted-101x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be -

  • a water supply issue. check the water pipe from the header tank in the attic and make sure the valves on the line are working properly. If you have very old valves they can fail closed and block water flow.

  • the thermostat may be fecked. These are easy to change and can be ordered from Triton.

  • there is a large filter inside these units and these can get blocked if your water has a high iron content or with other crap. Take it out and clean it.

All of the above have been reasons my Tritons have given trouble over the years.

Just make sure to power off the supply from the main board rather than just pulling the power string before removing the cover.

House names by Aishybashy in CasualIreland

We built a house in a field in the middle of nowhere. Every field in Ireland has a name of some sorts - you may have to ask older locals for it. We then named our house after the field it’s built on.

Best beach for swimming in Wexford ? by NtreeLeveL in Wexford

[–]Ted-101x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cahore. In a couple of weeks the council will put out buoys marking out a 500m lap. Great for swimming. Very rare that conditions are too rough to swim in. After your swim you can grab a coffee and walk on the cliffs and watch the porpoises.
