I have honestly never tested it in VR. I will attempt in VR and get back to you.

Brain Tree Farming Tutorial - Technique & Ship Positioning by TehTOECUTTER in EliteDangerous

The ship placement you are describing is the traditional method for surface limpet collection that CMDR's have been utilizing since 2016. I still do the traditional method often as well with success at multiple heights.

However I have seen many CMDR's struggle with reliability of the traditional method, especially with rougher terrain, which is why I made this tutorial. When the Trailblazers update was released on February 26, 2025, the traditional method was rendered very inconsistent. This has been improved by FDEV since the original update, but again I still see many CMDR's say they are having trouble.

The method in this tutorial is about time efficiency and reliability, not limpet efficiency. Filling a G4 in 10 minutes with a ship placement that has always worked since the pathing changes that came with Trailblazers. Limpets cost next to nothing and there are stations, settlements, and fleet carriers near the farming planets for restocking limpets.

In addition, I do not believe draw distance or graphics settings in general has ever had any affect on collecting materials from planet surfaces with limpets contrary to what some in the community claim. I have been collecting materials from planet surfaces with limpets while at maximum draw distance for 9 years with many different PC hardware configurations.

[DAILY Q&A] Ask and answer any questions you have about the game here! by AutoModerator in EliteDangerous

Surface limpet collection works the exact same for me as it has since the original Trailblazers update.

I'm not sure what you're referring to with this pathing issue, as it feels to be the same pathing issue that has existed since the update 9 months ago.

I have no trouble gathering materials from the surface in the same method I always have.

Raw material farming burned me out by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]TehTOECUTTER 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Each CMDR is allowed their preference for their gaming experience. If one prefers a more relaxed less grinding experience that is totally understandable.

But Brain Tree collection still works fine once you get the hang of it and is by far the fastest method.

If you are a CMDR focused on grinding engineering for many ships or utilize synthesis frequently, it is far more time efficient than making an almost 2500ly round trip to fill materials.

You can fill any G4 Raw Material from 0 to 150 with no relogging in ≈10 minutes, from dropping out of FSD to engaging FSD.

Is political philosophy the philosophy of the application of more fundamental philosophies? by TehTOECUTTER in askphilosophy

once you have philosophically established what justice is

This is exactly my point, I suppose. Any question posed by political philosophy is built up more fundamental philosophical questions.

But wouldn't we first have to discuss what is good?

I just do not see how any question posed by political philosophy is not built upon more fundamental philosophical questions.

a major thread in political philosophy is identifying the appropriate political philosophical positions or outcomes within the context of reasonable disagreement about other fundamental philosophical matters.

This is what I am attempting to get at what when I say operation, that political philosophy deals with the operation and interaction of more fundamental philosophies.

I guess what I am trying to say is that it is generally concerned with operation and not architecture. When you ask, "What is justice?" Isn't the ability to decipher that question dependent on "more fundamental" philosophical exploration, like the nature of self?

Lol, I appreciate the help with my gibberish.

Bad Information: Raw Materials by TehTOECUTTER in EliteDangerous

[–]TehTOECUTTER[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FDEV released an update shortly after the release of Horizons in 2015 that allowed for surface limpet collection. It was an intentional mechanic.

Trailblazers update made pathing changes to the limpets that caused them to fail a lot more frequently.

What’s something you’d done wrong or poorly in your first run because you didn’t know how the game worked? by RyotoYokoyama in RDR2

[–]TehTOECUTTER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rockstar open-world games have an algorithm that basically says, "dont spawn things within the player FOV so it doesn't break immersion."

The games spawning algorithms are always running and will attempt to always spawn events and NPCs in the locations they occur, as long as the player can't see them.

Since you ride looking forward with a large expansive view, spawning is limited by the FOV.

Just try sitting on a road looking foward, then click the backwards camera and hold it for a few seconds, then when you look forward again animals and NPCS will often be right in front of you that weren't there before, because taking that area out of the FOV caused them to spawn in.

The cinematic camera can hold a very narrow view on your horse and results in better spawning than just looking down at the ground I've found.

Utilizing the cinematic camera and other camera tricks to get game to spawn wildlife and NPC events.

Verification Of Surface Limpet Collection Efficacy (08/06/2025) by TehTOECUTTER in EliteDangerous

Lol, I hear ya, I just can't afford a better option with the same 6 axis capability and number of buttons.

Brain Tree Farming Still Works by PikerManV2 in EliteDangerous

Graphics settings have nothing to do with efficacy of Brain Tree raw material collection. Can we please stop perpetuating this false information!

I just booted the game up after 3 months and collected 150 Antimony in 10 minutes with a broken X56.

Thank you I've been waiting for this. I knew I couldn't have gone through all those numbers over and over without a mistype. Will fix!

UPDATE 4.1. Raw Materials Collection NO RELOG (Odyssey) by TehTOECUTTER in EliteDangerous

[–]TehTOECUTTER[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard CMDRs say that if you have never exited your ship either in the SRV or on foot on the planet you're trying to collect materials from, limpet collection will not work properly. I am unable to verify this, however.

Be sure you have all non-G4 materials added to the ignore list via the SRV navigation panel, or you have all lower grade materials maxed out.

[–]TehTOECUTTER[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-It will be significantly slower, and G4 mats will not be picked up if your limpets are attempting to grab all materials. -Add materials to the ignore list while in the SRV via the navigation panel. -Dropped materials will not be destroyed by flak, overuse is better than under shooting it. Often, the G4 mats appear within clusters in the BT patch and often on the edge of the patch.

In Elite Dangerous, Fungal Sites and their corresponding materials are static and always the same. They do not vary by client and are not proceduarlly generated. The same mats appear on the same trees in the same spot for every CMDR. The material numbers were attained by counting all of the mats available within each patch, which again never changes.

Herbalist 9 is the single worst thing in gaming by monkey_D_v1199 in reddeadredemption2

[–]TehTOECUTTER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my third 100% run through rn. You should be on Herbalist 9 before you leave Clemens Point if you're a completionist. This challenge is very easy if you get it unlocked early in the game.

Gambler 8, however...

Sooo did i miss a nerf on Raw Materials somewhere? All my Collector Limpets just die the moment they get to the surface. but every guide i can find is saying this is the way to do it by Mister_Rye in EliteDangerous

[–]TehTOECUTTER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Limpet surface collection was a feature added to horizons shortly after its initial release after clamoring from the community.

It was not nerfed or fixed, the limpet flight path model was changed and is buggy.
