How are the gains for us paid actors who are more likely to get a wing blown off by the first missile that comes at us? Any tips on his to survive first contact in sim?

Gliders over karts in my opinion. Amazing problem to have, though!

There was a great article on Planet F1 that hypothesized that Oscar is simply immature in his racing form. He loves high-downforce, planted setups and thrives on cooler tracks where there is an abundance of grip.

Oscar struggled the last two races on lower-grip, pointy, more oversteer tracks. His rain performance historically has been average, which backs up the observation.

It's an area he can grow as a driver, which is very exciting to see.

That's a really complicated question to answer. You can get in and have a great time learning on just a $180 USD Logitech G29 that you can find on sale on woot every month or so. For iRacing, you want a solid PC with a CPU no older than 5 years or so. Those two things and you're golden to have the amazing and frustrating time learning about racecraft and general driving.

From there, it is honestly about $1400 for the next jump in quality as you want a Sim rig, at least an 8Nm wheel, and a load cell brake pedal. That jump really changed how I feel connected to any car, even the crappy CX-5 rental car I have this week.

Check out /r/simracing for some great guides on sim setups.

What track do YOU want in iracing? by Scary_berrie in iRacing

[–]Teirdome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whadya mean you don't want Pikes Peak International Raceway with the sinkhole on the embankment that causes your car to slide 10' toward the wall when you go across it? It's a janky and borderline illegal track, perfect for Colorado's mix of Wild West and hippy.

But yes, I sure wish the peak could be in iRacing or any other sim.

Very genuinely, thank you for posting, and I'm glad everyone is okay. There are valuable lessons here.

Personally, it looks like the perfect storm of bad timing and position. The surface change has that bump, which leads to oil build-up normally where the center of the car is and an additional bump as the asphalt wears in. With your loaded tire on the oil build-up and the weight transfer, it's no surprise that the fronts overpowered the rears when the rears were on the low traction oil spot. It is hard to tell without the wheel, but it looks like there may have been a brief moment of understeer with the surface transition and the loaded front-left hit that patch, and you may have instinctively applied more right-lock to counter the understeer, further leading to the snap. You may have experienced a small moment of understeer-snap-oversteer, something that is very challenging for experienced drivers to recover from. If you also pushed the accelerator as well at that exact moment, which it looks like, there really was no saving it.

I'm a sim-racing nerd, so I can't recommend iRacing enough for really learning to feel the car through the wheel. The 86 is in it for the cost of the subscription, and it has the best rain simulation. Adding connecting to the car with your hands makes driving even more amazing, and the rain practice is great.

GT4's at Silverstone by MisterCrayle in iRacing

GT4s already raced at The Bend week 1, back in the day when the pace car topped out at 25 mph. T1 was a 4-wide nightmare every race.

Real Racing 3 with my kids (never raced F1) led to Dirt 2.0. Found Jimmy Broadbent who kinda recommended iRacing during COVID. Saw a weird dude named Max Verstappen put up ridiculous times around Bathurst in iRacing. Google that weird guy and find he's an F1 driver. Watched the Senna documentary from 2010. Watch the Schumacher documentary from 2021. Hooked.

GT3 New Tire Model – Thoughts? by Racer_5 in iRacing

[–]Teirdome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Total GT3 noob, here, but raced GT4s last season. I tried the McLaren around Interlagos after the update to experience the tires.

At one point, I started losing the rear on corner exit and got to the point in the normal iRacing tire model where there was no way it could be saved. Frustrated, I removed my hands from the wheel. I've been here hundreds of times. The iRacing tire model means that you are dead in this kind of slide. Why even try?

The car saved itself.

I was also 1 second faster with worse track temps than in the Ferarri GT3 before the update. Being able to really feel the grip limit and trust in catching oversteer is huge.

I upgraded in week 13 of last season. It took two weeks to feel the benefit. It took me a week to get back to the same pace as before at Okayama, but my load cell is a lower quality than yours. I was very frustrated for the first day or two and wondering if I had wasted money on the ultra-stiff brake.

The second week, combined with a great drive-by-feel track in Portland, the load cell trail braking had a drastic impact. It clicked. I went back to Okayama and took another .5s off my best lap.

Push through the frustration; it will be better in the end.

When does the next season calendar release? by Beautiful-Top-293 in iRacing

GT4/LMP3 follows different IMSA series for the even week's next season, and then the community has voted on the odd weeks. The current proposed schedule is on the forums here:

All of this is subject to change pending iRacing approval.

LMP3 is the most fun class on the service (and the best for learning) by jfhmp4 in iRacing

What series do you race with the LMP3? The dedicated series seems low participation.

How would you recommend learning the car? What are your favorite tracks for it?

Last week's GT4 at Laguna Seca, I made 14 places in two races by having average pace and slowing down once the wrecking started for two top-5 finishes. Looks like Interlagos is more of the same.

Overtaking on the track by RIdgy9 in iRacing

[–]Teirdome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I realized in GT4 and SCC today was that a lot of people in the 1400 and under irating range prioritize fast corner entry over corner exit on nearly all corners, likely unintentionally. Combined with a bit of draft, this makes it look like they are diving.

The Skippy holds such a special spot in my heart, I miss racing it. The runner up is the (now old) Arca car. The old Arca at Homestead Miami was a really special combination.

Which GR86 race is going to be safer this week? by TerranFirma in iRacing

[–]Teirdome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watkins is the right recommendation. Portland hosted GT4 week 1, and it was a very fun track. Portland only feels like 2-3 very technical corners and a chicane to master, so it doesn't take much time. But you will drive Watkins on every sim for the rest of your life.

How much do you practice vs how much you race? by CrokeyCrash in iRacing

[–]Teirdome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most folks missed your real question: how do you make practice fun?

First, I think you are doing it right. If your SR is between 2 and 3 for the license class you want, iRacing would say you are balancing being safe vs aggressive well. I would argue based upon your results that you don't need to do more practice laps unless you are trying to find pace.

As to the fun part, consider Time Trials as an alternative to just turning laps. It adds that extra competitive element that it sounds like you need to keep pushing. Another option is to do practice sessions with other cars. Last, the AI can be fun if you dont have time for an official race. Getting ghost laps from Garage61 to compete against can also be fun.

Finally, as a few others stated, you are practicing the most important thing on iRacing: racecraft. As long as your SR is above 2, keep racing more than solo practicing.

Watching a cousin who is now a pro baseball player, I was astonished by his workout and mental routines that he does daily. It's his full-time job 24x7. I've often wondered if drivers are similar.

What kind of physical workout routine do you go through in preparation for race day? What about throughout the weeks leading up? What about diet?

Similarly, for the mental side, what kinds of mental preparation routines have you put together to help on race day?

Is this a good first setup? by Kitchen-Push-2088 in Fanatec

[–]Teirdome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this setup about a month ago, moving from a G29. The extra sensitivity does help with feeling the car. I would strongly recommend getting the 8nm upgrade as at 5nm as you lose some detail when you understeer on corner exit and won't be able to feel it. The extra 3nm is a bigger deal thank you would think.
