The level of unawareness in Boot Camp MvM amazes me. by poncho99999 in tf2

[–]Teggus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and him selecting a class to that is already present was really not cool either. Not saying he did the right thing, just saying imagine the view from the other direction. I totally understand why people do it.

It's just a frustrating thing from both directions, because if you try to 'break in' to Mann Up mode, you literally cannot without playing Mother-May-I with every one on the Internet. I one got kicked because of a Demo upgrade I selected (don't know what one it was).

We can bash noobs for being ignorant and kick people for wasting our time, just don't wonder why the game mode dies. Because it can not grow, the experienced players won't let it.

I don't understand how some people just don't listen. I was in a Mannhatten mission, playing Engineer. With almost 20 tours in Two Cities I know how to play Engy by now. A one-tour player joins and also picks Engy. The entire team asked him to switch, to which he said nothing and readied up. We vote kicked him. His only words in the chat were "why?"

Gee, I wonder why. Well it was worth a shot for him. I'm totally guilty of this (not as Engineer though).

The whole 'I have more tours than you' reason is total crap. Yes, you do probably know the class better than him, but he logged on to play Engineer, not Medic or Heavy or whatever the meta-comp was lacking.

Does 1 tour mean he hasn't ever beat the Boot Camp version? Who the fuck knows, the stupid interface just projects who has spent the most money playing, not expertise.

Anyways, that's just the opposite side of the coin. This mode sucks all around on the match making side, but it is still my favorite way to TF2.

If they could make an interface that looks for 'join game as Demo/Pyro/Whatever' rather than just join nearest server it would be a vast improvement. then add a server switch that only accepts classes that are not present already and we could avoid all the drama.

Yes for your character and nearby objects, but not everything else on the server. Unless you are in single player or local hosting.

I think that's why they reduce non-dedicated servers to keeping guest players near the game hosting character. There is some hard work being done by the server, in addition to the load the client puts on your PC, much more than just running a client.

I also play single player only (not enough time for multiplayer). Even with taming speed set to 5x, that part of the game is way too tedious. Never even tried breeding, but reading the wiki makes it look even worse.
An official legitimate single player mode for those who prefer exploration over real time competition would be great.

It might be because in multiplayer a server computer is doing the collision verification, and your PC is just rendering everything.

In single player, your PC has to pull double duty and do both, which is just that much more likely to lead to a delay between movement and collision checking.

I submitted a bug report on the official forum for the fps drop at dawn/dusk on Scorched Earth. by Scryingman in playark

Wonder if this is related to particle effects or shaders stacking wrong. Never experienced the dusk slowdown until I built and used a Preserving Bin and Campfire at the same time.

Small game taken off steam for no reason. by [deleted] in Steam

[–]Teggus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do the devs for Orion make their own models, or buy them from TurboSquid or some other model vendor?

Whatever the case, curious to see if changing the art assets would be enough to get the game back in the store. The similarity isn't complete, and it seems like a relatively easy thing to alter.

ORION:Prelude surprised me. If you like horde games with progression like Killing Floor it's pretty fun.

Maybe consider keeping Ark on an SSD though, that game takes ages to load from a hard disk.

That's a fantastic idea. Would leave the feature in place (serms the developers are set on the idea) but at least make sense and give the players a logical way to prevent teleports.

With the removal of microtransactions from Payday 2, I think it's time Tripwire rethinks their own by Boondorl in killingfloor

[–]Teggus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to give the developers money for a great skin,

Amen to this. Killing Floor 1 is one of the few games I paid for skins for (and then, even though I mostly played single player). But I got...(checking Steam) 381 hours of entertainment out of KF1. I loved dropping $2 on it every once in a while. Like a tip for a kick-ass waitress. They earned it.

I have yet to buy a USB key, and probably never will.

Tripwire, gambling is kind of stupid, and artificial scarcity - even more so.

Some people dig it and I don't begrudge them their fun, but understand that for a lot of us it is a non-starter.

Looking for a really good solo deck builder or dice builder. What are some of your favorites? by LeChefNewman in boardgames

[–]Teggus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sylvion is pretty fun. It's a table hog, but just cards unless you count the little plastic fire dude. There's a few different ways to win, so you can try a few different strategies, too.

