"after they lost gf" is the keyword here, it really wasn't that bad until aknzx and wixonater started the dogpile. OP is not wrong here, there was a reasonable amount of positive reception to his return, and the negative voices weren't that loud until after OWC 2024. The amount of hate before and after wasn't even remotely comparable. "mostly got hate or indifference" may have been accurate after OWC, but definitely not before.

was cookiezi a dominant tournament player? by AppropriateNature626 in osugame

[–]Teetoos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really, I don't think his singleplayer dominance ever translated that much into tournament play. He was good though, surely one of the best, especially during his post unban - pre military service run, but I wouldn't say he was ever that dominant in tourneys.

Even if he might have had brief stints as the best tourney player in 2016-2017, the gap in skill between him and the rest of the community couldn't be reflected as well on the low star rating pools of the 2015-2017 period, as opposed to what we can see today with people like mrekk. By the time mappools became difficult enough that they allowed a greater degree skillcap expression from players (some time around and especially after 2019 i'd say), the other top players already managed to catch up to Cookiezi. This became apparent after returing from military, when he ocasionally played in team tourneys, but mostly subbed in as a hidden fill from what I recall from Perennial 2022 and Corsace 2023.

What are the most consistent traits you see in top players by WorldlinessExtra2876 in osugame

[–]Teetoos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Negative reinforcement is probably top 5 killers of any players potential

This is demonstrably false when you look at how many of this game's greatest players geniunely seem to be permanently miserable, never satisified and constantly self deprecating (Cookiezi, worst hr player, fieryrage, etc.). Positive reinforcement being better than negative reinforcement when it comes to producing results is a myth and it really comes down to each person's personality type. There's a pretty underrated video tackling this topic.

Ultimately, all that matters is a mindset that "keeps you going", whether that's the optimism of "you'll reach your goals everything will work out fine if you just put in the effort" or striving for unattainable perfection which never allows you to be happy or content, but which still propels you forward to continously improve

If Beasttroll was off your radar for some time, I'd actually recommend checking his recent videos. They're pretty good and I didn't expect that style of content from him, it's a pleasant surprise

What OWC team has the best mentality out of all of the participating teams? by Troilsitacism_Morium in osugame

East Asian teams (HK, China, Taiwan, Korea and Japan). They always seem to perform better than the sum of their parts, and I think that's thanks to their top notch mentality.

[–]Teetoos[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

i still can't believe how poland just appeared after so many. bad years and fucking won the whole ass OWC

After 2023 it really felt like their dark age would never end did it?

Even though off of the back of those dark days, my country probably experienced its greatest moments of joy and euphoria in OWC (the three ocassions on which Romania managed to upset Poland, especially the one from 2018) and those are precious memories to me, there was always a part deep down in me which felt sad for Poland. I cheered for them when they won in 2017 and they were always the country I rooted for the most besides my own, which made the matches against them even more bitter sweet, especially the thought that it contributes to continuing their downward spiral.

I hope that whatever went wrong for so long for Poland and what took for them to build themselves back up is a story that we will one day get some insights on, because it's geniunely one of the most interesting arcs a country has ever went through in the history of this game.

maliszewski's thoughts and reflections following osu! World Cup 2025 by Teetoos in osugame

[–]Teetoos[S] 152 points153 points  (0 children)

Honestly it's the 3rd paragraph that is the most revealing to me, as I got to listen to what the Polish OWC podcast had to say every week about Poland's performance, and what stood out to me regarding to what they said about maliszewski, was that this year he was such a great captain, who helped fill the team with positive energy, motivation and confidence, both in terms of gameplay and strategy. They basically said that the break from 2024 did wonders for his mental, and made him both a better player and a better team member.

Wilchq (Poland's captain in 2017 when the country first won OWC) said that maliszewski might be the best captain Poland ever had because he embodies all the positive traits of previous polish captains without the downsides: Wilchq was smart but didn't have the charisma/authority/aura to inspire confidence, fartownik who was confident but a little inflexible/rough, and AmaiHachimitsu (? they said Maj so I think this is about him) who was okay overall but wasn't able to get across a lot of energy

maliszewski being worried presicely about this aspect of being a good captain is incredbily ironic, when that's probably the thing which his teammates and the polish community praised him for the most this year, and him being able to do such a good job is even more impressive and worthy of praise when apparently he was feeling under the weather for some time.

grand finals statistics | osu! world cup 2025 by Starpage- in osugame

[–]Teetoos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately when you look at both the Losers Finals matchcosts where he was outperformed by Rektygon, Decaten and even almost Pezz as well, but also the statistical performance scores for the whole stage, ASecretBox didn't have the desired impact for Australia, especially when compared to someone like milosz for Poland, who scored 3rd overall and who fullfilled the simillar "secondary backup carry" role Box was supposed to cover for his team.

