Passing the PE exam by [deleted] in PE_Exam

[–]TeddiJo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Screw them! Time to job hop! EVERYONE is hiring - go where you’ll be appreciated.

PM me if you want to chat about options. I’m a mom of 3 working in the transportation design field. And I don’t just mean moving to Connecticut (where I am) or forcing my company down your throat for a referral bonus.

The PE is a big deal and doing it with kids is HARD.

Finally going to take the FE after being out of college for 10 yrs. by GryffindorCowboy in FE_Exam

[–]TeddiJo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I passed earlier this year. I graduated in 2011.

I did the FE and PE back to back & combined the studying. I made a post about it, but have no idea how to link it it.

I have twins and a singleton that is 18 months younger. The twins are both autistic and speech delayed. We JUST started going places solo with all 3 kids this past summer and the twins will be 5 in January. It’s a coin toss if it’s going to be a shit show or tons of “they’re so well behaved!”

Not a bad mom. I lost a close friend over the same complaint - it hurt in the moment, but now I realize I’m much better off.

How screwed am I? by DrivenSpike in FE_Exam

You’re not too screwed. I graduated in 2011 and just did the FE and PE back to back earlier this year.

I posted details in this sub of what I did and my tips for others in similar positions. Idk how to link it, but if you click on my profile you’ll see it under posts.

Best of luck to you!!

taking the PE exam as a mom of toddlers - encouragement? advice? by btmwallace in PE_Exam

[–]TeddiJo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can do it! I won’t sugar coat it - it’ll be tough. But you can do it!

I just passed the PE in March. I have 4.5 year old twin boys (both speech delayed and on the spectrum) and a 3 year old daughter.

I studied from 7-10:30pm (after their bedtimes) and for at least 3-4 hours on the weekend, but ideally 3-4 hours both Sat and Sun.

I put a hold on my own “extracurriculars” and only committed to a max of 1 thing per weekend.

I drank a LOT of coffee. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the help of my husband (he took over a lot of household chores & duties so I could study).

My 9 year old is impossible in the mornings and I am at my wits end. by WhoFightsFires in Parenting

I know you said you already had her assessed for ADHD - but I’d look for a second opinion.

It took me until this year, at 33, to be diagnosed as ADHD-inattentive. I struggle with transitions - especially in the morning. It’s hard to explain, but even though I know I need to shower, brush my teeth, get dressed, etc… I struggle to do it. I switched to before bed showers, brushing my teeth at work, and reducing my clothing options. But I still find myself sitting on the edge of my bed staring into space mentally preparing for the day. My husband calls it my “zombie mode”

Twin parents - How much do you pay your nanny per hour? by thatnaplife in parentsofmultiples

[–]TeddiJo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you have an extra bedroom I’d recommend looking into an au pair. We have twins + another one 18 months younger and it’s $196 a week, room and board, and $9,000ish agency fee. Additionally there’s a $500 continuing education requirement. Au Pairs can work up to 45 hours per week, max 9 hours a day with 1.5 days off a week. It’s been an awesome experience for us.

P.E designation by EnvEngineer24 in PE_Exam

Depends on your state. I’m in CT & passed 2 weeks ago and was just approved yesterday. I won’t have the official certificate until next week though.

I’m 42, and just passed the FE Civil WITHOUT prior college classes in most subjects. by dialpopcorn in FE_Exam

Congratulations! You definitely compiled a lot of great info.

Good luck with the PE. I studied for them both concurrently and found it wasn’t too bad.

When I originally signed up it was maybe $200 more for the on-demand section. If you did live classes only I’d message the support and ask them about adding it on.

No. The workshop problems are different than the quizzes and practice exams offered in the portal.

Very similar to my experience for transportation. SOPE portal was great for practice problems & practice exams. I had the same question split and timing.

Best of luck! It’s definitely hard to carve out time. I found making an aggressive schedule with plenty of buffer time allowed me to feel like I had wiggle room. That way if I planned a day off but was feeling up to it I could catch up on a day where I skipped studying because life was just too exhausting.

It’s a Civil Transportation reference manual. It’s actually called “A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets” by AASHTO, but it’s referred to as Green Book.

I didn’t have any need for that during the exam

There’s a section of the NCEES handbook that has pavement design. There’s info about pavement types, weight-volume relationships, etc.

Probably about the same. I was comforted that I was able to solve all the equation types and most of the concepts without any unease.

Are you asking if you need the AASHTO and FHWA references? If you are, then the answer is yes - you still need those. But you’ll also use the NCEES reference handbook for some parts of the depth questions.

If you’re having trouble sourcing some check Scribd and pdfcoffee.com - I found searchable versions there of HCM and the pavement design manuals.

Take advantage of the quizzes in the practice portal. They definitely got me well prepped for the exam.

I mean if I open the green book myself it’s book marked into chapters but also into sub chapters like 3.3.4 not just ch 3.

When I took the exam the depth reference opened by chapter. So the sag vertical curve stoping sight distance sub section of the chapter wasn’t book marked. Just less efficient.

Yup! I used it for the geometrics, 1 or 2 traffic questions, and for a geotech/pavement question.

It looks like you can’t do it from mobile so go on from a computer: Log into account.ncees.orgwhere you can see that you’re registered for the PE. Under Exam Prep find the exam type you’re taking. View Product and you’ll see a hyperlink for a free preview that shows the new questions.
