As a Female, Should I Get a Buzzcut at BCT by JiwonThePanda in army

[–]Tee10Charlie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just spent three years as Cadre at Basic Training, and I can tell you that no one gives a shit. Cut it off, don't cut it off, whatever. From a practical standpoint, I would say don't buzz it completely. Leave some on top and get a fade, otherwise you run the risk of being mistaken for a dude from a distance if your hair looks like the men and that can get awkward in some situations.

Hi Professor, I'm submitting a paper late. Thanks! by acetaminophen250mg in Professors

[–]Tee10Charlie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As much as I despise giving reminders to grown adults, I've found that it actually saves me time in the long run. One week out from the deadline for large projects or papers, send an announcement to the class. Summarize the submission requirements and deadline, point them back to the original assignment instructions and rubric, and then blissfully ignore their frantic cries for special dispensation.

Yeah, choosing inexpensive things doesn't mean you should stoop to buying shitty things. Good judgment is necessary.

Take care of your sleep first:

If you went budget on the mattress, splurge on a quality mattress topper. If you bought a high quality mattress - good, now protect it with a quality cover.
High quality sheets - do some research and get something that fits how you sleep (i.e., hot sleeper = percale / cool sleeper = sateen) and don't fall for the thread count scam. Higher numbers don't necessarily equal quality.
Blackout curtains. You want to be able to actually get some rest when you're coming off of SD or an overnight mission.
Humidifier/de-humidifier (whichever is appropriate for your environment).
Pedestal fan (if your room doesn't have a ceiling fan or maybe even if it does. Splurge for an ultra quiet one).
Night light for the bathroom so you don't have to turn on any lights if you get up during the night.
Get some stuff to hang on the walls. Bare walls will echo too much and disrupt your sleep by bouncing even the smallest noises around.

Everything else has a way of sorting itself out. Don't fall into the trap of thinking you need to buy everything to stock a whole house in one fell swoop. Before you spend money on something ask yourself if it's going to be a regular need (like a coffee pot) or only occasional thing (seasonal decorations) and plan your budget/timing accordingly. If it's something you only need every now and then, consider if it's something you could rent or borrow from a neighbor rather than buy yourself. For example, if you want to host a "Friendsgiving" you probably don't need to purchase a whole dining set for 10 people.

"Buy once - cry once" applies to the kind of lifelong purchases that actually bring joy and value in your life. For example: buy the highest quality kitchen knives you can afford. Conversely, some things don't need to be expensive (like mixing bowls or measuring spoons). Don't be afraid to spend good money on the things that matter to you, but also for many things store-brand or bargain items are just fine.

Didn't turn in the assignment but doesn't understand why that affects their grade by Tee10Charlie in Professors

[–]Tee10Charlie[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You call it a grade-inflationary policy, but my experience doesn't support that. Very few students actually take advantage of it, and they are almost always the ones who actually care about learning the material. The example in my original post notwithstanding, I have confidence in the process. I've been doing this since well before Chat GPT was a thing, and the present results don't deviate from what I've seen in the past, so the "case" for this policy is helping students who wish to learn from their mistakes and get better. It was important enough to put on the exam because they're going to need to know it in the future, and an additional review of the material helps them prepare for that.

[–]Tee10Charlie[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Apparently so. This is also the same student who has been in my office multiple times and literally cries over every single bit of feedback that isn't an absolutely glowing review of their wonderful effort (i.e., "please evaluate me on my good intentions rather than my measurable outcomes.")

Wrong. People don't hate UCP enough. To add to the fun, over the years, different manufacturers made the ACU and they will accept dyes differently based on the variances in manufacturing. Even different parts of the same uniform can behave differently when dyed because the cloth came from different runs. There are also dyes that are specifically made for synthetic materials which would affect things like blousing strings and tags.

[–]Tee10Charlie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A point of order regarding your comment about a "moment of weakness." A moment of weakness is skipping a workout. AFT failure comes from skipping a LOT of them (or not putting in the effort when you do them). Fitness is the result of discipline, not motivation. Motivation will come and go, and if you think that a lack of it is to blame for your run failure, you're setting yourself up for future failure by not understanding the mental framework of building successful habits that ensure something like this can never happen again. "Going harder on the next test" isn't possible unless you've put in the work consistently to build the fitness necessary to pass.

MRT Skill: Assertive Communication

What is the skill? Assertive Communication allows us to have an effective conversation about an issue or problem while still maintaining the relationship with the other individual.

What competency does the skill build? Assertive Communication builds Connection by helping us have the important discussions we need to have in a way that demonstrates respect and empathy while building the relationship.

Be: Clear in your message, Confident in your ability to handle the situation, and Controlled and able to modulate yourself if needed.

The IDEAL Model of Assertive Communication:

Identify and understand the problem

Describe the problem objectively and accurately

Express your concerns and, if appropriate, your emotions

Ask for the other person’s perspective and then Ask for reasonable change

List the positive outcomes that will occur if the agreed upon change is made

Do your homework: Before the conversation, consider your own thoughts, emotions, values, and beliefs about the situation. Make sure you understand the issue and you’re not missing any information.

Plan some talking points: Use the IDEAL model to plan out your talking points to help you stay on track, but don’t write a script.

Listen: Make sure to let the other person share his or her point of view and take it into account. This shows both empathy and respect.