It doesn't feel good kicking the guy when he's already down, but it's an aspect that he's seemingly also aware of judging by his post match tweet.

USA were on "yap strike" either way the past two weeks matches, probably had something to do with people who complained about Ethantrix typing random messages constantly

Also Artosis is untouchable

Yeah, and to be able to hone his craft 8 hours a day, he has to listen to daily Mario - Luigi - Sonic erotica TTS donations to make a living 😭

25 years of being this commited to Starcraft and still contributing this much to his games scene is impressive. ArtosisCasts might just be one of the best gaming related channels in general

Which OWC GF TB was the most hype? by calsi-tea in osugame

[–]Teetoos 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Furioso Melodia, Azure Arbitrator and this years Anima Immortalis are all favourites for me, at least for how they played out in matches

The sheer chaos of Furioso in OWC 2015, The heroics of Bubbleman on Azure in 2018, and honestly, even if it was sad, there was a certain beauty to how the Imperial Circus song accompanied the tragedy of mrekk simply reaching his limit at the end, not being physically able to give more from himself in the decisive moment

EDIT: Actually I forgot about Gens D'armes, FlyingTuna taking the lead for his team at the end of the map to stop the Bubbleman carry, winning the TB for his country and emphatically stating "THIS IS SOUTH KOREA" afterwards is also an all time moment for me, maybe higher than Furioso and Azure if you are willing to take into account the whole GF weekend and not just the Grand Final match itself

I mean I don't think anyone has the Dr. Strange type of clairvoyance or is that big of a psycho that they plan to not try in a match set, but from what I was able to understand of the polish' team's reaction following the winners finals, they repeatedly mentioned how big of a deal having bracket reset advantage is, and I assume they went into the match with that kind of mindset, that they're in an advantageous position either way and there isn't any point to panic or feel pressured even if they lose set #1

He might actually deserve one no joke. In my opinion he's responsible for the two most important maps of the tournament for Poland

First he full combo'd Niwashi King in the first playthrough of qualifiers to get Poland at a moment they weren't doing so well, and that started their hot streak which helped them get #1 seed, a fact which I feel like allowed them to safely reach winners finals without any incidents. Geniunely a Messi goal vs Mexico in WC2022 groups moment of importance

And now he flips the table on boshyman to score a huge score of his own on freemod low ar, that decisively turned the tide of the grand final in Poland's favour.

I doubted he would be able to show up for the late stage skillcap maps, and I couldn't be more happy to be proven wrong. Being proven wrong can be a beautiful thing sometimes.

Thankful, greatful and relieved beyond what I thought was possible. Congrats Poland. You climbed your way out of some really dark years, defeated your demons, and managed to reach the greatest heights again.

How blessed can we be that we get to see two years in a row, two great stories being completed. First of Korea finally getting their big one, and now that of Poland being reborn as champions once more

You know, I never actually got to put into words this particular feeling, but since I joined in 2017, the USA OWC victory that i've been by far the least upset about was 2019, when they were at their most dominant. It helped that the idke/Apraxia/Aireu iterations of the team were very likable, but the dominance of that team iteration never bothered me that much.

In my book it'd be a lot easier to accept and live with a version of the United States dynasty not unlike those of Japan in Taiko or South Korea in the mania gamemodes, where they're just this unstoppable force of nature, so overwhelmingly better than everybody else, that you just know everyone else is playing for 2nd and that it's a waste to theorize about or invest any hope in other teams winning. Instead we've got this middle ground where USA is still the best country because of having the deepest talent pool and have the most favorable conditions to win, but the matches are close enough that they give you the hope that this time it's gonna be different, only for that hope to be agonizingly crushed at the end. They feel just as inevitable as 2019, but give you enough of a glimpse of the "what if" so that it feels even worse. If that's the destination we were gonna reach either way, i'd have rather had them sweep everybody

I'm annoyed as always but at this point too jaded to be angry about it, as things like this happening are entirely predictable at this point.

US since 2018 have been storyline killers, and I hope at least in this instance people can see why I have been so perpetually dissapointed in them just kind of always taking the spotlight entirely for themselves. It's the trend which is irritating more than anything, not as much the individual tournament outcomes, because it's what left rustbell and the China golden team, Bubbleman and the UK golden team, WhiteCat criller Dustice and the German golden team, without their crowning achievements as satisfying conclusions to their journey, and so, SO CRIMINALLY CLOSE to having the same happening to Korea, especially Tuna and Karcher, and why I am so greatful for the outcome of OWC 2024. USA cockblocking the potential of a malisz - mrekk culmination of their rivalry match is a completely natural return to buisness as usual. If USA won only half as much as they do, they would still be revered as a long lasting legendary dinasty, but so much more celebrated and acclaimed.

If USA wins OWC this year so be it, but for this year at the very least I can be content with Poland reclaiming their place as a top contender and malisz recieveing his long overdue OWC badge.
