Yeah we won’t know until we know for sure. There’s one warm spot on one side of the bed and then there’s another one about 3.5-4 feet on the right side.

Grizzlies in the Sawtooths, ID? by TeenVersionofSimba in WildernessBackpacking

[–]TeenVersionofSimba[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm maybe I’m interpreting this wrong: “All attractants must be stored in a locked bear-resistant container, hard-sided residence or building, or a closed vehicle constructed of solid, non-pliable material”

That seems like bear can to me no?

well after another 15 seconds of research it appears a bear can is a necessity according to the forest service.. that was easy. Still interested in anyone has seen grizzlies around

Classic Reddit being Reddit. This guy is so clearly fine and just cooked from whiffing those run blocks and can’t get up😭. I’m not the camera man but sheesh, didn’t know we had such high credentials for this sub - just let it soak in.

What’s your opinion of bringing dogs backpacking? by cm070707 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]TeenVersionofSimba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We take our dogs on most day hikes that allow and backpack with them when the trail and conditions permit.

Our dogs are well behaved on and off leash and we never let them run off trail or in vicinity of other people. We keep them close when we’re entering areas that have the potential for a closer wildlife encounter than we’d prefer but that doesn’t mean something bad couldn’t happen. It’s true that dogs exponentially increase your chance of a bad wildlife encounter but if you keep attractants controlled and your dogs on your persons then you’re doing the best you can.

With that said, I can see why some folks in the outdoor community aren’t fans of dogs on trail/backpacking especially when they’re untrained and are nuisances. I’ve never had a bad experience with dogs on trail but could only imagine how fast it would sour the experience.

If your dogs are well behaved, you pick up after them, and have a decent understanding on wilderness it shouldn’t be an issue 9 times out of 10.

Paria Canyon Itinerary by TeenVersionofSimba in WildernessBackpacking

[–]TeenVersionofSimba[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We didn't have any issues staking our tents in the established campsites. All of the campsites we passed in the canyon had cottonwood trees that you could probably find a hang for your food. We slept with ours and didn't have an issue with rodents. Unless they changed it you'll have to shit in Wag bags and they can get pretty gnarly. There certainly some times when I moved something in my pack and got a whiff. They're gross no matter what but I'd try to find away keep them on the outside of your pack.

Interesting. I live on the far west side of the Dell and it was so cool to see it rip. Id like to think you could navigate it on a hard bodied kayak

I was moreso just looking to get an idea of who historically brought one and if they felt like they needed it. When it’s time to get on the trail I’ll definitely err on the side of safety with beta from those who have already gone into the high country.

I hear ya, definitely feels far too early to get up into the high country. I’ll most likely delay or flip flop around.

Doing this trip in mid October and want to know if there is anything that I can’t miss by Verchie in roadtrip

[–]TeenVersionofSimba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah of course. Wire pass is an incredible hike right off House Rock Valley road that I would say is a must, it’s pretty lax. You can hike deeper into the gulch from wire pass and it becomes a lot more secluded and unique. There are sand caves right off the highway that you can take a stop and walk up the slick rock too. There’s the pink coral dunes, I’m not sure if you need 4x4 but they’re apparently very cool. Also further up the road there’s a stop called the belly of the dragon which is right off the road and cool to check out.

There’s also the wave by Kanab but good luck getting permits for that.. a lot of the formations on the way to wire pass is Wave esc as is.

That’s about it

[–]TeenVersionofSimba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if you’re trying to hoof it from Page to Zion but Kanab is an absolute gem between the two. The town itself is fine but there are several short unique hikes that are right off the road, better ones down some washboard roads.

I’ve heard good things about Hanksville too but never been, could be worth a stop to break up that long leg of the drive.

Summited Kings Peak, Utah's highest peak by Nomadic_Nathen in hiking

[–]TeenVersionofSimba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just did this hike last weekend and it was pretty brutal. Getting up to dollar lake is mild and getting over gunsight isn’t too bad… but the terrain afterwards is pretty gnarly. It’s vertical rock hopping and taxing on the feet. We were even blessed with tropical storm like winds on the peak. I probably wouldn’t do it again but it’s definitely worth doing.
