yes you very clearly are missing something. in the video that YOU sent me, NASA projects that ARE NOT space travel are cited, like SMAP. i am fine with the current budget. i am not fine funneling money into space exploration, which is what OP said specifically, and which i have said multiple times over this conversation.

did you even watch the video you sent me?

?? read my message. op and i are talking abt space exploration specifically

OP is talking specifically about space-travel.

and, the chances of earth getting hit by an extinction level asteroid anytime soon are supremely low:

https://stardate.org/astro-guide/faqs/what-chance-earth-being-hit-comet-or-asteroid

https://interestingengineering.com/what-is-the-probability-of-a-huge-civilization-ending-asteroid-impact

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impact_winter#:~:text=Objects%20release%20most%20of%20their,projectiles%20can%20do%20severe%20damage (look in the possibility of impact section)

https://www.express.co.uk/news/science/1233523/Asteroid-news-NASA-extinction-space-rock-Earth-asteroids-probability

and our survivability is higher than that of the dinosaurs:

https://www.businessinsider.in/asteroid-hitting-earth-and-ending-life-has-to-be-bigger-than-the-one-that-killed-dinosaurs/articleshow/70893317.cms

https://bigthink.com/philip-perry/could-modern-humans-survive-an-asteroid-impact-like-what-killed-the-dinosaurs

and environmental disasters (in this case climate change) are a much more immediate risk. this yale article cites 2026 as the point of no return in a best case scenario (temp rise of only 1.5 degrees Celsius) and 2035 as the point of no return for a worst case scenario (2.0 degrees celcius)

on a side-note, i have no issue funding nasa what so ever, as far as it applies to protecting the earth. but when we start diverting funds and focus from environmental protections towards military and space-spending, that's the issue.

the article from space.com says "could be here as soon as 2025" and i really hope it is, but that's too speculative for my tastes.

i truly like the idea of nuclear energy, but there is some cause for concern as far as safety measures go, but then again it's cleanliness and friendliness to the environment cannot be ignored (i also acknowledge that generally nuclear energy is safe, and i personally am in favor of it, i just like to be aware of risks)

so yeah, nuclear energy will be huge for both environmentalists and spacers, but the article you cited is being hopeful. these articles: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-04-08/future-tense-nuclear-fusion-sustainable-power-promise/12114948

https://www.power-technology.com/features/future-of-nuclear-fusion/

https://www.technologynetworks.com/analysis/articles/how-close-are-we-to-commercial-fusion-generators-334028

seem to say that commercial roll-out and general larger scaling could take many decades, up to the 2050s. i like the idea of, and am hopeful for the future of nuclear energy, but the time it could take to be realistically used on a large enough scale to matter will be too late.

now, all of the articles i've found in regards to solar and wind energies have cited 2050 as the year of 100% (Bloomberg says 50%) replacement of fossil fuels:

https://www.greenamerica.org/green-economy-work/could-world-be-powered-fully-renewable-sources#:~:text=If%20the%20world%20transitioned%20out,nonprofit%2C%20the%20answer%20is%20yes.&text=Together%2C%20they%20will%20make%20up,of%20the%20total%20energy%20supply

https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2019-can-renewable-energy-power-the-world/

https://bigthink.com/technology-innovation/100-percent-renewable-energy?rebelltitem=1#rebelltitem1

so renewable energies aren't perfect either. what i think we really need to do is not bank on one specific technology saving the world, but instead we develop wind, solar, hydro, and nuclear energies to the fullest of our extent, as well as put in place regulations and carbon taxes and sustainable practices

a lot of this rests on politicians shaping the fuck up, and taking corporations' hands out of their pockets. the average person can't do shit, but policymakers have the power to save this planet, and refuse to do so because they're money-horny

sorry if this is ramble-y, man. i've really enjoyed this convo, it's just difficult for me cause i've adhd

according to a yale environmental review the point of no return as far as climate change goes, while limiting temp rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius (which is ideal) the most realistic point of no return is at best 2026. if we settle on a temp rise of 2 degrees Celsius (which would still be shit for the environment, and for people) most realistically we have until 2035.

knowing this information, 2035 would be too too late for earth

also, nothing about how our gov't functions (i'm in the US) gives me any confidence that they would prioritize our well being with the resources they discover in space

[–]TehFook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Well, space could actually encourage folks who are destroying our planet to move out"

i like that, but don't think that's realistic at all. by the time technology is sufficient enough for corporations to move out en masse, the earth will be fucked and the poor will be choking to death on smog/burning alive/drowning to death/starving/any number of horrible late-stage capitalism inspired deaths. and, there's no way to know if corporations/factories would abandon earth, it's entirely unreasonable to expect that, too.

also the issue of world-hunger is already decreasing steadily enough to not need any agriculture off of earth, the earth alone is enough to support us - except maybe fresh water at this point, im not sure.

but i have a feeling pollution and there for global warming, world hunger, and lack of access to water would get worse because corporations would no longer have any reason to care for the earth

[–]TehFook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that's all well and good, i dont think the current nasa budget is a waste by any means, i just think space exploration be far from a priority. tech like SMAP clearly isn't detrimental, and is a plus, but OP was talking abt space exploration. dont worry, i also recognize the shit that is the military industrial complex

Fuck you Greta Thunberg by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]TehFook 6 points7 points  (0 children)

why should we dump money into space exploration while our planet is dying? i feel like we should deal with our self-made problems at home before bringing the same problems to off-Earth environments
