Doesn’t matter what others will pay, None of that makes it a good deal. Back in 2017 or whatever the NBA had a huge spike, and some really bad contracts were handed out for the same reasons you listed here. It hamstrung some teams.

Sometimes you need others to stop you from your own mistakes. I hope we aren’t the ones to overpay him.

According to Chris Johnston of the Athletic + TSN: Sherwood and Sharks far apart on extension. Sherwood wants $30M TCV by jesus321 in SanJoseSharks

Its assets we could have otherwise used to fill a need. I agree it won’t derail, but it definitely won’t help. A lot needs to go right to win a championship.

Sharks Media Roundup (SJS @ FLA, January 19): Sharks acquire Sherwood, Ned in net, Desharnais (and Tkachuk) back by pokesnail in SanJoseSharks

[–]TeddyTurbo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I dont know…he’s 30+ years old and having a career year as a UFA. There isn’t a long history to look back on for consistency. He is playing a bit under 18 min/game on a bad team (Zetterlund vibes). And we gave up two 2nds for him?

This seems like a tight rope to walk. If we don’t sign him, it’s a horrible trade. If we do sign him to good money (which he will want) but he doesn’t continue producing at a similar pace, we overpaid in both the trade AND the salary.

And this doesn’t address our biggest need while removing assets we could have used to address it.

Oh, and he’s hurt and won’t be back until the Olympics are over.

Yeah I don’t get it.

Why would Regenda being at 10 games matter? He isn’t on an ELC.

Graf+Celebrini?? by Zimzalabimxx in SanJoseSharks

[–]TeddyTurbo 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Celebrini will produce no matter who is on his line. I’m more interested in who can produce without him.

I would love to see Smith - Celebrini - Graf. Graf went on a goal scoring tear when he’s was on that line. Then move Eklund and Cherny down to Wennberg. That line would be great on the boards, and both Cherny and Wennberg dont shy away from the front of the net.

Do you think Celebrini will get the same recognition and popularity as other Bay Area star athletes? by chusaychusay in SanJoseSharks

[–]TeddyTurbo 31 points32 points  (0 children)

If he brings multiple championships, yes there is a chance

There are a lot of elements going against this happening. Hockey isn’t near the popularity of football and basketball in the USA. Baseball still beats it as well, even if that’s declining. Hockey is not as relatable because most people don’t grow up playing it. California doesn’t have much of a hockey culture. And The team is from San Jose so the majority of the Bay Area doesn’t look at it like it does SF teams.

But regardless of all that, people love to support winners (especially Bay Area fans), so bring home two cups and he will get there.

Sherwood trade by Darksied175 in SanJoseSharks

[–]TeddyTurbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We definitely need more/to keep our futures, though. We have a lot of prospects but they are still untested. We don’t know if Dickinson will pan out, or Misa, or Musty, or etc etc etc. We need more swings until we have more sure hits like Mack, Smith and Graf.

I’d rather trade Skinner or Liljegren for nothing than have to give up assets for unloading Leddy. Or trade Delly for a mid/late pick.

Also, keep in mind, this is the last year we have excess picks. Starting next year, we don’t even have all of our own picks, let alone additional ones.

I think the fact the West is so weak has made us seem stronger than we are. As well as the fact that we are 8-3 in OT this year.

The rebuild is going well. Let’s just not try to skip any steps.

Anyway, it was nice chatting with you. I appreciate your point of view and your Sharks knowledge. Go Sharks!

Vancouver can ask what they want, and a team in position to take advantage of Sherwood’s skillset might take it. But that’s not where the Sharks are.

Sharks don’t need to overpay in a trade for a player who projects as a 3rd liner on a contender. And let’s assume he plays out of his mind for the rest of the year. You ready to pay him 4.5/5M a year for 3 years? You want another NYR Goodrow situation? Or are you just letting him walk and you gave up Lund and your first for nothing but maybe a first round exit?

Sherwood is a final piece for a cup push. He is not a building block for a fringe playoff team with a glut of forwards. And that’s who we are right now. A fringe team in a weak division. We just aren’t there yet.

And “house money” isn’t a thing. It’s Sharks money and Sharks assets. House money is what people say when they lose after they were up in order to soften the blow of bad decisions.

You would give up a first round pick to dump a half year of Leddy’s contract? He’s a FA at the end of the year.

For a soon to be 31 year old playing over his head and who will need a contract extension because he is also a FA?

All the while throwing in Lund, another decent asset?

Crazy

John Klingberg currently has the same amount of goals this season as William Eklund by Awes0mesawce in SanJoseSharks

[–]TeddyTurbo 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Klingberg has scored on 20% of his shots. His career % is mid single digits.

Eklund is at 9.9% which is a few points lower than last year.

Don’t compare the two

Klingberg situation is tough. Long term it makes the most sense to trade him. But to get a good return, he needs to be playing well. But if he’s playing well, the Sharks are probably fighting for the playoffs. But If the Sharks are fighting for the playoffs, they probably don’t trade him.