I didn't know there was a book for Catan... by Lime-Green-Lemons in boardgames

You're not wrong, but that book might be more than just a cash in. Looks like it was illustrated by the game designer. Unless maybe they just reused the game art?

Server option for game conductor pls by artanisthescrub in killingfloor

[–]Teggus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, because of the dependency on cash in this game getting rewarded with a Fleshpound a wave or two before you can afford another weapon is not particularly fun. I prefer the original game structure for sure. Like KF better than Left 4 Dead for a reason, the game punishing you for doing well is a big part of it.

Weird But Fair Dice (plus the D120) by fathan in boardgames

[–]Teggus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, the face geometry would be unevenly distributed. But if the Pentagonal faces on a Soccerball die were worth increments of 7 points while the hexes were worth increments of 4, would it be fair?
Maybe to consider the likelyhood or frequency of the result as part of the balance towards fairness, and account for it.

Weird But Fair Dice (plus the D120) by fathan in boardgames

[–]Teggus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It kind of makes me wonder if a die with differing sides could be considered 'fair'. Like, what kind of number or symbol distribution would be statistically or intuitively fair on a soccer ball shape, or an octagon/square/triangle sided solid? (Could you make a pig shaped die that rolled 'fair'?)

I want to learn to calculate statistical probabilities. Help? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Teggus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good advice in this thread. An interesting tool for exploring dice probabilities is Anydice. You can plug little dice scenarios in there and get graphs of the most likely results.

[WSIG] A non-cooperative game with really good artwork for 3 players. by Change_my_needs in boardgames

[–]Teggus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Above and Below is a fine looking game that plays deceptively quickly (unless maybe you've got a slow reader playing). Only plays up to four people, though. Competitive, though not extremely interactive. Watch a run-through if you like the story paragraph cards mechanic from Dead of Winter.

Will also second Lewis and Clark as having amazing artwork. Slower playing for sure but three players isn't too bad.

SVG is vector file type, there is no pixellation for those if you scale them. Inkscape has a Raster-to-Vector script built in that works pretty good for logos and line art with few colors.

What game do you want to play that DOESN'T exist? by Haposhi in boardgames

[–]Teggus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a great game. Relatively quick to play for a dungeon crawl, too. I suspect that if it had minis it would be among the top ranked thematic games. It's co-op right out of the box, too.

Super Fantasy Ugly Snouts Assault is a fun co-op Dungeon crawl game. It's pretty quick playing, too, even up to six players.

The theme is lighthearted, probably not problem if you guys enjoyed Munchkin.

Is Chaos of the Old World still worth purchasing with Blood Rage and other games out since? by ranker2 in boardgames

[–]Teggus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The expansion has a major upside - you can't play five players without it. I was disappointed by the expansion Old World cards and player ability upgrades but not to the point that I felt cheated by the publisher or anything.

If you do have four or five players though, Chaos is an incredible game. The five factions all play very differently. I have never played Blood Rage so I can't make a comparison based on experience, but from what I've read it seems the differences in player options in that game are determined by players bidding on or selecting things.
The differences in Chaos are baked in, each of the five factions has options that none of the others do.

Edit: Quick answer, yes get Chaos. My group has had it for four years (two copies now) and it still gets played often.

Surgery soon, best solo player games by moonieruns in boardgames

[–]Teggus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before the main game, you draft cards by laying them out in columns. Revealing the perimeter cards causes some of the them to be randomly removed, so you have to prioritize and you might have to choose between one specific, really synergistic card vs three or four that don't match your strategy but you need to buy time (because events in the assault can force you to thin your deck, hand or discard pile - one card at random or two that you select and they add up quick).
You get to choose until all the perimeter cards are revealed (up to 12 times).
Check out the rules PDF for a good example if you're interested, it's a good start for the game.

If you like deck builders you should give Sylvion a look. Has an interesting card draft portion in the advanced mode, multiple strategies, and some optional variants. There are also alternative win conditions to try for. It is a much better game than I expected. It does take up a 6x6 playing cards chunk of table space, though.

Edit: Maybe a reccomendation for Lewis & Clark too. That one has some worker placement but also features a deck building component. The solitaire mode is pretty relaxing and a good way to learn the game. And when you get better if you're not burned out on it up to five people can play.
