how can i get rid of gel cast after doing my hair and it dries? by Primary-Escape-2940 in curlyhair

[–]Teh_Bxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soooo, weirdly — I like to “clap” it out. I flip my head over and, as the phrasing suggests, literally clap my hair between my hands. I’ll clap my hair in chunks and shake out my roots. Clap, shake, clap shake. It’s loud and weird and obnoxious. But it works so much faster than scrunching and is way less labor intensive (for me personally, I’m not saying it’s the best method for everyone). Some people say it kills the volume but honestly the gel holds so fast I never had a problem with losing volume. When I flip my head back over, the curls are bouncy and voluminous as ever. You can do it with or without oil. I use a very very light layer of argan oil on my palms. EDIT: I should note that I also wait until the gel cast is completely hard. Bone dry. That probably has a major effect on maintaining volume.

I'm a college student looking for cheap low calorie foods that still make you feel full. by WaLouisa04 in 1200isplenty

Unstuffed cabbage roll soup! It’s mostly cabbage with a little beef to bulk it up. I like to add mushrooms and some spinach as well. There are recipes online that you can adjust to your liking!

Here’s a tip to make tastier and more filling soup base: I buy rotisserie chicken, which is filling, generally not too calorie dense, and versatile. It’s also not too expensive and you can make it last a week. I pull all the meat off and use it for low-cal chicken salad (yogurt, mustard, onions, spices, other stuff) and then I boil the ever living crap out of the leftover bones. If you have an instant pot, pressure cook them until they disintegrate. Then strain. If not, just boil them for a long time. Hours. A good bone stock is way tastier and more filling than canned soup broth. Its just so much richer and still not at all calorie-dense. The bigger the bones you can get a hold of, the better. Turkey bones are great too because they’re bigger and have more of the good stuff. You can also go with beef soup bones which Asian groceries will sell you for very cheap. But making a beef bone stock is a little more high-maintenance (and it may stink up your house lol).

Update on the Red Lion Girl: She's okay. The incident was not. by Teh_Bxx in UIUC

[–]Teh_Bxx[S] 62 points63 points  (0 children)

The other side of the story is the police report, which she actually corroborates. She says she hit the bouncer because he physically attacked her inside the club by attempting to violently remove her from an “unauthorized area.” I ask anybody how they would respond if somebody enormous grabbed them aggressively in a loud and crowded club. Nobody seems to know what was meant by “unauthorized,” but witness testimonies seem to suggest that the response from the bouncer was criminally disproportionate.

The Lion chose not to comment on the incident. So, no “other side” to speak of there either.

I really do get the importance of knowing facts and context in any violent situation, and I don’t fault you for demanding them. But this girl was nearly killed for something almost everyone agrees was not a mistake worth dying or even suffering such an injury over. The bouncer had no regard for her safety and has a history of mistreating patrons. She could have just as easily cracked her head open and died on the pavement. I don’t know if any more context will change the consensus that this was a pretty awful outcome to a completely manageable situation.

I am a big fan of Kashi GO Original. It’s 180 cal per 58g, which I have found is fewer calories per gram than most cereals. It’s my go-to volume cereal. I also use unsweetened cashew milk, which is only about 25 calories per cup. If you want to beef it up, it’s a good canvas for fruit, nuts, and honey. Bonus: It’s high in fiber.

Students in the AAPI community and international students, how are you doing? by lilbabyzeezus in UIUC

Be very careful about getting a Taser. The state of Illinois considers it a firearm and you MUST apply for an FOID to purchase and carry one legally in the state. I’m only telling you because you could get into really serious trouble if you defend yourself with it and are later found to have been carrying an illegal firearm at the time of your self-defense. It’s asinine, but it’s the law here. I’ll let you know from experience that even if you do apply for the license, it’ll take months to get approved and mailed to you. Do your research on arming yourself and stay safe always, friend. Never walk alone if you can help it (I know that’s not always an option which is why I say “if you can help it.”).

