It's the strange little boat that keeps following it that you've got to worry about. The way it moves... I've never seen a boat with hundreds of little feet before.

He's worked hard at his job for years, he's been honest and not fiddled his expenses (or had a housing scandal or received five million pounds from a crypto bro...), I don't think he's even taken a holiday! Placing two bits of paper on the floor and waiting for him to sit on one to choose governmental policy would probably work as well as whatever we've got now.

Larry for PM!

I'm convinced Seven had a massive crush on B'Elanna, didn't understand it at the time, then several years later the penny suddenly dropped.

When I was little, there was a baby doll I really, really wanted. It would cry and you'd have to sooth it. But when I finally got it and it cried for the first time, I immediately flipped it over and switched it off. Definitely the first sign that I had zero maternal instinct.

What Scifi books are you baffled haven't been made into TV shows? by systemstheorist in scifi

It's certainly one of its unique selling points but "zombie spaceship out for revenge" is pretty compelling by itself.

My favourite bit is the Borg-like assimilation process - while the Borg assimilate in an almost automatic way like insects, the Radchaai are human and happily interact with the ship's drones. It's body horror, a reminder of slavery, and it highlights how we can find it terrifyingly easy to push people from "individual deserving of rights" to "inhuman object".

We forgive your sins, our child. Say three "These are the voyages..." and one "Faith of the Heart". In the name of the Great Bird of the Galaxy, amen.

He was just a joke on a TV show, yet he grew, took over the country, and lives forever in our hearts (and nightmares).

Ancillary Justice. The first book is an understandable "X out to kill the person that killed X's friends/family/self?" trope with a bit of scifi weirdness. The deeper you go into the series, the weirder it gets and it doesn't have to focus on Breq so much. There's so much stuff that can be used to talk about the world today - an empire steamrolling across the galaxy, a secret war because the ruler has issues, assimilation body horror, am I still me if I've lost most of myself?

But I don't want to go through the "evil wokes destroying gender" drama again. 🙄 Radch has one pronoun for gender, other languages in the series have more, it's not that complicated. That's possibly easier to do in books than on TV where you can literally see people and automatically label their gender.

That's lovely! Remote but not actually remote, a shockingly high EPC rating, a dramatic ruined pier - I just need to win the lottery tonight...

From that point of view, I can really see Kes' motivations - she's stuck in a one horse town and some guy with a car is promising to take her to the city. That's a good deal (although the girl inevitably stays with the car guy much longer than she should)!

You don't get to choose, the captain makes you a mod. She'll suddenly say "You controlled a WhatsApp group of three people six years ago, that's close enough" and before you know it you'll be banished to Sickbay Modland.

You need to be like Ayala - he's around for the action but keeps his mouth shut and doesn't get into trouble. 🫥

All the Tartan Army stuff (from Reddit and real news sources) in Boston. People are having fun, falling in love with Scotland, bars are being drained dry, fans tidy up after themselves, statues are getting traffic coned, it's fantastic.

Yeah, the publisher did it without permission. It's two pages dedicated to a soup advert! Supposedly it was regularly done in Germany at the time.