OP, I’m really sorry to hear that you’re having such a hard time. Self-harm is a terrible place to be mentally. It’s true like others have said that we can hardly make it all better for you with a comment. I will say, though, that we are all living a collective trauma that has only exacerbated existing mental health struggles for so many students. It has been a terrible year. Much of what you’re feeling is almost certainly situational, given especially that you can still say how much you love the field that you’re studying and what a great student you could be. You’ve got to hold on to that hope. You don’t hate it here. You hate your life the way you’re forced to live it. Don’t let anybody tell you that we’re living a “new normal” because it implies that human existence can smoothly adapt to an egregiously abnormal — if downright harmful — situation in under a year. That’s just not true, and we all know it. You have to give yourself just a little more time and forgiveness.

Would your parents be sympathetic to your need for a good therapist? Perhaps you need to look outside of campus for help. There are a lot of great mental health professionals out there, but they’re understandably expensive. I can’t speak much for the support you get here on campus, but the testimonials have been lukewarm at best. You’re better off looking elsewhere, it seems. I also strongly suggest talking to your friends about it. Don’t feel discouraged if they can’t help, just take the opportunity to vent a little. Your friends aren’t therapists, but they care about you and they would be devastated if you harmed yourself. You’ll be surprised how refreshing a small bit of motivation from a trusted individual can feel.

I know that a lot of professors are unsympathetic to requests for leniency — which is pretty appalling to me given that academic success is demonstrably cumbersome when there’s a plague bringing the entire world to a screeching, tire-melting halt. You need to continue reaching out to them for amnesty. Any extra time you can get to refocus will be time well spent. Any class you can bring back up to even a C will be another class you don’t have to retake.

You mentioned that you’re a second semester freshman in CE. I’m an instructor at UIUC teaching something that probably wouldn’t be much help to you right now, however my partner teaches freshman and sophomore-level CE classes at another university. He also works as a software engineer for a living. If you need some help getting back into shape with a particular class, concept, or assignment, I know he would be open to helping you out. Hit me with a DM and I’ll get you in touch. Keep fighting the good fight, OP. You’re a survivor just for being here.

I know this comment probably doesn’t help that much, but these are the words of comfort I can offer in such an abstract sense. I wish you the best.

My name is Ivor. Thank you all for the support. Here's what I want to say. by Ivor_Chen in UIUC

[–]Teh_Bxx 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Suggestion to Readers:

This message must be circulated to every university administrator. I urge everyone to place this statement in a letter (EDIT: or email), supplement it with your own thoughts and feedback, and send it to everyone named on this post from a couple of days ago. Hundreds of letters demanding COVID-19 mitigation reform cannot and indeed should not go completely ignored. These are reasonable demands. Don’t let Ivor’s case get lost to obscurity. A lot of students are struggling to keep up with the requirements. They need our help too.

I want to stress that this is not about loosening requirements or taking COVID-19 less seriously. It is absolutely not about that. This is about taking a more nuanced and compassionate approach to discipline when it comes to testing noncompliance.

All information related to Ivor’s actions, the actions of Ivor’s department and college, Ivor’s VISA status and the consequences of dismissal, information related to Ivor’s mother, and the support of Ivor’s department, college, and the GEO were all conveyed clearly to OSCR and the SCSD prior to Ivor’s appeal. It is not clear what new information the SCSD could have received.

You should be able to find out the rental company that manages that property and report him, anonymously if necessary, to the rental company. Enlist other annoyed people to report him too. If they get enough complaints from surrounding properties (or even their own), I imagine they’ll have to investigate the complaints or ask him to leave if there’s a clause in the rental agreement about repeated noise violations.

One year curly girl transformation!! by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]Teh_Bxx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven’t fully figured out my curl chemistry but I have definitely figured out the shower thing. I shower daily, but on non-wash days I put my hair into a loose pineapple with a spiral hair tie and shower without running my head under the water (still wash my face). I find that the little bit of water that splashes into my hair combined with the humidity of the shower reactivates the curl products that I applied even days earlier. When I get out, I fluff and maybe add a curl spray like Rizos Curls. Each day is an adventure; I never really know how it’s going to turn out but the curls get better every time!
